Pearl, Pearl, Pearl … what a mess you’ve gotten yourself into!

Pearl Blackwood is a server at a swanky restaurant called Sky when she’s chewed out by her boss in front of the customers one evening. One of those customers, Christopher, takes an interest in her poor treatment and makes sure her boss publicly apologizes to her for it.

Sounds like her knight in shining armor, huh? Well … not so much. This enigmatic stranger will woo Pearl’s heart, but at what cost?

Once again, Faith Gardner has put the reader in the world of Jolvix, a futuristic tech company, though it plays only a minor role here. Christopher is employed by them, though his exact role is unclear. His stories don’t always line up, you see. We do know that he understands how to create “deepfakes”: AI-created videos so real that it’s difficult for the untrained eye to know when they’re fake. Unfortunately, he’s also a psychopath, so his idea of fair play when using them is not necessarily yours and mine.

As Pearl gets deeper into her relationship with Christopher and new factors come into play, the game they’re playing with each other gets more and more dangerous … for them and everyone else.

I’ll say this: I loved this story, but Pearl’s decision-making processes made me a bit crazy! I mean, c’mon girl: Christopher had so many red flags around him that I’m surprised he wasn’t being chased by angry bulls the whole story! Prudence wasn’t her strong point.

All things said, this is another fantastic entry into the Jolvix series. These stories are standalones within the same universe, so there’s no need to read them in any particular order. I can’t wait to see what Gardner comes up with next!

So apparently Faith Gardner is the Black Mirror of techy psychological thrillers! 😍
This book was so unique. I really don’t think I’ve read anything quite like it.
The antagonist in this book is so despicable that I had to keep reminding myself. It’s just a book. It isn’t real…🤣
There were many times I wondered how Pearl was going to get herself out of the horrible predicaments she found herself in. I really enjoyed the bouts of humor in this as well. (Oh, Wendell….)
Does Pearl get herself in deep? You better believe it.
A cool, tech-forward story with a cynical twist at the end! I have Amen, Maxine on my TBR but now I’ll definitely be prioritizing that one higher on my list! I can’t wait to read more from Gardner!
A big thank you to Mirror House Press as well as NetGalley for a complimentary advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This book will be released on February 23, 2023.

Review for Pearl In Deep:

Pearl Blackwood, a waitress in a fine dining restaurant falls hard for the charismatic Christopher McKinney, employed in the Alternative Reality sector at Jolvix – simply put, he is an expert in deepfake technology. But as she gets to know him better, certain behaviors do raise her suspicions, making her more than a little uncomfortable. Eventually, he proudly declares that he is a “psychopath” and according to him all psychopaths need not necessarily be criminals.

“They paint this picture of the psychopath like every one of us is a deranged serial killer—but most are just ordinary guys like me. Nothing to be scared of. Just a brain that works differently than others. It’s like depression or anxiety or anything else.”

Pearl finds herself inexorably drawn to him and despite her misgivings, she embarks on a relationship with him, moving in with him with her daughter also partnering with him on a business venture (a dream of hers he is helping come true!). Now, what could go wrong? Lies, obsession, mind games and manipulation and much more than Pearl could have ever imagined. She needs to get out with her daughter but at what cost? Knowing Christopher, he isn’t going to make it easy.

Absorbing atmospheric narratives, crisp writing and surprise twists are what we have come to expect from Faith Gardner and with Pearl in Deep she does not disappoint. Though Amen Maxine remains my favorite (closely followed by What January Remembers), Pearl in Deep is an impressive addition to Faith Gardner’s fascinating Jolvix Episodes series. Though the setting of her stories are futuristic (I’m still in the market for a flying feather duster!), her themes are relatable and relevant in that she addresses issues related to how our dependence on technology can be used against us. Pearl’s choices are questionable and at times I wanted to shake her. But you can’t help but sympathize with her and fear for her as she tries to save herself and her daughter. Christopher really creeped me out and his deepfake antics were scary, to say the least, and a bit too real. Gardner really knows how to craft a gripping tale! What draws me to her work is her perfect combination of sci-fi and futuristic elements, which never get too overwhelming and psychological tension which makes for a gripping read every time. I can’t wait to read more of her work in the future.

