When war breaks out in 1939, Sally Kennedy and Tessa Kilbride have already enjoyed several years of close friendship. Although superficially very different - Tessa is married to glamorous film star Sebastian while Sally's husband Nick is his accountant - they feel as close as sisters. Warm-hearted Tessa is content to be a home maker, but Sally yearns for more. With war comes change - by 1940 both Nick and Sebastian have volunteered for the armed forces and Sally has landed a job translating foreign radio broadcasts.
