I didn’t ask for Ethan Holmes to suddenly reappear in my life after breaking my heart. He was my childhood friend, my first love. . . and I never wanted to see him again.
Then, his beloved Pops dies. And his last request?
That the two of us go on a final, weekend-long treasure hunt around Mirror Valley to revisit our childhood haunts.
I thought it’d be easy to keep my distance from Ethan. . .
Until I end up stuck in a car with the only man I’ve ever loved.
The Last Chance Road Trip is a short and sweet romcom novella that serves as a prequel to the Love In Mirror Valley series. You'll find plenty of sweet kisses and sizzling chemistry, but no explicit content. Enjoy hilarious spider-related mishaps, a road trip adventure, all the second chance feels, and an HEA that will make you swoon.
**This story was previously published in the Falling Back Into Love sweet romcom collection. **
Sara Jane Woodley is a Sweet Romance author who is obsessed with Happily Ever Afters!
Inspired by the mountains, Sara Jane writes love stories set in the beautiful nature she hikes, bikes and skis in. Her clean romance books always feature sassy, strong female heroines and fun-filled, playful relationships.
The book started with Val and Ethan’s meeting in MIrror Valley - hanging out in a tree-house(!) and even then I wondered why they had broken up in the first place.
They knew each other since they were children and seemed perfect for each other. Especially enjoyed the flashbacks which came into the story perfectly weaving into the story.
But with Pops death and the reading of his will, the story comes out and the road trip is a cute topping in it.
The way Ethan and Val get to know each other again is told with perfect romance and humour and made me laugh so many times.
So when Ethan has to make a choice in the end, what does he choose?
Val and Ethan’s chemistry was beautiful and their conversation and their kiss, took their love to the next level.
Oh my...this sweet novella had everything! Laughs, sweet tender moments, flashbacks, forgiveness, second chances, and so much more.
I just adored Val and Ethan and getting to see what brought them together in high school and where they are now. And I loved getting another glimpse of Ivy 😍
2.75/5⭐️, this book was mediocre. The end was cute, but the whole book was kind of cringe? The premise of the book is a typical problem that you would have in a relationship, but the characters are just really childish. I found it hard to get through the book, just because it wasn’t super believable.
goodreads is lying because this most definitely was not book 1.5 and actually took place before book 1. val and ethan were in book 1 and i am sure i would have enjoyed it much more if i had read this supposed “book 1.5” first. i’m upset.
Ethan and Val were in love in high school, until he left town and left her. She threw herself into a new relationship that she just gets out of 4 years later.
Now Val wants to focus on her new job, but Ethan’s Pop’s will sends him on a road trip, requesting that Val come along.
They revisit old haunts, remember fun and love, and realize they still want that with each other.
Val forgives Ethan, and he’s determined to choose being with her no matter what they do or where they do it.
A fun story with interesting stops, but unfortunately the treasure hunt, which was part of the reason for the road trip, falls away. Still a good book, but the treasure would have made a neater ending.
This was such a cute novella with a second-chance romance trope!
I loved Ethan and Val and loved their story of reconnecting during their road trip! I also enjoyed getting some background is their relationship throughout the story. I was definitely rooting for them to rekindle their love! Super cute!
This honestly was just not it? I'm a sucker for a friends to lovers trope but this just rubbed me the wrong way. I don't know man I can't even express what exactly I didn't like but it gave me the ick. There was also not a solid plot in sight. Like not a single tear was shed and for me that is really hard do. Hope that was helpful🤣
The premise of the book is that the couple go on a "treasure hunt", but there's no treasure hunt. They go visit a few places, like a list of things they have to do, but there's nothing about puzzles or having to put any thought into it. It's just a couple falling back in love, and even that part is poorly written. Very superficial. Little development. Glad I didn't pay for this book.

I want to continue reading what happened next with Val & Ethan. How their relationship grew & changed. How Ethan bought the coffee shop & opened a cafe. I ant to know how they balanced running a business & Val having a job too. Where they ended up living & how many kids they had.
