Dutch: An Essential Grammar shows, step by step, how the language is constructed. It presents a lively and accessible description of the language using plenty of relevant examples. Particular attention is paid to areas of difficulty for English speakers. With a range of suporting exercises and lavish use of illustration, this is the ideal first grammar for the Dutch learner.
It's more like a textbook than an actual grammar. But that's good as I was looking for a book to teach myself Dutch anyway. It's weird making a detour over English here, although German is so close. That's makes it easy to remember the rules. Everything's well explained and there are many examples and useful sentences for practise. However, the illustrations inside are quite useless — it's easier to understand the stuff when reading. The illustrations (not the photos) are quite confusing. I'm through it now and feel like knowing the entire grammar now.
A solid guide for the large majority of Dutch grammar. I'm not sure how plausible it is to learn a language solely from a book, but this is at least a valuable tool in the process. The edition I had was out of date (it referred to guilders), but still a solid reference/learning tool. I would especially recommend it for use as a complementary tool to online options like Duolingo, Babbel, or Pronounciator, as the book offers more explanations to augment those more conversational/learn-by-doing offerings.
so far the best grammar book for beginners. Easy to understand and pretty comprehensive coverage. still, took me more 2 years to read through...(reading on and off) Geez, learning a language is demanding
