This book was aimed at a much younger age group, so it was a little uninteresting to me. However, it had a lot of great tips! This book is packed with great tips on simple care for everything from home-made manicures and pedicures, to ways to shave properly. The book asks readers to find the positive aspects to any flaw they have, and to embrace it instead. It's a great book for any young girl!

The Lily Series, written by popular author Nancy Rue, is a series written for girls ages 7-11, and stars Lily Robbins and her friends as they grow and discover that the most important beauty is the true beauty God put inside each of them. The Beauty Book is a companion book to the fictional series that starts off with Here's Lily! Each chapter deals with a different aspect of beauty, from the first chapter that appropriately assures girls that God made each girl exactly the way He intends them to be, to chapters on hair, skin, make-up and clothes. Each chapter features a "GIRLZ Want to Know" section where Lily and her friends pose questions that the author answers with godly wisdom and which also provides practical advice. There are also short and interesting quizzes that help show girls areas they need to work on, as well as sections called "Talking to God About It" which guide girls in praying to God about every part of their life - and their body - teaching them that he cares about every part of them.

The Beauty Book is a book that parents everywhere should plan on putting into the hands of their pre-teen daughters. My own daughter was fascinated with the book, interested in everything from the imaginative illustrations to the neat facts contained in the book about how to care for your body. But what my wife and I are most impressed with about the book is how clearly it highlights the fact that God knew exactly what he was doing when he created each girl to be unique and beautiful in their own way. How fantastic that a book on beauty includes references from the Bible and prayers to God! Who better to talk to than the very creator of the body that is undergoing such mysterious changes? Any girl who reads this book will walk away with some practical ideas about how to take care of their outward beauty while feeling assured that God truly loves them and has made them beautiful, inside and out. In a culture that seems obsessed with outward appearance, this book is a breath of fresh air and gets my parental seal of approval.

Highly recommended, I award this book 5 out of 5 stars.

As a mom with two daughters I’m always on the look out for books that inspire godly beauty and Biblical insights into being a girl. The Beauty Book is definitely one of those books that I’m glad to be able to share with my girls. My daughters are 10 and 7 and as they get older they are struggling to find out who they are and who they are supposed to be according to God – and having this book along side us while studying the Bible is exactly what we need. I’m not saying I agree with everything in the book, I don’t think girls need to get their hair trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks – I trim mine maybe once or twice a year – and don’t have issues with hair not growing or with split ends. However the advice given to girls is that if your parents say no, then it’s no, and maybe you can bring it up again in X months. Right before I wrote this review my 10 year old asked if she could dye her hair green – um, no!

As girls mature younger and younger, they are going to have questions about their bodies and this book does a great job in answering those questions without taking away the parent’s involvement. There is mention of breasts and shaving but if your daughter is reaching or has reached this point then it’s really a non-issue as it’s handled very well and from a Biblical standpoint of how to deal with the changes. This is not a book to answer in depth questions such as body changes, but more in how to take care of their temple – their body, as they go through changes that have them unsure of themselves and the others around them.

This is a great read for all ages. It helps show you that God loves us no matter what we look like, or what the "IN" look is. It gives great quotes from the bible proving their points in this book.

My daughter wants to re-read this already and I thought it was a good read.

It tells of many different aspects that everyone should think about.

I like the book. It made me remembers all the things I used to do or wear when I was a kid/tween. I love to wear anything that I think will make look pretty and nice without concerning what others would say. Let say that my taste in fashion or clothes is not as fantastic as my piles of books!

I admit that the book is more related to Christians according to Bible. However, I believe that every religion has their own belief and this book actually quoted some from the Bible which I'm not really familiar about it. And I think good advices are acceptable regardless of what religion you are. I like the illustrations in the book and make it suitable to girls, and more enjoyable. Adding a little bit more details or explanation would make it much better for kids/teens understanding.

This book also randomly popped into my mind and I had to review it. This book constantly encouraged girls to enjoy beauty without comparing oneself to others, while constantly making comparisons. I remember taking a quiz to see if I played “The Comparison Game” and the questions were things like “Are you the tallest or the shortest in your class?” and, being a very short girl, I knew I was the shortest and that gave me a super low score (which bothered me, as a 9 year old kid). After all this, one of the chapters literally began with something like, “Have you ever gone to the beach with a friend who’s all put together but she has gnarly feet or hard heels?” Yeah. Message /really/ well executed. *eye roll* The book also pretended to be an authority on African-American hair by responding to a “question” (by one of the characters of the Lilly series) about hair breakage by just saying “Get a hot oil treatment!!” While I’m not an authority on African-American hair either, I’m pretty sure that’s not the only thing that goes into hair styling. To pretend like you know what goes into such a rich culture was literally (one of) the stupidest moves you could make. Don’t buy it. Go on Pinterest and find out how to do a pedicure or something.