Many thanks to Faith Gardner, Mirror House Press and NetGalley for the much-appreciated digital ARC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. This book is due to be released on February 23, 2023.

Pearl in Deep (Jolvix episode #4)
NOW AVAILABLE !

Pearl Blackwood is a waitress in the San Francisco restaurant SKY, who has just been publicly berated by her boss, when she meets the charming and sophisticated Christopher McKinney in the DOWN elevator.

He offers her a sympathetic ear, and then, unbeknownst to her, intervenes with her boss, on her behalf, demanding that he also PUBLICLY apologize to her.

Pretty easy to fall for a guy like that!

The first red flag 🚩 appears when after their first dinner date, Pearl thinks she has been ghosted.

The second red flag 🚩 when she learns that he is an expert in “Deepfake” technology for Jolvix. Deepfake technology has made video testimony unreliable, as anything you see may have been professionally altered.

A few more red flags 🚩 are waving when she brings him home to meet her mother…

AND, then he admits to her that he is a PSYCHOPATH.

But, by now-PEARL IS IN TOO DEEP!

Is is possible for a psychopath to truly “love” someone?

Is it possible to survive being “loved” by a psychopath?

This is the fourth in the Jolvix episodes: stand-alone psychological thrillers which can be read in any order but take place in the near future, a future where a company called Jolvix is leading the World in new technology.

Although there were references to Droidburgers 🍔 and rogue companion Bots, this book felt to me like it was in a Jolvix “near future” prior to Maxines.

It was a little bit less SCI-FI and a little bit MORE psychological thriller, than the others.

A bit more OBSESSION and less POSSESSION.

I am still partial to “Amen Maxine” and “What January Remembers” which is funny, because I have no desire to even own an “ALEXA” but, no doubt, Faith Gardner CAN WRITE!

I read this ENTERTAINING “GEM” in one sitting!

You can pick up your copy now!

Thank You to INDIE AUTHOR Faith Gardner for inviting me to read a VERY EARLY copy! It was my pleasure to offer a candid review!

Faith Gardner does it again!!!

I'll be honest and tell you that I get so excited whenever a new Jolvix book is released and because Faith Gardner is a writing machine that's usually every couple of months. Seriously, I have no idea how she cranks these books out so quickly but I'm not here to question it, I'm here to be entertained which she never fails to do.

Pearl Blackwood is a waitress at a fine dining restaurant. One day her boss berates her in front of the entire restaurant causing her to flee in tears. On the elevator a handsome man joins her and he asks what's happened. She tells him about her jerk of a boss and they part ways. The next day when she returns to work her co-worker tells her that a man came in and told off her boss demanding that he publicly apologize to the poor waitress he met on the elevator. Pearl can't believe it. This handsome man did all this for her. He returns to make sure her boss kept his word and that was it, she was in love with Christopher McKinney, for better or worse.

She had no idea how much worse it would get because Christopher is an admitted psychopath.

I had so much fun reading this one. A very gripping story that had the perfect amount of humor to keep it light and fun. There was one scene with Pearl, her four year old daughters doll, a pair of scissors, and a very distraught daughter looking on that had me chuckling away.

"Tallulah's scrunched brow tells me she may be four years old, but even she has enough sense to tell that I'm full of shit. Yeah, no doubt about it, she'll be recounting this for her therapist one day."

Christopher was the perfect charming creep. I kept flipping those pages to see what he would do next. His knowledge of deepfake technology working at Jolvix is a perfect fit for a supposed psychopath.

Oh yeah, and a nifty little twist at the end.

