Julia has married Stephen Kerr and is determined to make it work between them in a little Cornish village.
He has his art school and she has her writing but soon things turn sour and Julia constantly finds herself having to choose between her OWN literary art and Stephen's artistic and hedonistic lifestyle.
Somehow they get by and the years pass until Stephen is killed during the war and Julia is left alone to cope with their tempestuous daughter, Caroline.
On a path of self destruction Caroline makes many bad life choices until she is involved in a fatal car accident leaving Julia yet again to pick up the pieces and raise her twins.
After raising two generations and fighting hard to keep Stephen's spirit and dreams alive in the Kerr art school Julia is at last able to make decisions for herself and use her hard won freedom to pursue her own dreams.
The whole story centres on the figure of Julia and her constant sacrifices throughout her life of putting everyone else first and quashing her hopes and dreams.
A very enjoyable, yet quick read with romance, drama and the rich historical background of Cornwall from 1904 onwards to the war years.
