Never Go Back: An Evan Buckley Crime Thriller

Rate this book
When the heir to a billion-dollar business empire goes missing in the medieval city of Cambridge in England, it soon becomes clear to PI Evan Buckley that the secretive family who hired him to find Barrett Bradlee haven't told him the whole truth. Far from it. Worse, Barrett’s problems didn’t start until he asked the wrong people the wrong questions about his own family.

As Evan tracks Barrett from the narrow cobbled streets of the city to the windswept watery expanses of the East Anglian fens, one question refuses to go unanswered - what lies behind Barrett's obsession with the US Air Force base at Lakenheath, the heart of the CIA's covert operations in England at the height of the Cold War?

As the mystery unravels, Evan finds himself caught up in a violent showdown that's been brewing for sixty years, a bitter feud between Barrett's family and that of a ruthless politician at the core of the British establishment, a powerful and desperate man with everything to lose who'll stop at nothing to prevent the dark secrets of his own family's past from coming to light.

In a change of scenery for Evan he finds himself in the UK, in the villages around Cambridge. I thoroughly enjoyed setting and loved the English phrases.

Evan is sent to England in seach of a missing heir, on his first trip Guillory accompanies him and it was nice to have the pair working the case together. As is usual with Evan's cases, what sounded like a simple missing person turns out to be a huge can of worms and naturally Evan finds himself knee deep in trouble.

I enjoy Harper's ability to make every book different while retaining that Evan 'charm' and the continuity of some characters and the little glimpses into the past that has shaped Evan's life.

4 stars and only because I found it irritating to be constantly given translations of English words not commonly used in the US, after a while they became distracting and did spoil the book a little for me. It's such a shame an author feels the need to explain the language used when it is correct for the setting.

Bad To The Bones, #1 - Read a couple of freebies by this author and dug this book out of my library. This is an interesting and immersing, this intense read is difficult to put down. Good characters that are easy to either like or dislike. The story lines are interesting. There are twists, turns and misdirects that keep the pages flipping to the end. It is too easy to turn this review into a book report. Never mind Ryder at the beginning, the book just gets better with each page read. 5*

Kentucky Vice, #2 - OK, I should have stopped with the first book, this one is rather silly. Some real good characters, good story lines but not much realism, lots of hollywood-style tripe. Instead of immersing myself in the dramatic scenes, I was laughing myself silly. This is still a fun read but it is labeled a thriller, falls short by a long shot. The author acts a bit like the Nutjob that brings the story to the end, explaining everything while running through a gamut of emotions, from normal to a raving lunatic. NO, ole James isn't a lunatic, but he lost a grip on his writing style and went plumb silly with events, dialog and moving from drama to slapstick comedy and Cozy-style genres. Read it for entertainment knowing that the last part of the book forgot the style and genre of the beginning. Just because KV is so funny and there are two worthy female characters, this gets four stars. Else, two stars would be being nice. 4*

Sins of the Father, #3 - Seems like the women are "lemon-sucker" lipped whiners and the male characters are raving lunatics wanting to hurt or kill someone, common types for the last two books. The beginning of this story is a bit hollywood-style silliness but improves as the story goes on. The noose is not removed, which is idiotic, but the story had to continue. Interesting story lines blending the new and foundation. Violence, bloody but not detailed gory. This takes place not long after the previous story ends. Touch of romance. Serendipitous end to a sad case. That is Grandfather, not grandfather. 4*

Once Bitten, #17 - Since the last book of this series I read was Sins of the Father, #3, I lost a lot of the foundation and was confused by some of the references to the past. That aside, this is still an interesting story with good story lines. The misdirections were not as convincing about which criminal(s) turned to law. In previous books, the misdirections were more successful. Although from Sins, I received the impression that Crow would join the regular cast of characters, I wished I had read the other books. Too many "what happened" questions. While not what I would call a standalone, Once Bitten is still an interesting story. 4*

Never Go Back, #18 - An interesting read with plenty of jawing between the two not partners as they search for a missing American student studying in England. A lot of happenings, good, bad and ugly, made for a good read as the present mingles with the past. 4*