Is Pearl in too deep? Can she escape the clutches of a psychopath? You'll have to read this to find out!

If you like some laughter with your thrills and chills then this is the perfect series for you. Even better, they can all be read as a standalone. Fun, clever, and humorous, what more can a reader ask for? 4 stars!

Thank you to NetGalley and Mirror House Press for my complimentary copy.

This is the latest addition to the Jolvix series. Light sci-fi thrillers. Each read stands strongly on its own, so feel free to dive in anywhere. But I do suggest reading the entire series!

Pearl is waitressing at an upscale restaurant. A job that won’t cover her bills. Though dreaming of a restaurant of her own one day, she’s realistic enough to admit the chances are slim to none. That is until the man of her dreams walks in.

But what happens when your biggest dreams turn into your worst nightmare!?

Faith Gardner writes an addictive, thrilling read that was hard to put down. The tie-in to Jolvix was a disturbing concept I hope never sees the light of day (and that’s all I’ll say about that!)🤐. But overall this book comes across with more of a thriller vibe with just a hint of sci-fi.

Now I’ll be watching for the the next release Eve in Overdrive from this talented author. Seriously…I’ll be reading anything she puts out!

So, the bad news is that I didn't care for this installment of the Jolvix Episodes. These are a loosely related series of light sci-fi books set in the near future. The books in the series deal with technology and how it can be both good and not-so-good depending on which side you're on.

This book centers around Pearl, a server in a restaurant who has aspirations to own her own place someday. After getting chewed out by her boss, a man comes to her rescue and he and Pearl hit it off. Pearl falls for Christopher because he is brilliant, charming, and knows just the right things to say and do. All is going well until Pearl discovers that Christopher is a psychopath. She tries to walk away. Tries to move away, but he always seems to find her and find a way into her life.

I could not connect with Pearl at all, I couldn't figure out what the draw to Christopher was and why she kept believing him even though he was obviously lying to her. I really don't like doormat characters, and she is one for most of the book. Even when I thought that she had finally wiggled out from under his clutches it just never worked. I get that this is supposed to explore the dark side and all of the facets of what is real and what is not, but ultimately it fell flat for me.

I also did not care for the anti-climactic ending. Count me as a resident on outlier island for this book, because I know that so many people really loved it. It just didn't connect with me the way the other installments in the series have. I will still continue to read other books by this wonderful author, but this one just was not for me.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Faith Gardner, you can do no wrong! Her books, if you haven't read them, will blow you away with the creativity and futuristic display of how knowledge in technological format can be a dangerous psychotic path. Sometimes the lines of reality and fantasy blur, but that's what makes me come back to see how she will outdo the last one. This is a fourth in the Jolvix series and I'm sure she is not done yet.

When Pearl is a waitress in a San Francisco restaurant, she is berated in front of the other employees and customers. Smooth to the core, Christopher, with all his impressive charm steps into rescuing her. After he threatens her boss, she gets an apology. She is swept off her feet.
His sophistication soon turns to uncanny behavior, but is not on full display until she takes him to meet her mother. By then, it's too late she looks past his manipulation, lies, and his confession that he is a psychopath. She takes it lightly at first and ponders it until she runs for safety.

When she finds out she is pregnant, she reels a wealthy older guy she dated before and he pays the child support. She can't get away from Christopher at this point because he works for a Deepfake technology company that intercepts everything she does. She is led into his scams and takes part until she is in too deep. She tries to get away from him by moving across the country with her daughter, but he always finds her. She is manipulative and his mind games begin to bleed into her daughter's mind and other people he instigates against her.
Another creepy and psychotic journey with this author. I can't do it enough justice. I will say Amen Maxine is still my favorite, but it is hard to choose because they are all outstanding!