To be fair, I didn't read the whole thing - I got this practically free and picked it up for my niece, so I just flipped through it.

I liked that the author reinforced the notion of girls deferring to their parents' authority in matters of attire, makeup, etc.

However, even in my brief flipping, I came across information that is just wrong, or incomplete. For example, Rue states that flats should have at least a 3/4" heel (google Katy Bowman + feet to view my opinion on that!), "most" girls need to wash their hair several times a week (white girls, maybe, but definitely not black girls), and that girls should get their hair trimmed every 4-6 weeks - in my opinion, that's way too often for young girls; even I don't do that, and I'm an adult.

Honestly, the fact that Rue presented herself as an authority on this subject was just a little annoying...

Fundamentalist weirdness that contributes to the very problem its claims to address

The problem with this book (and others like it) is that it assumes the issue with low self esteem in your appearance can be solved by focusing on other, different physical features, instead of saying something about how that can be a good starting point but ultimately your goal should be to stop using your physical features as the basis for your self confidence.

In my thirties, I am definitely not the target audience for Nancy Rue's The Beauty Book. Described by the publisher as being for ages 7-11, this cute, quick read is decidedly written for a preteen audience. However, in reading to review the book, I found myself remembering what it was like being an awkward 10-year-old girl. The Beauty Book would have been a fun read for me at that age. I would quibble a bit with giving this book to a 7-year old (we're talking second grade here, folks). I can't think of any second graders I know who are worrying about pimples, comparing themselves to the models in Seventeen magazine or wishing they could shave their legs and get tattoos. But give it a year or two and I think the book hits the mark for 9-12 year-olds.

Author Nancy Rue has designed this book with informative chapters on various themes of personal hygiene which range from body-care facts and how-to's to Bible-based pep-talks for those lacking in confidence. Each chapter is interspersed with workbook-type features which provide fill-in-the-blanks, little quizzes, and opportunities to journal. While this is certainly a book you could give to an individual pre-teen, I feel the most effective (and fun) way to utilize The Beauty Book would be to build a 10-week girls' group study around it. Each girl could have her own copy of the book to mark up, and a mentor could lead the girls through the scripture basis for each chapter. It would also be super-fun to plan hands-on activities (like a manicure/pedicure day), to put Rue's beauty tips into action.

I was hesitant about the focus on outward beauty that The Beauty Book seemed to espouse at first glance. But I was quickly won over by Rue's emphasis later in the book on the beauty of the inner person being the most attractive quality in God's sight.

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Lily has learned that we should be proud of the gifts God gave us whether it be red hair or large lips. He has made us in his image. He has given us these body to care for. Our bodies are temples of God.

The Lily series for girls 7-11 years old is not only inspiring but pure fun. This Beauty Book is a great addition to the series. It is somewhat of a activity workbook. A companion journal would be good with this book. I raised four daughters and this would be a fun book to share with girlfriends asking each other the questions from the book. They can experiment with some of the activities like styling their hair and giving each other manicures and pedicures. This book will also help girls build there self-esteem and teach them proper hygiene.

I recommend this book for young girls.

This non-fiction book discusses beauty inside and out. This book gives simple, honest advice to young girls and teaches them how to accept and love themselves just the way they are.

Scripture quotations are frequently used throughout the book to re-enforce the messages illustrated by the author and the fun magazine style quizzes are prefect for getting the point across.

Although the idea behind this book is great and I liked the positive message it carried I'm not sure the layout would be appealing to younger girls. The girly illustrations dotted throughout help but otherwise I can't see it holding the attention of it's target age group which is a shame as the contents is good.

A different book to what I was expecting but one that carries a good, positive message for young girls.

I love this book, I think this is the perfect book for a pre-teen girl. It gives young girls simple and good advice on how to take care of themselves. This book stresses how important it is to be happy and content with who you are and what you do have. Not to see other girls and compare yourself to them and only to see how the other girl is better than you are. It plainly tells girls not to get caught up in the comparison game, since after all we are all different. You get information and advise on how to take care of your hair, your skin, hands and feet. There is even information on shaving, and of couse clothing. Another chapter deals with treating you body like a temple and things that you should avoid all together, or at least wait till you are older. Tips on dealing with glasses, and braces are also dealt with.

If you like the Lily series books than this is a book you will enjoy.
