Was für eine anfänglich illustre Verserzählung, die von der Überheblichkeit eines einfachen Bauernjungen namens Helmbrecht mit wunderhübscher Haube/Kappe, die sogar den trojanischen Krieg abgebildet zeigt, erzählt. Dieser entsagt sich in einem längeren Dialog von seinen Eltern, er lässt sich aber trotz der prophetischen Träume seines Vaters [die davon erzählen, dass ihm das Augenlicht und jeweils eine Hand und ein Fuß abhanden kommen werden, wenn er sich zum Ritter aufschwingt] nicht zuhaus festhalten und bestreitet sein Leben als Raubritter. Er lernt von seinen namentlich recht amüsant gestalteten Raubgesellen vielerlei Untaten, schreckt vor Mord und Vergewaltigung nicht zurück und muss letztlich ein trostloses Schicksal erleiden.
Sich über den eigenen (Bauern-)Stand hinausheben zu wollen, stellte im Mittelalter im Übrigen noch eine der größten Sünden dar.
Sehr einfach lesbar in einfach gereimter/mhd. Versform.
Die Übersetzung ist teilweise etwas 'weit' und ausführlicher als das Original.
Da Mären im Mittelalter für ihre Derbheit und Brutalität bekannt sind, sollte man sich hier auf einiges gefasst machen.

Epic poems fascinate me as a genre. For some reason modern Anglo Saxon and continental societies do not produce them anymore, which makes me sad.
Pearls such as Beowulf and the Dream of the Rood come to mind as I fondly think of the Anglo Saxon tradition, and the Arthurian tradition has produced some fine works in Middle Dutch. The joy of seeing a story unfold before your eyes in rolling meter is just something that prose does not manage to do that often.
Helmbrecht was a joy to read. The poem is crafted expertly, with the dialogues between father and son as an absolute highlight. Quite a number of stanzas a perfectly iambic, which is, well, magical, and added to the cadence of the story. Stylistically, the author of the poems makes excellent use of word play, as well as foreshadowing. Knowing what is ahead, makes you misinterpret what is actually coming, but it also gives a gratifying feeling when the thing is actually happening.

Two notes on the Reclam edition.
First, the nachwort did much to illuminate stylistic, but more importantly, the historical context of the poem. Reading about both contexts made appreciate the poem to a greater extent.
Second, the Neuhochdeutsch translation does a lot in terms of telling the story, but does not rhyme, which makes it not as interesting. On the other hand, it did stimulate me to reread large parts of the Mittelhochdeutsch text.