Pearl Blackwood is waiting tables at a restaurant in San Francisco when Christopher McKinney comes to her defense when her employer berates her in front of the entire restaurant. He makes sure she gets an apology the next day. Christopher also makes sure to wine and dine Pearl. He is smooth, intelligent, a cook and a psychopath! Self-diagnosed psychopath but still. Pearl thinks he is right up her alley until he isn't. Christopher works for Jolvix and can track her anywhere so getting away from him won’t be easy.

Both characters were interesting, and I was keeping my fingers crossed for Pearl the entire way. Rooting for her and shaking my head at her, questioning her choice in men, etc. It was fun reading about both Pearl and Christopher and seeing them interact.

Woohoo! Faith Gardner is on a roll with her Jolvix series. Her creative mind must be on overdrive as she is putting these books out so fast that I'm about to get whiplash. Plus, they are so fantastic-. I can't get enough. If you have not jumped on the Faith Gardner bandwagon, hop on board because she writes gripping, twisty, intelligent, hard to put down books. Her storylines are clever, well thought out and keep me on my toes. Although this book is part of the Jolvix series, like the other books in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone.

Pearl in Deep did not disappoint! She set the bar with Amen Maxine and I became an instant fan. I can't wait for the next book in the series!!!!!

Gripping, shocking, well thought out, and hard to put down, Pearl in Deep is not to be missed.

I want to start by saying how much I admire Faith Gardner's hustle and writing chops. She is crushing it. I have no idea how she is getting books out so fast. SHE'S. A. MACHINE.

BUT for the first time, I did not enjoy this trip into the Jolvix universe.

Pearl falls head over heels for the charismatic Christopher. Only to find out later that he's a proud, outspoken psychopath who is skilled in creating deepfake videos.

I could not connect with Pearl at all. I did not understand her attraction to Christopher, I had no sympathy for the situations she put herself into, and did not care what happened to her. Christopher was not the mysterious, captivating psychopath we come across in our thrillers (Tess Stimson's The New House comes to mind). I found him more annoying than frightening. And the whole Psychopaths Are People movement thing was corny as hell.

The deepfake video angle was under-utilized too IMO.

There was a neat little twist at the end I didn't see coming, but it wasn't enough for me. Again, I love this series, but Pearl was a big miss. Many other reviewers love it, so I still encourage anyone who likes the Jolvix series to read this.

What do you do if you find your partner is a psychopath? Meet Pearl and Christopher, one being a psychopath!! Sounds great right? I thought so!

This started out so well as we delved into their relationship and job ventures. I really enjoyed the first third of book to see how it all unraveled. The chemistry was there and I liked the few nods to previous novels. Then second third happened and it unraveled in a way that seemed redundant and had no suspense and the unraveling kind of stopped. It got long winded and Pearl....sigh...Pearl. She just made so many bad decisions. As an example, she needed money but just wouldn't try and get a job and then spend money recklessly while awaiting a paycheck from Henrick which didn't sit well with me

What I liked was the few Easter Eggs to previous novels, love those. As mentioned above I liked the first third a ton. I also liked the final piece with Stormi - that came out of nowhere What I didn't like is after that first bit it fell flat. It turned into more of the usual domestic thriller without the sci-fi element that really makes these novels work.

If I had to rate this one it falls to the bottom of the series. Loved 'Amen Maxine" and "What January Remembers". This just fell a bit short but with that said I'm still all in on this series.

Thank you to Netgalley, publisher and author for my advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Faith Gardner’s newest book is a rollercoaster ride! I loved all her previous books and am so happy that I can say I loved this one as well. It made references to Jolvix and the robots from previous books but took a different direction. Christopher was the perfect character you love to hate and Pearl wasn’t taking anything he was dishing. You need to pick this up asap!

Pearl is a waitress struggling to make ends meat when she meets Christopher. He’s handsome, charming, has a great job in tech and is the first person to really see Pearl. He seems to good to be true. In fact he is, he’s a psychopath. Pearl thinks she can move past it but one incident after the next proves too much. When she finds out she’s pregnant she decides she needs to get out. She moves to a new city, with a new look and a new identity. Even that is not enough to distance herself from Christopher and when her daughter starts displaying disturbing behavior Pearl begins to wonder if she will ever escape Christopher.

