Meet Zigby—an over-zealous zebra who keeps trotting into trouble! Young readers will adore these zippy, zany, animal-packed adventures—all set in the Great Outdoors. Zigby and his friends, McMeer and Bertie, can't believe their luck when they find a hidden lagoon. But who knows what lurks beneath the water?
This is a lovely picture book bursting with vibrant colours. The story revolves around three friends, Zigby the Zebra, Bertie Bird, and McMeer the Meerkat. After Bertie complaining about being a 'human' basket in a game of basketball, the friends decide to go fishing. Equipped with a net, the animals walk around looking for some water. Eventually they find themselves at a hidden lagoon.
Once there, Zigby goes swimming, Bertie decides to build a sandcastle, and McMeer sleeps on the hammock, leaving his fishing net beside him. When McMeer wakes up and notices his fishing net is missing, Zigby offers to look for it in the water. Underneath the water, Zigby faces an octopus and manages to get the net back. Zigby is very smart, and manages to camouflage himself within a school of black-and-white striped fish.
On dry land, all three friends run back to their home as fast as they can. In their panic however, McMeer's net gets snapped and ripped. Zigby then uses his mind again and comes up with a fantastic idea that even Bertie will agree with!
The story is very engaging, and the ending is not that predictable. The book allows children to think about friendship, and even colours and patterns. The illustrations are beautiful, meaning it is suitable for very young children. With so much packed into one book, Zigby Dives In can be used in classroom lessons such as PSHE, Art, and even Literacy.
A bright, boldly illustrated tale of a zebra, a meerkat and some kind of guinea fowl bird who go on an adventure. This far-fetched tale involves an octopus chase and a great ending resulting in triumph over the tragedy of the trio's broken fishing net. Appealed as bed time story for 4 and 7 year old child. It was good enough to make me consider getting purchasing another book with same characters.
Zigby Zebra spends the day hanging out with friends Bertie Bird and McMeer the Meerkat. McMeer loses his fishing net in the lake, Zigby dives in to retrieve it, ends up battling an octopus to in the process.
Fun story, easy to follow, good lesson on friendship and wonderful, vibrant illustrations. Bound to be a hit with your little one!
In this charming picture book we are presented with a story of three friends on a fishing trip.
Firstly, we have an opportunity to read about three exotic protagonists: Zigby the Zebra, guinea fowl named Bertie Bird and McMeer who is a meerkat. Then the adventure starts. The animals decide to go on a fishing trip after Bertie’s complaints of being tired of standing as a basket during their basketball game. They walk looking for some water and accidently get to a hidden lagoon. They do not suspect that it is a dangerous place. Zigby goes swimming, Bertie decides to build a sandcastle and McMeer sleeps on the hammock leaving his fishing net besides him, which is unnoticeably taken by a scary, giant octopus. Zigby offers to find it and dives into water. He faces the octopus, manages to take the net but unfortunately this giant creature chases Zigby making him really scared. However, thanks to his look he can hide among striped fish and swims away. But the fish net is ripped and the pole is detached. Should they worry? Not at all, as Zigby comes with an amazing idea of using it in the basketball game. Bertie does not have to be a basket anymore.
Brian Paterson’s story is full of vibrant illustrations and has an unpredictable conclusion which relates well to the beginning of the story. The introduction of a dangerous incident and the idea of using the features of Zigby’s appearance to get out of the trouble can appeal to children, so as the conclusion. I would recommend this book to be read to reception or Year 1 classes. Good to read aloud and to act out as it contains lots of dialogues.
This is my child's current favorite book. It's arright. She first heard it at a library storytime and WOULD NOT SHUT UP ABOUT IT until I managed to find a copy.
Zigby is a zebra who hangs out with his pals Bertie the guinea fowl and McMeer the meerkat. My daughter adores animals, and meerkats are one of her favorites, so you can see why this book is a big hit with her.
One day, the animal pals are bored with playing basketball -- Bertie always has to be the net, and he's sick of it. McMeer, who tends toward the dramatic, insists they all come watch him catch fish. They find a beautiful lagoon that seems promising -- but nobody notices the skull-and-crossbones DANGER sign posted on the beach.
When McMeer loses his fishing net in the water, Zigby dives in (title check!) to retrieve it and is attacked by a giant octopus. Thanks to some quick thinking, Zigby camouflages himself amid a school of black-and-white-striped fish, and escapes, with McMeer's now-broken fishing net in tow.
Bertie and McMeer are glad to have Zigby back safe and sound, and the broken fishing net makes the perfect basketball hoop. The End.
So, eh. It's cute. The story is very simple, and I don't find it particularly cute or compelling, but my kid loves it. The illustrations are cute. If I found one of the other Zigby books at the library, I wouldn't, like, hide it from my kid or anything.