See No Evil - With this bit on the wordy side story, I was confused by some of Evan's ramblings and some of his references to the past. I lost a lot of the foundation not reading the books between Sins of the Father and Once Bitten. That aside, this is still an interesting story with good story lines. I like the misdirection and the obvious is steady changing. I did not get the killer, but found the activities of this person of interest. Compared to the first three books, the writing style has improved for the better. 4*

Fallen Angel - It's an OK, short read. No surprises, an old story retold by others. 3*

A Rock And A Hard Place - This is a better short story than Fallen Angel. Interesting with a good story line. 4*

Another thrilling addition to the Evan Buckley thriller series with also a change of location as Evan and Kate Guillory go to the UK. Well London and Cambridge to be exact.
Elvin is approached by a Reece Chandler an attorney and asked to take on a case for a Benjamin Bradley a billion heir owner of Bradlee Technologies Corporation being a defense contractor. The story is about Barrett who is his heir and recently gone missing and with no contact causing worry. and some concerns.
However with Barrett having been known and having a history for towing the line being both aloof and wayward it still leaves Bradley and his family unsure, so no police called as yet. But all things being considered as Bradley has lost contact with both Barrett family and the university at Cambridge in England for several weeks Evan takes on this routine case taking Kate on vocation to accompany him while he looking for him
Evan and Kate soon learn that the secretive family haven’t told them the whole truth and things aren’t what they first seemed. So as the investigation develops and unravels more and more the US Air Force base at Lakenheath and the CIA’s covert operations in England at the height of the cold war seems to be a link somehow. On a second visit to the UK this link then puts Evan in danger and he heads into a violent showdown with people determined to stop the investigation at all costs.
As always an excellent read, with great interaction, banter and quips between Evan and Kate that makes the reading both entertaining humorous and enjoyable yet maintaining the thriller aspect albeit a bit tongue in cheek at times but it will keep you turning pages faster and faster to get answers and to the WOW ending.

I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

The story begins with Evan and Kate at their normal tavern when Evan is approached by someone who wants his help. After listening to what was wanted, Evan tells Kate what it entails and asks her if she wants to go to England with him for this job. The case has Evan looking for Barrett, the grandson of a wealthy client who hasn't heard from him in several weeks and is concerned.

Evan along with Kate fly to England to begin the search. The only information that Evan has is this individual's address and the fact that he is a post Grad student at Cambridge. Evan eventually gathers some information from other people who live in the same building. Eventually Evan learns what happened to Barrett. After Evan and Kate returned back home a period passed when once again Evan was asked to go back to help with proving the innocence of the party that was arrested for Barrett's disappearance. Once Evan got back to England he became aware of a feud that happened over 60 years ago. As Evan become more familiar with the background, he began to gather information that would free the individual charged with Bartlett's disappearance. Things came to a head finally with information from the sister-in-law of the original client laid out all of the details related to the events which happened 60 years earlier.

To learn what the resolution on Bartletts' disappearance, what event happened 60 years earlier and how this conclusion answered all of the questions, then you need to read this book.

Evan is asked to find a missing person, Barrett Bradlee, who lives in Cambridge, England. According to his grandfather, Barrett is the heir to a billion-dollar company. Evan asks his friend, Detective Kate Guillory, if she’d like to accompany him on the trip; she accepts. They soon find that everyone in Battett’s family and friends has something to hide, which turns into a twisting, turning search that leaves the investigators, and the reader, guessing. Mr. Harper has a knack for writing complicated mysteries that keep me on the edge of my seat, not wanting to put the book down, even to go to bed. I enjoy Evan’s stick-to-it approach, even in the face of constant put-downs from Kate, Crow and other associates, which leads him to self-criticism. He seems to take it in stride and makes for some hilarious moments. You’d think after he’s had a lot of success closing his cases that they’d give him the benefit of the doubts...at least some of the time! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed quite a few books in this series; they have all been winners. I received a complimentary copy – this is my honest review.

Best Evan Buckley Ever

Evan is hired to find a wealthy old man’s grandson, Barrett, his only heir. The hunt takes Evan and Guillory to Cambridge, England where Barrett has been attending college. Having breakfast Their first morning in England, Evan is introduced to black pudding. (You have to read the book.) Evan learns a bit about Barrett’s comings and goings from people who know him and some who hate him, but no one knows where he is. Evan is more intrigued as it becomes evident that Barrett has been obsessed with the US Air Force base at Lakenheath, the heart of the CIA's covert operations in England at the height of the Cold War. After a surprise turn of events, Evan goes back to Cambridge on his own to find the real truth behind the story he has been told.