Thank you Faith Gardner for this gifted arc in exchange for my honest review.

My rating 1⭐️ ticked no boxes for me - really fell flat!!

Pearl Blackwood is a waitress at a swanky restaurant in San Francisco with big dreams and no cash. Pearl’s life choices are a little of centre but she is making life work for her. Until one day she meets the charming, gorgeous Christopher McKinney.

Christopher sets his sights on Pearl and she can’t help but melt into his arms, there is the little issue of him being a psychopath… which throws Pearl for a loop. Surely though as their relationship turns into a whirlwind of romance and passion this wont be an issue… right??

Soon everything becomes a mind game with Christopher getting ‘Pearl IN DEEP’ she tries to free herself from his clasp but starts to think she may never truly be free of him…. Unless….

Oh Dear!!! I am sitting WAAAAAAAAAY out to sea on my island for outliers on this one. I think I am the only person who has read this book who did not enjoy it. I will be completely honest I didn’t enjoy any of it. I couldn’t get into the story at all… I disliked Pearl so much that I really just didn’t care what happened with her… and I found the whole thing to be corny and lame and kind of childish.

I get where this one was headed and I think if done differently it would have been a really good read but FOR ME it just didn’t hit the mark. When I was supposed to feel empathy for Pearl I just rolled my eyes, when I was supposed to feel scared for her… again eye rolling. The story was so circular that it barely kept me engaged. I wanted so badly to like it because I have liked a couple of the other Jolvix series but this one absolutely was not it for me.

The technology in this one just felt a bit over done as well… or maybe I was just over it… either way I struggled my way through this one and I am sad about that because I do like this author. I think though I might be done with the Jolvix universe for now because I seem to be living alone out here on my little island of 1 stars… might be time for a break.

I love a book with dark humour that really does interest me but even the jokes just felt over or under done. The psychopath storyline was too forced and almost satirical but it didn’t hit any notes for me either and I can do satirical with the best of them. There was no psychological thrills happening for me… not one time did I feel on the edge of my seat, thrilled or even moved in anyway other than to feel annoyed I still had more to read. Its a really bad sign for me.

Overall - I think I will keep it short because I don’t really have anything to say that would make me recommend this to anyone other than if you like this author and you liked all her others books then definitely give it a go - also look at other people’s review this was clearly a case of - sorry we are breaking up its me and not you… but I gotta be honest and I just did not enjoy my time with this one. I hope other readers have a better experience than me and I am glad to see so many already have.

Pearl is a waitress in a high-end restaurant in San Francisco when she has a chance meeting with Christopher, a handsome and charming stranger who also just happens to be a psychopath.

Pearl in Deep is book 4 in the Jolvix Episodes, but other than the deepfake technology aspect, this one had way less tech and sci-fi vibes and felt more like a straightforward psychological thriller. I love how the books in this series can be read as a standalone and in any order.

How many red flags can someone dismiss. Well, if you're Pearl the answer is a million. To be honest, she drove me a little crazy and had me shaking my head repeatedly. The first half of the book held my interest and had me turning the pages, but then my interest waned in the second half until that interesting little twist at the end. I love Faith Gardner's writing and dark humor. Even though this one is my least favorite in the series so far, I still look forward to her next book. Next up, Eve in Overdrive. 3 stars.

Many thanks to Netgalley, Mirror House Press and Faith Gardner for my eARC.

Pearl is swept off her feet by Christopher and can't helping falling for him. His odd behavior, disappearing for days on end for which he claims has to do with work, and his confession of being a psychopath, lead her to end things between them. But, eventually, she's drawn back in. And this time she's pregnant. Who really is this guy and what are his intentions?

