Cast a Giant Shadow (World's Tallest Woman Sandy Allen) by John Kleiman is an interesting book of Sandy's many challenges she faces daily and has throughout her life. It is amazing all the hurdles she had to face. Pictures in the back of book!
My husband and I were truck drivers in 1985 and were visiting Niagara Falls during a layover. We decided to take in the museum at which Sandy was "on display" and entertaining visitors. We waited a long time to talk to her and by the time I reached her podium, it was already past her quitting time. I said we would come back early in the morning. Sandy wouldn't hear of it. She said we had waited a long time and she could tell I was tired and hurting. I told her how pleased I was to meet her. I have great respect for this beautiful lady. She is in so much pain and tolerates so much cruelty and yet never lashes out at the "mean girls" who are so nasty to her and around her.
We talked about my own situation. Of course she made it about me. So sweet and thoughtful. She asked how I did such strenuous and heavy work with my arthritis. I told that I just keep going until I can't. I asked her that with all of her pain and multiple surgeries, how does she deal with it. She said, I just keep going until I can't. Then they fix what's broken and I go on again.
Sandy is remarkably kind, sweet, level-headed, gentle, and thoughtful of others. She impresses me more than any famous movie or tv star ever. The word that most comes to mind is "remarkable". John Kleiman captured her to a T. He discussed the hard things she didn't want to discuss herself and shined a light on this remarkable woman in a kind, honest, and loving way. Thank you John for rounding out Sandy's remarkable story, and thank you Sandy for allowing him to turn on the light. God bless you both.
Sandy Allen was the world's tallest woman at 7'7. I feel like this book was I intended to show her in a positive light, and she truly seemed like a sweetheart of a woman, but I came away feeling very sad for her experiences. Abandoned by her mother, she was raised in near abject poverty by her beloved grandmother. She was over 6 feet tall in the 5th grade and the few pictures included in the book show her extreme height. She was a pretty girl but as she got older, the physical manifestations associated with gigantism transformed her. She suffered from periodic bouts of severe depression, migraines and loneliness. I can only imagine how the trials of her size affected her. Sandy died several years ago and I can only hope she is no longer in pain. 3 stars
The challenges Sandy Allen overcame are truly awe inspiring. Her medical condition brought into focus her physical and emotional needs and how some people can look beyond the person and see the heart. People who don't understand are the most cruel and hopefully Sandy's journey will create tolerance.

A story we all can relate to on some level, the life journey of a 'misfit', I use that term loosely since we are all 'misfits' by societal standards. Sandy Allen's comes terms with herself, a story of self-acceptance, of teaching others, of trying to fit in, of overcoming obstacles.
