Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project #2

Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project, Vol. 2

Rate this book
Even as Gendo plots to submit his entire staff to aerobics training, the sinister SEELE has sent Kaworu Nagisa to sabotage Gendo and Yui's more private objectives... which means he's soon enrolling in Shinji's class! Such a pretty boy starts turning heads inside homeroom 2-A, even Shinji's - which causes Rei and Asuka to agree to join forces, on the grounds that Kaworu's presence could cause trouble for NERV. The irony is that, even if that's just their excuse, they're right!

A step backward from the first volume. The introduction of Kaworu brings with it some ugly homophobia, and Kaworu himself comes across as super-predatory. Shinji wavers between Asuka and Rei, and it's pretty clear that the material going forward is going to perpetuate this state of affairs as long as possible. That said, there are some scenes that are worth the read, especially when the perverted silliness gives way to genuine emotions.

Love squares anyone?

I'll be honest Kaworu Nagisa has never been a favorite character from the original series so I was not thrilled to see he was going to be introduced as a obstruction to whatever project is in the works under his mother and father's supervision. The first half of the book shows us how Asuka and Rei can work together when thy need to protect Shinji (I personally wouldn't care if Shinji swung both ways but I can see he clearly likes girls at least), some insight on the organization trying to monkey wrench the scientific research going on while everyone is doing the school thing, Asuka and Shinji moving in with Misato, and the power of positive thinking.

However regardless of how aggressive Kaworu is when he tries to get close to Shinji the second half of the book is pleasantly devoid of him as they return to the normal school type antics with Shinji, Toji, Kensuke, Rei, Asuka, and Hikari (although Misato tried to squeeze him into the group and he mysteriously vanished) as they take a school trip to Okinawa. Plenty of chances at romance and fun as the kids go wild in Okinawa. :)

I enjoyed the second half much better than the first. This volume doesn't have much going on in the lab and is pretty much school stuff with the kids. What I didn't like was that Nagisa was introduced as a gay character and all the gay jokes and having him vie for Ikari is very annoying. I do not enjoy BL at all and it ruins the Ikari/Rei/Asuka triangle. But things got better as Ikari and Rei got closer and got to spend some time alone when they all went on a class trip to Okinawa. I hope the next volume has a bit of lab stuff and less Nagisa teasing and antics.

This continues the teen comedy/slice-of-life setup in the first volume and doubles down on building Shinji and Rei’s relationship with a school trip to Okinawa. There’s a fun bit at NERV when all the power cuts out and they all have to use exercise bikes to manually charge the backup power. Still no Evangelion-on-Angel action yet and as a result this is mainly character-focused stuff set at school. The character interactions are the majority of what you’re getting here and they’re sweet enough to keep you engaged.

Voy a ir cambiando a la nueva a medida que vayan saliendo estos tomos de la nueva edición con sobrecubiertas.

Dejo la reseña de la edición vieja sólo por contexto:

Kaworu begins school in this book, so now there's shipteasing for Kaworu / Shinji along with the Asuka / Shinji and Shinji / Rei. :D There's fanservice, and the end of the book will please the Rei fans; that's all I'm gonna say.

I do so love Evangelion. Ahhh.

Más pedorro que el tomo 1 pero no tanto como el 3. Este es el tipo de productos que me hacen dudar de los que se dicen fans...