This is a long story that takes place over decades. Christopher totally creeped me out and Pearl was odd in her lifestyle and her life choices.

This was a unique tale that kept me interested and intrigued. I kept wondering what was really going on with Christopher. How his elusive and still mostly mysterious "work" fit into it all. And I kept waiting for Pearl to reach the end of her rope and get the eff out!

Sizzling Starbursts! 😳😯🤯😳🤯

⊰ 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥 𝐈𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐛𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐫 ⊱

Once again Gardner naaaiiilllsss it!! I cannot believe how invested I am in her books & this series! My fluffer are these plots so delish, spine-tingly entangled with intense thrills. I swear I crave these books by Gardner because of the futuristic-realism AI type plots. The fact there's a true-ism to her designs amps up & bursts with heightened intrigue & terrifying knots along the way that leave you absolutely gob-smacked & utterly thrown.
Pearl is at a mediocre point of her life, until in walks in Christopher. Everything that's intense and wonderful and also involved in DeepFake creations with Jolvix. Together they decide to embark on Pearl's dream - opening a restaurant. But there's a slight hitch, as you see Christopher is a psychopath. And as the mind games begin and Pearl needs to protect herself and daughter at any cost from him, reality has never seemed less real. And Christopher will never let her go.
You'll be left to question everything and dear heavens to stars is this like a firework inside a firecracker! Be ready to grip your book like your life depends on it and keep your favourite food indulgence on hand because hot flamin' cheetos!

I think I went in with slightly skewed expectations as this is being compared to Black Mirror and sci-fi/futuristic thrillers - this is more of a straightforward psychological thriller, and while it is fast paced and the twists are well timed, the scifi elements are light and don’t have much of an impact on the story other than our psychopathic antagonist working for an AI company.

Run Pearl! RUNNNNN!

Even though Pearl knew she was with a psycho, and knew she was getting manipulated, and KNEW she needed to leave. She chose otherwise. Pearl was WAY Deep, yo.

This was fun, but laughable at the same time. Found myself shaking my head, rolling my eyes and smiling a lot. The writing was a little corny, but held my attention, and the short chaps kept it moving along swiftly.

Good popcorn thriller/palette cleanser type.

Im a little late with the review, but thanks to Mirror House Press and NetGalley for the free digital copy in exchange for my thoughts.

✨ "I've fallen off the deep end, but he was the one who pushed me.

The talented Faith Gardner delivers yet another propulsive read with Pearl in Deep, the latest standalone novel in The Jolvix Episodes. I love this series and have devoured each one religiously, so you can bet that I was excited to start this!

Compared to its predecessors, I feel like this book is less heavy on the futuristic element and more of a regular domestic thriller. Not to say that it isn't well-written. I enjoyed what a breezy and gripping ride it was, but miss the witty social commentary that I've come to associate with Gardner.

Nevertheless, the author has perfectly captured what being in a toxic/abusive relationship is like, why it's so easy to be caught up in one and how hard it can be to break free. I could relate so much to Pearl and what she was feeling, so I never once faulted her for what people might feel like poor decisions. This is what I consider to be the book's strongest aspect and what stuck out to me most.

Oh and the snark lol!!! I love it 😂

✨ "I'm not going to enter into an emotional relationship with someone who has no emotions."

✨ "I'm the grandmother of a love child, minus the love."

Why do I find these so funny? LOL

I also loved the reference to What January Remembers... ahhhh!

Thank you to the author for my digital ARC!

Favourite quotes:

✨ "Somewhere deep inside, I know this is wrong, but it's like he's deactivated my emotional alarm system."

✨ "A relationship ending is one thing. But realizing the person you fell in love with is not the person you thought he was — that's what hurt the most. It's bigger than heartbreak, it's grief."

✨ "You're smarter than thinking the world is black and white. It's a full spectrum of color. Well, the truth is like that, too. It's a spectrum. It's a story that changes depending on who's telling it, who they're telling it to, and when, and why."

