This is a very good book for those wanting to work in experimental Atomic Physics. It doesn't spend a lot of space with derivations for in-depth explanations. It goes straight to what one will need to know. It is on the other hand, a little dated, being written in the late 70's.
The book is focused on atomic physics, with several winks to the development of the subject through multiple references to the late 20's to the mid 40's. The references, I believe, are due to the principal author, Hans Bethe. Hans Bethe was a key player in the German development of Quantum Theory in the 30's. He came to the US, escaping Germany. near the end to the 30's.
I had actually bought it back in the mid-80's, making it about 1/3 the way through. I just now picked it up and read the whole book.
