Robert Vavra and Fleur Cowles have put out THE most beautiful and magical books I have ever laid my eyes on. I am so glad I still have my hardback copy from when I was a kid - though a page or two torn.
From the preface; "The child's world is the poet's world...."
What if perspective is shifted? What if everything that is meant to be big is now small, and vice versa? What if the king of the jungle no longer had to uphold that reputation? What if butterflies grew large enough that their wings could be useful?
Gorgeous, amazing art by Fleur Cowles. I definitely want to see more.
Read the scanned archive copy on openlibrary, but would love to see it in paper (or own it in paper, and frame the pages).
Here’s an excerpt from the preface to this picture book written by violinist Yehudi Menuhin: “The child's world is the poet's world where dimensions differ only according to feeling, not fact, that place of the fourth dimension that eludes all but painters, poets, lunatics and the players of musical instruments. And it even eludes those at times. That is why they remain children, eternally commited to chasing after it, clinging to the tatters of those clouds of glory with which we are all born and which only rationalisation can rip off.”
I say remain a child and open some picture books like this one for inspiration. You can find them at thrift stores and used book shops. This one has delightful paintings by Fleur Cowles.
My sister was given this when we were children & we didn't particularly care for it but it is better coming across it as an adult when you can appreciate the lovely paintings Vavra picked to build his story around
Frankly, I really don’t think I would have cared for this book as a child. I disliked it intensely when the accessories for my doll house were the wrong proportions. Excellent example of marketing though….
If I ever write a children's book, I want it to be like this one! What beautiful illustrations. A message about being happy living simply, peacefully, and lovingly that toes the line of being hippie fluff and misses it by a hair.
A sweet and touching tale with absolutely beautiful illustrations. Is a companion book to Lion & Blue, one of my all time favorites. This is a story that transcends age; it's a magical adventure about Tiger Flower, King of the Grass. Was a Christmas gift I'd forgotten about.
A peace-loving sixties kind of tale about a tiny tiger. I would say that it's one long poem spliced to accommodate incredible paintings by Fleur Cowles.