✨ "I tell people what they want to hear. And you hear what you want to hear. What's the difference?"

✨ "The only way to avoid swimming with sharks is to become one."

Another Jolvix banger. I wish I always had one of these to read! I am obsessed.

Pearl meets the charismatic Christopher after her boss makes a public spectacle out of reprimanding her.

Lifting her spirits, he offers her a new journey in life that she can't resist. There's one big caveat-- he's a psychopath. Not the ghoulish movie kind, the kind that walk amongst us everyday, blending in, never giving us an inkling that they lack the same empathy and emotional capacity the rest of us have.

Some of them lead harmless lives but some.. well, let's just say they don't. Which type is Christopher??

Wow, the concept as psychopaths as being "neurodivergent" is a brilliant idea that could really be tapped into.

This book felt to me like two stories. The "first half" and then the "second half". Unfortunately, I didn't like Pearl (the MC). Doormat characters drive me crazy, and the ending was a bit anti-climactic. It also didn't have much to do with Jolvix, really?

I didn't like this one as much as "Amen, Maxine", but I'm definitely going to read the other books in the 'series'! (Each book is a standalone in the same 'universe', and can be read in any order.)

"I finally meet the love of my life and he turns out to be a psychopath."

Pearl Blackwood is waiting tables in San Francisco when she meets Christopher McKinney, falling for his charm and sophistication right away. She's mesmerized by him, drawn to him with a magnetic pull. He makes her feel special, like anything is possible. Together, they open Sea, an innovative underwater restaurant, and Pearl thinks she's succeeded in reaching her dreams. But nothing is what it seems when it comes to Christopher, promises becoming illusions, and a downward spiral begins.

Christopher works for Jolvix, specializing in deepfake technology, having the ability to create videos of Pearl that use her likeness and voice to say anything he wants her to say. He also initiates a movement claiming psychopaths are marginalized members of society, not evil but simply misunderstood. Pearl has already fallen in love with him but she has flickers of doubt as red flags appear. She tries to resist him but she keeps falling into his spell, conflicted as she's still physically attracted to him but not sure what to believe. She loses the ability to tell the difference between what's real and what's fake. Can she trust him? Can she even trust herself? Entangled in a web of half-truths and lies, she tries to pull away but she can't seem to get out of his grasp. Christopher thrives on mind games and instilling fear and he plays expertly on Pearl's insecurities and vulnerability.

Pearl in Deep is a true psychological thriller with technology featured less heavily than in previous books in the series. It asks the question of whether psychopaths are capable of love since they don't exhibit empathy. This is a story about obsession and control, possession of someone else's thoughts. How do you know what to believe when your thoughts are no longer truly your own? This book also takes a deep look at the nature vs nurture debate in determining the development of psychopathic behavior.

I'm always captivated by Faith Gardner's writing and the creative expanse of her imagination. Any book she writes is guaranteed to be a wild ride! With super short chapters, I was continuously invested in the story, wanting to know what would happen next. I felt a sense of urgency and foreboding as I turned the pages, especially as the risk of danger escalated. It drove me completely insane how Pearl kept coming back to Christopher as she ignored her better instincts. I wanted her to be stronger than that. But then everything changed and I loved when she finally gathered her self-confidence and started fighting back.

"The only way to survive swimming with sharks is to become one."

Surprising twists culminated in a denouement that shocked me and I was left thinking about the power of the mind and wondering how it's possible to ever really know how much control we truly have over our own thoughts. This was such a thought provoking read and I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next.

"In the meeting of a stranger, the stars aligned my sky." (Kismet)

And nothing could be more true. Pearl Blackwood had no idea what that close encounter in an elevator would mean in regard to the rest of her life.