Val grew up with Ethan they were inseparable. The had tons of sleepovers. They had so many they couldn't sleep without the other sharing a bed. When they got older their parents forbid them from sleeping over anymore. That didn't stop Ethan from climbing in her window every night. With Ethan's mom working nights he didn't like being by himself. Of course, the parents knew what was going on they just never said anything. At some point they both started seeing one another as more than friends. They dated & Ethan was going to give her a promise ring. However, he found out his mom was moving & he couldn't let her go alone. Instead of giving Val the ring he told her he wanted to go back to being friends. He decided for them both. And she didn't fight him on it. He broke her heart! He ended up going to culinary school. He was studying how to be a sous chef. He visited his grandparents during the 4 years he was in school. Val did everything she could to avoid him. She hid when he was in town. He reached out to her several times while he was gone & she never responded. He regretted his decision everyday. They both thought about each other. Val dated one or two guys after Ethan dumped her. They never lasted because she lost interest. Ethan's dates were short because he kept comparing them to Val.
When his grandpa died he had to come for the reading of the will. I love his grandpa! He purposely put a treasure hunt (scavenger hunt) in his will. And it said that he had to take Val with him. Ethan wasn't sure she'd go. Were it not for a co-worker & the fact this was for Ethan's grandpa who she loved dearly she would have said no. Grandpa put down locations that meant a lot to Ethan & Val. Places they used to spend a lot of time at. Several times they almost kiss but get interrupted.
Ethan realizes he went to school for something that wasn't his dream job. After thinking about what he really wants he gets his future job status figured out. Val keeps jumping to the conclusion that Ethan is going to leave her again. She lets fear rule her life. She runs away so she doesn't have to face the pain. She didn't even let Ethan finish talking to her. Definitely something she will need to work on if she wants the relationship to progress. The ending is sweet but like I said above this was too short & felt unfinished.
– this was in the limited edition Fall Back Into Love romantic comedy collection
– this is a prequel to Sara’s Love in Mirror Valley series, but can be read as a stand-alone
– this is told from Val & Ethan’s points of view (past & present)
Review:
I liked not really knowing what it was that made Val & Ethan separate straight away. It was nice to get a few steps of the past in between what was happening in the current story. I loved that Val enjoyed brownies (almost any kind, I wish I could stomach as many as she ate within the story!) and that Ethan remembered this in his plan to apologize and try for a second chance. I also liked reading scenes with Ethan’s granddad in it, he was funny and liked to poke fun at the couple. It was clear that both Val & Ethan loved him and would do pretty much anything he’d ask. Some of my favorite scenes in this story included: paint balling, the water park, the lake, the flashback scenes, and Val’s many mishaps 😂.
Summary:
Val thought she had something lasting with Ethan back in high school, but that went down the drain when he broke up with her and moved out of town. She should have known he’d be back with his grandparents staying behind, but never thought about it. So when he shows up, it’s unexpected. Especially when he asks her to join him on one last road trip treasure hunt that his granddad set up for them in his will. Val would do anything for his late granddad, even spend time with the guy who broke her heart.
Ethan regrets what he did to Val all those years ago. If he could go back in time, he would change what he did so they never grew apart. But maybe his granddad’s request can give him the chance to fix everything. And show Val just how much she still means to him…
Val and Ethan’s story is packed full of the first love, second chance, sweet romance, and I loved every minute of it. There’s something about small town’s that just make everything better. Learning about their history and reading from another perspective about Ivy just made it feel familiar. How the characters interact with each other made me wish I could dive right into the pages. Knowing how to forgive and move forward, not letting it control your ever decision, something that with time and effort, can be extremely healing.
“Chemistry, passion, all that will come and go. But a rock-solid friendship will carry you through the hard times.”
“Maybe Pops was onto something with this last cunning plan of his. Maybe this is my opportunity to correct my mistakes and make amends. Maybe this is my last chance to spend real, proper time with the first—and only—girl I ever loved.”
“Forgiveness is… complicated. I feel like it shifts, moves, is almost a living thing. If you want to have an ongoing relationship with someone—as I do with Alicia, most of the time—the ability to forgive is key. People hurt people, it’s a fact of life. Forgiveness is what you do with that hurt.”
“No one is telling you to forget anything. I’m just saying that you have to keep going. Because when the stars align and things go right… whew. Love is always worth fighting for. My advice is simply not to run away from someone who’s showing you his whole heart.”
“You never have to worry about me not wanting you. I am the one who needs to deserve you, Val, who has to deserve a second chance. And I want you to know that I’m going to fight for you. Since spending time with you, it’s like my life has righted itself again. You are my direction.”
This novella is a prequel to the Love in Mirror Valley series, but works well as a standalone.
