He was born in Valetta, Malta, but as a child moved first to Leicester and then to Bolton. After gaining a degree in biology from the University of York, he returned to Leicester and got a job at the University of Leicester in their Pre-Clinical Sciences department. Originally his writing was confined to songs and he didn't turn to fiction until he was 32. His first piece of work was a 250,000 word story about polar bears for his wife, Jay, to accompany a stuffed polar bear he had bought her as a Christmas present. He didn't write another story for seven years, until he heard about a competition to write a story for young children with a prize of £2,000. The resulting book, A Hole at the Pole, also about polar bears, didn't win - but he sent it off to a publisher, who accepted it. His first children's novel, Fly, Cherokee, Fly, was published in 1998 and subsequently shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. It was inspired by the time he found an injured pigeon in Victoria Park and nursed it back to health at home. It became a family pet and lived for 14 years in a birdbox attached to the back of the house. All of its offspring were given the names of different Native American tribes, which is where the title of the book comes from.) He has since written over twenty children's books, including Pawnee Warrior (a sequel to Fly, Cherokee, Fly), a collaborative novel with fellow children's author Linda Newbery (From E To You), and the best-selling, award-winning The Last Dragon Chronicles. His books often contain environmental themes, and events based on things that have happened to him. In July 2002 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Leicester for his contributions to children's literature. Although writing is now his main source of income, he still works at the university as the operator of the confocal microscope. His favourite children's books are the Paddington Bear series and The Hobbit, and his favourite children's authors are Allan Ahlberg and Roald Dahl. Chris D'Lacey has written many books like Ice Fire and Fire Star, but his most famous book was Dark Fire, the fifth book in The Last Dragon Chronicles.
I've finished the first few books, i really have no words, it is my favorite books series so far! I hope some other people will get to read it and share it's wonders to even more people. :)
This series got my through the tortures of Grade 8, which was almost nearly a decade ago. Almost wanna go back and re read them, but at the same time don’t wanna disappoint myself
Omg I completely forgot about this series until I stumbled upon the 2nd book today in a used book store. I remember enjoying the first 3 as a kid, but I think the 4th one lost me. Can't remember anything about the plot though lol
The entire series was great! I read it a while ago, so I don't remember much, but I really liked the concept. I also really like fantasy, so there's that.
I first read this books when I was in third grade, and then that was it, but last year I re-read them because they were getting dusty on my book shelf. although the first book bored me to tears, the rest had an amazing plot, and I quickly became obsessed with the series again. this series is for people who love a good mystery/fantasy and DRAGONS :D!! however, it can be very confusing, because sometimes the story jumps around a whole lot and leaves you confused. if you read these books, don't stop till the end, you wont regret reading them! at the end or the fourth book, the fire eternal, it ends in sort of a cliff hanger leading to what I guess you could consider a new series, something pleasantly surprising I didn't remember reading the first time I read it! overall, a great book series, your imagination wont be disappointed!!
"The Fire Within" is a bit of a weak start in my opinion, but the plot thickens and the story becomes more and more fascinating with every word from "Icefire" onwards. My favorite thing about this series is the main character- David Rain. He is no hero, but at the same time he ends up doing things that are, indeed, heroic and self-sacrificing. He does have defined and stressed faults, however. He cheats on his girlfriend, he has a child at age 20, he breaks household rules on more than one account, but there is something about him that is extremely endearing and tragic.
I can't wait for the next editions to the series to be released.
the fire within: where is the magic, dragons how can they end up moving, a young man comes to live in a small town college and worked with a small family buisness and find the solution to a little girls mystery Ice Fire:a great continuous of the story adding polar bears
Fire star:great continuous of the story
the eternal fire: continuing the story, with a lot of emphasis on environmental responsibility, but allows the story to return to the true love story in the center of the whole thing
This Book Is Really confusing if you don't read the first books before this... I tried reading the 4th book before reading the first (The Eternal Fire is the 4th book) and so far I am all over the place... Right Now In the book fairies are running around Zanna, Liz, and Lucy's Garden... obviously Fantasy I mean fairies really...?

I enjoyed this book. Chris d'Lacey really knows how to write a book with many twists at the end. Each book had some twist in them that made them want to throw the book down but at the same time continue to read it.
I think that these books are of a major good read i totally reccomend them this book is about a young boy and girl of whom have powers and dragon like craturs really cool right!!!!!
these books were a very creative way to bring a dragon into the real world. the only part i didn't understand was how polar bears fit into the story. i draw dragons of my own.