Tears spilling over, Pearl had just been humiliated by her boss after a small mishap in the upscale restaurant where she was part of the wait staff. She had no other recourse but to grab her things and find the exit. Said stranger in that elevator was Christopher McKinney who would send continuous shock waves into Pearl's life that would register off the Richter scale. Again, and again, and again.

Pearl fell hard for the handsome man with the beguiling smile. She would follow him anywhere. Christopher, who worked for Jolvix and was a genius when it came to deepfake technology, would disappear for days on end with always an excuse and a huge bouquet of tulips which were Pearl's favorite. The rest of the world faded with only Christopher in her vision.

Christopher sets Pearl up with a restaurant of her own, Sea, catering to clientele with deep pockets. Pearl helped with the design as she stands in awe of the aquarium walls filled with exotic fish. But Christopher continues to disappear leaving Pearl in a lurch that seems to widen day by day. It is this mysterious behavior that will line this novel to the very end.

Faith Gardner writes like her hair is on fire. She gets deep below the surface of her characters that forms a bond with the readers. You feel the heat of the flames getting closer and closer, and yet, you can't look away. The title is spot-on with Pearl being swallowed up by the waves of her situation. She's lost all sense of herself. Christopher is her moon and her stars. And it's about to get dark, very, very dark.....

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Mirror House Press and to the talented Faith Gardner for the opportunity.

PROS⇩

-Each episode or book in this series is essentially a standalone story and can be read out of order, although, you shouldn’t read The Slaying Game before Eve in Overdrive.
-The plot was unique even if I found it difficult to get on board with some of it.

CONS⇩

-There were some believability issues.
-And damn…I seriously wanted to slap Pearl upside the head for her constant stupidity.

Holy guacamole! This is my favorite Jolvix Episode since Amen Maxine. Pearl Blackwood meets Christopher McKinney and thinks she has found her prince. Soon she realizes he is a psychopath with a talent for deep fake. A diabolical combination that sucks her in like quicksand. These episodes are all standalone, so if you have not yet experienced the Jolvix world, feel free to jump right in with this one. Faith Gardner has a gift for chilling sci-fi that makes you think about all the things that could go wrong with our technological advances. Fun fact: while reading this I had two books in progress with a young girl named Tallulah. What are the odds? The other title is What Have We Done. That one is also shaping up to be a five-star read. Stay tuned.

A big thank you to Mirror House Press and NetGalley for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to the author for letting me get my paws on this one a little early! Peal in Deep is another installment in the Jolvix series. I was first introduced to this series of books through What January Remembers. I read that one around Christmas time and loved it. I was super excited to get into this one.

This was your trusty dusty psychological thriller. It kept me interested from the start, I finished the book in less than a day, if that tells you anything. I'm hoping there is a sequel that involves Pearl and Tallulah (how rare is it to see this name?!). I would love to know what happens next in their story.

Another exciting installment of The Jolvix Episodes! What would you do if you met the man of your dreams and fell in love, only to find he was hiding a dark secret that could change everything? Pearl Blackwood, a waitress struggling to make ends meet, finds herself in chance meeting with a sympathetic, handsome, successful Jolvix employee, Christopher, after being publicly humilated by her boss. What Pearl doesn't realize is this perfect man is anything but. Red flags begin to appear soon after the two begin dating. Christopher then reveals a dangerous truth that will alter Pearl's life in more ways than one. Pearl In Deep is definitely a page turner that will keep you on the edge!

It’s not my favorite of the Jolvik series, primarily because the technology aspect wasn’t at all important and is just really gimmicky. The build up and twists aren’t as good as well.

Simply not the best of an otherwise solid series.

Another crazy psychological thriller from Faith! This one was tense, nerve wracking, anger-inducing, and funny at times. Pearl was such a complex character. At times I felt for her situation and at others I was screaming at her to see the red flags right in front of her face 😂 Was Pearl in too deep? She most definitely was!

Sad that I’ve officially finished the Jolvix series (Yes I read book 4 & 5 before this one)
