Some tidbits about me...

I turned down a scholarship to Miskatonic University because I heard of the high rate of incidents against the student population.

I briefly worked for Omni Consumer Products in their Marketing Department. Great benefits, nice cafeteria, sadly too prone to executive whim.

Last year I stayed at the noted Mauna Pele resort in Hawaii. The accommodations were impressive but my traveling companion disappeared soon after wanting to attend a pig roast.

I've slept with one minor porn star and with a guy who later became one.

And I happen to have written some fanfic that inspired the memorable holodeck scene in Star Trek: Hidden Frontiers episode "Vigil"

This is really a short story, 14 pages, but it's really unexpected since I was not used to this type of story by Steve Berman. It's an historical romp, strangely setting in an unknown Caribbean island, and it has love and sex.

Radford is a young English man who was shanghaied to become an unwilling pirate. During an attack, Radford manages to gain vengeance toward the man who forced him, a fellow crewman, but he is also injured. Marooned in an island with a strange frenchman known as Inkman, since he creates wonderful tattoo for the pirates dock on the island, Radford will heal not only his physical injury, but also his mind, also thank to the help of an handsome spanish pirate.

The story it's all about Radford and his journey out of the darkness he fell in. It has also the great merit to be unexpected in only 14 pages, since I started reading it obviously waiting for Radford to bond with Inkman, and why I wouldn't? it was almost impossible that in a so short story there were more than two main characters. And instead Radford bonds with Inkman, but not in the way I think: Inkman helps Radford to heal physically, but the whole mental healing will arrive also thanks to Salort, the pirate who will show to Radford that not all the pirates are to despise.

Very nice short story, with enough little details to allow the reader to plunge in the story, always an hard thing to do with an historical setting and few pages time.

Secretive Steve! I had no idea that he’d written a gay historical, and only found it because Elisa Rolle showcased it on her blog. It was a very pleasant surprise as I like Steve’s writing a lot.

This didn’t disappoint. It’s a little jewel of a story–no set time mentioned, but there are pirates so we can assume 17th century or thereabouts, but really it doesn’t matter. It’s the story of Radford, who was kidnapped in Cornwall by a drinking companion and pressed aboard ship. His ship gets into a fight with the Dutch and he’s wounded. The Captain doesn’t want to take him any further–convinced he’ll die–so he leaves him on an island with “Inkman” an enigmatic tattoo artist.

It’s hard to do a review on such a short story without spoiling, so this will be a short review! In such a little tale, Berman manages to write several believable characters, some intriguing backstory, and a deeply erotic, but not graphic sexual encounter. Oh and an ending that leaves you panting for more. My favourite character is the Inkman, and I for one had itchy fingers at the end of it it wanting to write fanfic about him. Bravo and Yo ho ho!

This was a short story, or a very short story to be exact. Only 9 pages. Still it was very good for the format. Writing a short story well must be the hardest thing to do, but Steve Berman manages to give me all the information I need to enjoy the story. And by the end I really want it to continue!

Radford is being dumped by the Pirate Captain on Inkman´s island to heal after being knifed. Radford doesn´t mind staying with old Inkman as he did not enjoy the time on his last ship. A lot of pirates stop by on Inkman´s island on their way out to the high seas. On one of those ships is the beautiful Salort. Can Salort convince Radford that joining his pirate band will be better than staying on the island?