On the way to her first day as a receptionist at the Brookrose Inn, Valentina "Val" Reyes-Murphy decides to take a detour to her old childhood treehouse. Unfortunately, she manages to tear her brand-new trousers as she's climbing up, which of course is when her childhood friend and former boyfriend, Ethan Holmes, walks up. He's just in time to catch Val when she falls out of the treehouse after being spooked by what she thinks is a giant spider. Ethan and Val haven't seen or spoken with each other since their breakup four years ago, after which Ethan left town for culinary school in Montana. He's back in Mirror Valley to honor his late grandfather's final request: a road trip treasure hunt with Val. Now he just has to persuade her to go with him...
Even though this was a relatively short story, it didn't feel much like a novella to me at all because the characters were so endearing and three-dimensional. I think a lot of that can be attributed to the story's structure, which relied on a series of flashbacks to slowly reveal the exact circumstances behind Val and Ethan's breakup back in high school. The flashbacks were very helpful in understanding why Val was so hesitant to trust Ethan again as well as how they might be able to work towards their second chance in the present.
Overall, I loved this funny, sweet, and heartfelt story and highly recommend it for fans of sweet contemporary romance and romantic comedy. I look forward to reading whatever Sara Jane Woodley writes next!

Brief Synopsis: Ethan Holmes is back in Mirror Valley after his grandpa’s death. In the will, his grandpa requested that Ethan take a road trip in order to acquire some of the items left in the will. The condition? It has to be with Val, Ethan’s former best friend and ex-girlfriend. Val hasn’t spoken to Ethan in four years since he broke her heart. But she’ll do anything to honor Pops. As the two set out on the road trip, Ethan decides this is his last chance to show Val exactly what she means to him.
So I read The Next Worst Thing (one of the books that inspired me to start a bookstagram) and loved it so much. I was so excited to read this prequel novella. This is the story of Val and Ethan. Val works at the Brookstone Inn which is run by Ivy, the main character in The Next Worst Thing.
I really enjoyed both Val and Ethan. I think Sara Jane Woolley does a wonderful job of writing characters that you are drawn to. I loved reading as Val and Ethan not only navigated the trip but also navigated their feelings for one another. Since novellas are short, things aren’t unnecessarily drawn out. So I loved that Ethan and Val were able to quickly realize their feelings for each other and communicate about what they meant to one another.
This novella is part of a romantic comedy collection called Fall Back Into Love that comes out in a few weeks. I’m excited to read more in that collection and definitely excited for the sequel to The Next Worst Thing.
(Also loved the Aston Falls reference in this novella and excited to dive into that series!)
I picked up this book after reading 'The next worst thing', and it was such a disappointment.
The reason for first break-up of the lead couple was too unconvincing. They were soooo much in love that they were considering growing old together, and then, the hero comes to know that his mom's BF broke up with her (he didn't want to be in an LDR). The same guy who was about to propose to the heroine that night, breaks off with her, spouting some nonsense about wanting to stay friends (In his mind he is doing what is 'best for her' because 'long distance never works'. Like what nonsense??) I hate second chance romances for this very reason.
And then, the heroine is in looooove again with a new boy in just two months! Did you even like the guy in the first place, woman? Ever heard of communication? If the heroine is refusing calls, message her, write a letter, bang her door down until she talks to you..the parentals all ship this couple like crazy..why not ask for their help??
Okay fine, they got together after four years and there is not even a proper sorry or grovel from the hero. She bats her eyelashes; he flexes his muscles and bam! they are back together!
Oh yes, they have this roadtrip because the hero's (dead) grandpa wants them to do a treasure hunt together and we are never told why they just keep going from place to place and call it treasure hunt.

The Last Chance Road Trip is a prequel novella in the Love in Mirror Valley series. It centers around Ethan and Val and gives the history of their relationship. Ethan and Val grew up as best friends until one day in high school when they became more. Circumstances later tore them apart and they haven't talked in years. After Ethan's grandfather passes away, he leaves a stipulation in his will. Ethan is to go on a road trip with Val and complete different tasks along the way. But first they must thaw the ice between them so they can get the most of their trip. As they complete the challenges along the way, they mend their hearts and relationship. Their last chance road trip opens up to a second chance for love.
Ethan and Val were side characters in the Love in Mirror Valley series that we didn't know much about. I enjoyed getting to know them through this novella. I also liked how the story tied together with the Aston Falls series as well! This did not read like a novella usually does for me, where I tend to think they are too short or feel rushed. Instead this book had a good pace and felt detailed even though it was concise. I always love a good road trip story and this was a quick and enjoyable read.
