Interesting to read some of the leading poetry of the 1950s and early 1960s, but not as enjoyable as I might have wished. I find what has been published these past 25 years to be more entertaining, enlightening, and less strained. I recall one definition I was provided in the 1970s that poetry was "heightened language," and this text illustrates that. I could feel the strain as these fifteen poets lifted their lyrics up like Olympic weight lifters pushing their weighted bars above their heads.
