It was written in the 1970s. Today, nearly 50 years after its debut and its winning the 1974 Tony for Best Play, it's still dramatically incendiary. A work of both poetry and pain, the sonnet at the play's heart is a powerful summation of the African American experience.

I bet I would have enjoyed this play more if I better understood black culture (especially that of '70s Harlem) and liked excessive cursing. Walker does a good job making you wonder what happens next though, so I'll give him that.

this is a good play but the real star is the previous owner's marginalia. TALK JIVE. EBONICS. IMPORTANT. next to nothing that had anything to do with talking or jive or importance