I love a good road trip forced proximity story and this one was really cute. Ethan and Val dated in highschool and are running into each other years later back in their hometown. Ethan’s grandpa had passed away and one of his requests was for Ethan to take a roadtrip with Val and visit some favorite spots from their childhood. The feeling for each other had never really gone away for either of them and the roadtrip gave them a chance to work through what had happened in high school. They were so cute together and Ethan figuring out how to shoot his shot was so fun.
The only part that I didn’t love was the 3rd act conflict. Val freaked out over something Ethan had done and ran off before he could explain how happy he was about his decision. Instead she made huge assumptions and basically made it impossible for Ethan to have made the right decision. Luckily it didn’t last long and she realized she overreacted, but I thought it was an over the top reaction and didn’t make a ton of sense.
Overall, it was a super sweet story and I enjoyed the roadtrip down memory lane giving them a second chance at a relationship.
This story is a short and sweet novella that is a prequel to the " Love In Mirror Valley" series. All the characters were fun to read about. The two characters were Ethan Holmes and Val.
Ethan and Val are childhood friends who started to like each other. They decide to start dating each other. On a special day that Ethan has set up for her, something happened that Ethan has to move and break up. Years later, he is now back in town for his granddad's funeral and reading of the will. His granddad will have a clause for Ethan and Val they have to go on a treasure hunt. Will they both find something while doing the treasure hunt trip?
This was a fun, short, and sweet rom-com to read. It had action, adventure, and a little bit of drama throughout. There were a few giggles within.
I was looking through the Kindle book app. for a story that had a trope about a road trip. So when I saw this, I decided to try it. I'm happy that I did it was so much fun. This is my honest, unbiased opinion.
What I read: The Last Chance Road Trip by Sara Jane Woodley
Why I picked it up: I’ve been loving this series, so I borrowed all of them.
How I read it: On Kindle Unlimited
What it’s about: Val and Ethan were a couple the summer between Junior and Senior year, and then he moved to Montana for his mom’s job and they haven’t spoken once in the four and half years since. Now he’s back for his grandfather’s funeral and the will states he needs to take one more road trip, scavenger hunt, adventure – and Val’s to come along. Will these four days change their relationship status from “not speaking” to “more than friends”?
What I liked: I loved how attentive and aware Ethan was of Val throughout the road trip.
What I disliked: I just wanted more of their story – this is listed as 1.5, but it’s really 0.5 to the series.
Genre: Chaste love story.
Rating & Recommendation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and as part of the series – but read it first!
This start of the series has me so excited! 😂 the first few lines.
I loved seeing the past and present chapters intertwined. It was so well done.
Their banter was so chill and really friendly. I liked how she didn't hold a grudge, but also knew to be careful. I liked Val, she was kind & fun.
Their stops in the road trip were so cute. I loved the kiss! 🔥 But I also loved how grounded Val was!
I loved that they were moving through things. It felt like agony the wait for them to talk about the problem. However it was really sweet when they did.
The last chapter was the best! I loved their talks & just how much they meant to each other. Book 2 coming next💙.
Fav scenes: 🎯Paintball 🌳Tree house 💦Water park 🗻The lake
I LOVED The Next Worst Thing, so knowing Val and Ethan’s story was next… well I obviously couldn’t wait. Who needs sleep anyway?
Valentina Brinn Reyes-Murphy, AKA Val. Me and her have a lot in common. NO SPIDERS 😱. Enough said. Just kidding because I cannot say enough about her! I loved her girl boss energy and loving, Ivy trusting, and adventuring spirit, even when she was scared of being hurt. She is a girl boss 👑
Ethan Holmes. Okay, that name??? Amazing. And HE CAN BAKE and COOL. 💍 Seeing him love her the entire book was amazing, and so sad because of her hurt over their breakup.
It was so fun to see Ivy and Daisy pre-The Next Worst Thing and their dynamic.
This books has 👌kisses. I mean, childhood besties to lovers to strangers to lovers??? The chemistry is an A+. There was no swearing 🧼
So jump into this waterslide, I mean, roller coaster of a book 😉 and enjoy it! It’s definitely worth every second!
I have read some amazing novellas, but I have to admit that novellas still are not my favorite because I’ve tried some before that felt too short and had too much insta-love. But I love stories by Sara Jane Woodley, so I knew I needed to read this novella! And it was an amazing one! Because it’s a second chance romance, none of it felt like insta-love, which I appreciated. The story goes between the past and the present to show their relationship at both times, which gave a fullness to the story that I loved! Mixing the tropes of second chance romance with best friends to more was clever, and I enjoyed how that affected both of those tropes and seeing how it played out in Val and Ethan’s story!
