A lovely collection of tales. Starts with the absolute banger The Signalman by Dickens, which is always worthy of a reread and ends with a sweet, but eerie tale of a life lived along railway lines with The Man Who Rode the Trains. I particularly enjoyed The Very Silent Traveller, which had a brilliant ending. I'm not sure why I took such a long break before finishing this because it's a great collection!

Somewhat predictable and a sameness in the older stories, but well-told, and effective for their brevity (a relief from the bloatedness of much of the more modern fiction I've been reading.) Standouts: Dickens: The Signalman; Jack Finney: The Third Level; Paul Carter: The Man Who Rode the Trains.
