Daniel Scott's haunting and hilarious second collection is set in disparate spots across the American map, from Kansas to Cape Cod to New York City, and yet they are written with such piercing universality that you sense they could be happening right now in your town, on your street, maybe even in your own home. The stories delve deep into the lives and psyches of a stunning array of ordinary American misfits.
First, the writing and the author’s voice is very good. The stories are engaging and easily read. The characters are well developed and I felt like I could picture them easily in my mind. I knew how they behaved and what they most likely would do in the future. So, this aspect of the stories was very good.
My issues was with the endings of each story. The ending felt, rushed, forced, and incomplete. I was reading a good story and then suddenly, a dud ending. I really can’t give more than one star as not a single story contained a satisfying ending. This is unfortunate as the rest of each story was well done.
This was my first time reading Daniel Scott. Now, for starters, I'm torn with Scott. His characters and dialogue certainly stick with me. Especially Emil from "Marginalia" and, as a writer, Scott seems to be a solid model for character driven stories. When it comes to story, some left an impression as original and some were a test to get through. Why not though?