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 Author Sara Jane Woodley you've done it again! this book was super cute. It is a novella in the 'love in mirror valley' series that follows Val and Ethan on a road trip that reignites the love they once had. This story is a childhood best friends to lovers, second chance romance. The chapters switch between both characters' pov's and also a time skip between now and four years ago, when they broke up. This was a very fun and interesting way to tell the story and i loved reading both timelines at once. Though this book was short, it was amazing and from the moment i picked it up i just could not put it back down. If you haven't yet read the 'love in mirror valley' series i suggest you absolutely do if you love cute, sweet, clean rom-coms.
I really liked this. It is a prequel novella to The Next Worst Thing, but the story didn't feel like it all happened too fast. It is a childhood best friends to lovers with second chance, romantic comedy, and I liked that it was dual POV and dual timeline because it works so much with this types of stories, because we can see them falling in love, the reason they fell apart and how they can work things out in the now. I loved knowing Val and Ethan and seeing some of the characters of the next book. It is a very good novella, and everything works out in a great way at the end.
*I've received an ARC of this book, from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book revolves around Ethan, a culinary expert and Valentina, his ex, his best friend. Throughout the book we get a past-present timeline in which we learn about the relationship they had. The main plot of the story follows Ethan when he receives a mission from his grandfather about travelling to complete different tasks with and only with Valentina. The weekend long trip takes them to different locations in Mirror Valley that represent their childhood, making them relive their lives together.
The story plot was a good concept but the execution was not something I enjoyed. Some parts of the book were really unrealistic and personally so unconvincing to me. The book did frustrate me a bit as it did feel a little childish at points but the only saving grace was the cute things that Ethan did.
This was a nice little sweet read in which Ethan's late grandfather sent him on a road trip with an ex girlfriend of his. It was an entertaining quick story. The reason for the break-up seemed pretty benign and amicable for the amount of avoidance. And I wanted a bit more resolution for the grandfather's scheme. The road trip was described as a treasure hunt so I was expecting treasures but unless you count their love, treasures just aren't a thing.
Steam level: Kissing. I got this as a freebie for Amazon.
Last Chance Road Trip: Val and Ethan were best friends growing up. Their friendship evolved and they fell in love in high school. Then Ethan broke Val’s heart. They haven’t spoken in four years, until Ethan comes to town for his grandfather’s funeral. And his Pops had one last request: Ethan take Val on a road trip/scavenger hunt. But can they even be near each other? Or will their past feelings come back?
This was a cute little novella. I liked it fine! The main couple is adorable, and I was really interested in the few minor characters introduced, especially Val’s new boss, so you know I’ll be reading the whole series to see what else happens in this little town. This was a cute and funny rom-com that does what it says on the tin. It was really enjoyable! Any problems I have with it are me problems, specifically, I felt 100 years old reading this. These crazy kids are only 22 and act like they need to have their whole lives hammered out already. There is also a high school pre-posal thing and…idk, I am old so it was hard for me personally to get worked up about the stakes. They are just babies! I’m also wondering is this is another inspirational romance. That would explain some things. Either way, I look forward to the rest of the series!
This was a cute intro to the Mirror Valley series. It’s got a lot of my least favorite tropes though, with the frustrating miscommunication and I didn’t love the way it was written with the flashbacks slowly leading up to the “reveal” of what happened. These are totally me issues though and not a reflection on the story itself. I’ve read and loved the next 2 books in the series and am glad I read this to better understand some of the other characters as well as the relationship to the Aston Valley series.
Ethan is back in town after his grandfather's death. In the will, he is required to go on a road trip with his ex, Val, on a treasure hunt of sorts.
I loved the flashbacks because I got to see how their relationship came to be. One of my favourite scenes was on the waterslide. Some close proximity action always has me enthralled 😂 Ethan was such a sweet character, always taking care of his own. Baking all sorts of treats including brownies just for Val, just wonderful 🥰
They worked through their differences to come to a satisfying conclusion. I loved that.
I love stories where family is important, and especially when they're loving and supportive. Ethan's Pops and his Mom were that for him. Val's family and friends are positive and supportive of her also. I love how Val and Ethan are respectful of each other after so many years of being apart. I love their childhood friendship that turned into more until it wasn't. It's a fun, feel-good story with a happy ending that can easily be read and enjoyed in a day.
