Some might say this book is too short with not enough detail, but for my purposes, it was a solid introduction to the history of the Catholic Church. The engaging style promotes further reading on a variety of topics. Recommended for any looking to know more about the Catholic faith. But definitely don't stop here.

This reads like a middle school book report in some rural Catholic school where most the parents voted for Trump. I should've suspected this considering the author is a professor at Steubenville, where understanding reality is second to pushing a 'traditionalist' agenda.

As Dr. Schreck states in the Preface, this book is a compilation of "a series of simple lessons on the history of the Catholic Church" for a group setting. Thus it "provides a non-technical introductory overview of the Catholic Church and its history." In this it delivers. For the uninitiated, it provides a very quick overview that can be comfortably read in an afternoon. For those with a genuine interest, they will not want to stop here; rather it will whet the appetite for more.

The first 100 pages cover the time up to the 20th century, the last 53 from the turn of the 20th century to 1986 when the book was written. The last chapter is particularly good because it allows for some reflections ("perspective," he puts it) by the author. There is a 15 page "Teaching Summaries" at the end that is helpful for a quick review any time it is needed.

As an introduction to the history of the Catholic Church this is a fine book. If you are past that stage, look to more in-depth treatments.

You may think it's impossible to write a decent history of the Catholic Church in 181 pages. You'd be right. Alan Schreck attempted to do it, and largely failed. The only reason this gets a second star is that unlike most other books on Church history, he actually spends a decent amount of time in the 18-20th centuries showing how the French Revolution and the Enlightenment gave us the Western world we have to do.

Great resource for quickly getting a grasp of the history of the Church. Every body should read it. I hope it is brought back in print. Catch a used one if you can.

"Lịch Sử Giáo Hội Công Giáo" của Alan Schreck là một bản tóm lược súc tích và dễ đọc về hành trình hơn 2000 năm của Giáo Hội. Với văn phong giản dị, tác giả giúp người đọc nắm được những bước ngoặt quan trọng: từ thời các Tông đồ, các Công đồng đầu tiên, đến Trung Cổ, Cải Cách Tin Lành và thời hiện đại. Schreck không đi sâu vào chi tiết học thuật mà tập trung vào bức tranh lớn - nhấn mạnh sự phát triển giáo lý, vai trò của các nhân vật then chốt và quá trình mở rộng của Giáo Hội qua từng thời kỳ.

Tuy vậy, cách trình bày của Schreck đôi lúc hơi nhẹ tay với các giai đoạn nhạy cảm như Thập tự chinh hay vụ Galileo, và góc nhìn nhìn chung vẫn ưu ái Giáo Hội. Ông cho rằng "sự kết án của đức giáo hoàng đối với các khám phá của Galileo không cản trở sự tiến bộ của khoa thiên văn cận đại", nhưng thực tế nó vẫn cản trở phần nào và là một dấu ấn xấu không thể xóa bỏ trong lịch sử Giáo hội.

Dù vậy, cuốn sách vẫn giữ được sự trung dung cơ bản và không che giấu những sai sót của con người trong lịch sử tôn giáo.

Good intro book, but really only good for someone that is wholly uniformed of Latin Rite Catholic history and is looking for a history that is subjective. It’s certainly not polemical by any means, just really targeted at cradle Catholics from the West that are not “academics” who want to learn more about their own history in a very general (and a bit pastoral) way. If that’s you, then a great read. If not, don’t bother.

Book was good. Covered 2000 years in a quick read.

The Audible version was HORRIBLE. There were so many mispronunciations that it was tough to listen too.