I really enjoyed this book, which was centered on Evan for the most part, without all the bickering from Guillory throughout the whole story. It gave Evan the chance to show his own abilities and confidence, and felt more like a true mystery.

James Harper does it again. This time Evan heads to England and Guillory goes along for the ride. They are on the case of a dead billionaire's grandson. Once again Harper is at his best, taking us on a long convoluted journey with our favourite private detective. It's a complex journey full of humour, twists and turns. You think you have it worked out and then it takes another turn sometimes a blind alley, sometimes another lead. Loved it. I have had the privilege of being on this journey from the start and every book has been a great read. With anticipation for the next adventure.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and I voluntarily leave this honest review.

Another one where the teaser sets the expectations - 'Heaven hath no rage like love to hatred turn'd.' In this one, we wind up in Cambridge, England where the beer is served warm. We fans know how Evan feels about warm beer. He and Kate will have to work fast, solve this one, and head back to the Jerusalem Tavern and ice cold beer. The back-and-forth between Evan and Kate is classic and I loved the English visits - especially the trip to participate in the British annual fete to honor the American dead from WWII. This was a very good read. I am pleased to recommend James Harper to friends and family. He keeps the light on - and that's a good thing.

Wow, I loved this book!
Great storyline.
Great characters - new and old.
Great setting - here in the UK.
Evan (PI) is accompanied by Kate (Police Officer) on this assignment, to find (what started out to be) a missing person but of course, there’s always more to it, much, much more…………
Evan and Kate made a good team, worked well together and it was noticeable how much their relationship had evolved throughout the series.

It was really great having Guillory and Evan working together - or at least Evan working and Guillory poking fun at him and trying to keep him in line. Traveling to the UK to find a missing heir who has been attending Uni there, Evan may have taken on too much. I loved the beautiful descriptions of the buildings, scenery and people. The twists and turns, the consistent puzzling clues made this a page turner that I couldn't put down. I received this ARC and this is my honest review.

They just keep getting better and better

I have read every one of the books in this series and I think this is the best one yet. I love the banter between the main characters and how they go about helping each other on the jobs that Evan gets and Kate helps with her police knowledge. I like that even though they do not always do things legally correct, they do the "right thing".

Another good read from James Harper.
I enjoyed the change of setting. There were some amusing moments with Evan and Kate being somewhere foreign. As always, I love the sarcastic way Evan and Kate speak to each other.
The like that the plots of these books always seem quite involved.
I do sometimes struggle to keep up with all the characters in this series and this was one of those books.

Evan takes on a job looking for a lost grandson in England. Him and Kate take a working vacation to try and crack the case but has he bitten off more than he can chew? This case goes back years to an American air force base in the 1950s where secrets were covered up. This is Kate and Evan at their very best and one that is very hard to put down.

The ending was so good I had to read it more than once - Buckley sure has a way with words!
Brilliant book, set in England this time which was a nice touch and for once Buckley is helping a little 'old lady.'
I really enjoyed the book, it had a nice rythem to it and was very readable, I was quite sad when I had finished it.

Explosive

The fact that Evan had his girlfriend the cop go with him to England to investigate. All of the excitement kept me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out where was Barrett.

Super fun read. I am enjoying this series and book #18 does not disappoint. There is nothing like a good mystery/thriller that involves old family secrets, ruthless politicians, and more set in the U.K.
I received this book as an Advanced Reader's Copy.

Twist and turns and down right confusion.
Evan has his hands tied in England a place he has NO connections what-so-ever.
Guillory and Evan start out together but another twist causes our man even to go it alone again.
He finds that history can be twisted to your own story if there is nobody left to call it into question.
Evan has to strip right from wrong, fact from fiction, history from memories and hidden stories that should not rise again, but do.
Read this twisted tale and see for yourself how James Harper has created a story of stories.

This book was one of my favorites in the series. I thought the characters were intriguing and the story had a mystery that kept me interested throughout. Also plenty of humor.
