De Efteling: kroniek van een sprookje
Op de schouders van Anton Pieck heeft Doornroosje haar hoofd neergevlijd. Ze zijn in de jaren vijftig van de twintigste eeuw op weg naar een avontuur dat Efteling heet. Zowel Pieck als zijn reisgenote kunnen dan niet bevroeden hoeveel wonderbaarlijke toekomstmuziek er in het park zit.
Het Sprookjesbos, waar Doornroosje zich te ruste legt, gaat op 31 mei 1952 open. De Efteling telt dan tien sprookjes, omgeven door sportvelden, een speeltuin, waterpartijen en heel veel natuur. In de jaren die volgen zijn het vooral de verenigde krachten van bevlogen mensen die de magie van de Efteling vormgeven en in een halve eeuw uitbouwen tot een feeëriek hoofdstuk in de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse toerisme. Deze Kroniek werd uitgegeven ter ere van het 50-jarig bestaan van De Efteling in 2002. Per jaar wordt uiteengezet hoe de directievergaderingen zijn gelopen, waar men tegenaan liep en wat de uitbreidingen in het betreffende jaar zijn geweest.
Ook leuk zijn de anekdotes die de werknemers weten te vertellen uit hun Eftelingtijd. De illustraties en foto's die de jaren ondersteunen zijn erg fraai.

Een prachtig chronologisch overzicht. Terecht een bemind boek door liefhebbers van de Efteling

De Efteling kroniek van een sprookje is a book intended to display 50 years of the Efteling’s history, and boy does it succeed in this goal. The book’s structure is chronological, starting at the very conception of the amusement park in the period between 1933-1951, right up until the 50-year-jubilee, 2002. Every year or period of years comes with an extensive text detailing every single little thing that happened during that time, all relevant to the Efteling’s history and existence. And every single text comes with wonderful photography, portraits, and illustrations, only to further visualize the information presented. This gives the book a very appealing look, and simply leafing through it without reading too much into the text is also rewarding thanks to the beauty of the photography and illustrations.
The book also provides us with profiles on key figures in the Efteling’s history, such as the ones who thought it all up and made it possible back in 1952 (Van der Heijden and Reijnders), and of course the man who gave the Efteling the stylistic appearance and feel it is so famous for: Anton Pieck himself. There are more key figures, of course, such as designers, former managers, etc., who all provide the reader with their Efteling experiences via a number of interviews usually riddled with amusing and humorous anecdotes, which are a true joy to read. And next to all of this is also a huge number of interesting trivia, often presented in its own little frameworks inside the informative texts.
As I said before, the visual factor of this book is just amazing. There isn’t a page without a photograph or an illustration, and there are also a few portfolios to be found within this book. One contains a whole array of Anton Pieck’s famous illustrations and designs of rides to be found in the park, and another visual imagery in the same vein, but of Ton van de Ven, the man who’s considered to be Pieck’s successor. There’s also a small scrapbook, containing old newspaper articles, photos, old advertisements, stickers, and many other tiny historical items that just fill your heart with nostalgia and glee.
In short, this is a practically perfect book on Efteling history, but it provides the reader with much more than just an informative text, showing many different perspectives on the Efteling via trivia, interviews, and visual imagery.
I would most certainly recommend this book for fans of the Efteling, as it provides extensive details on the amusement park’s history, holds an amazing amount of interesting interviews with (key) staff members, and is filled to the brim with stunning photography, illustrations by Anton Pieck and Ton van de Ven, and other delightful visuals. Other than that, thanks to its structure and the informative nature of the text, it can also be used as a book of reference on Efteling history for those who are interested.

Dit boek doet zijn naam helaas eer aan; het woord "kroniek" doet mij althans in eerste instantie denken aan een saaie, chronologische opsomming. En hoe interessant ik de geschiedenis van de Efteling ook vind, dit boek is gewoon niet goed geschreven/geredigeerd. Veel droge tekst over bestuursvergaderingen. De vele foto's en tekeningen zijn wél de moeite waard, en de persoonsportretten en de anekdotes in kaders zijn ook leuk om te lezen, alhoewel ook die hier en daar betere redactie hadden kunnen gebruiken. Dat dit soort boeken een stuk leuker en leesbaarder geschreven kunnen worden, bewijzen verschillende titels die ik over de geschiedenis van Disney heb gelezen. Eindoordeel: 2,5 ster. Ik ben blij dat ik het uiteindelijk uitgelezen heb, maar het blijft niet in mijn kast staan.

If you're a theme park nerd, the Efteling in the Netherlands looms large as one of the best to ever do it.
This book maybe is a little too inside baseball (quite a few employees seem to be credited for editorial work) to be really thought provoking or critical - in fact, it gets a little sycophantic at times - but I'm enough of an Efteling simp to be delighted at the concept drawings and behind-the-scenes looks it offers.
It's a lovely book, but tbh nothing you couldn't get from a fan wiki. If you're the type of person who likes showcasing physical media, however, by all means!

Een tikkeltje te veel nadruk op het administratieve beleid van de Efteling en bitter weinig over de attracties (tot standkoming, anekdotes, etc). Ook veel stukken die zich herhalen. Een heruitgave in 2027 dringt zich op 👍

Waanzinnig goed boek als je geïnteresseerd bent in de geschiedenis van de Efteling. Bomvol leuke feitjes, weetjes en interviews met (oud)Eftelingers. Een mustread voor iedere fan.

A very good and expansive look at the Efteling theme park in the Netherlands, covering pretty much the entire history of the park, its staff and its rise up until the book was published (the early 2000s). Love the in-depth information and interviews. It can be a tad dry at times but the rest more than makes up for it. Also contains a multitude of beautiful photographs and artworks.

Dit boek is geschreven voor het 50 jarig bestaan van de Efteling. Het laat zien wat er sinds 1950 allemaal gebeurd is en welke mensen er zo belangrijk voor de Efteling zijn geweest. Erg leuk om te lezen hoe zo'n schitterend park is ontstaan en nog steeds bloeit.
