Tachibana Higuchi (樋口 橘, HIGUCHI Tachibana), born 1976-03-16 , is a Japanese manga artist. In year 1996, she first made her debut work in Bessatsu Hana to Yume's 5th issue, entitled 5 Gatsu no Sakura (『5月のサクラ』?).
"I first submitted a manga story a while after I graduated from high school. Up until then I was studying for the entrance examinations for the Art University, and as part of that, I sometimes drew manga and four-panel strip comics for fun.
"Because I was conscious of the fact that I had started drawing manga in earnest at a later age, I think my progress during the beginning on drawing and storytelling techniques was fast as I frantically tried to absorb everything I could learn about creating manga. After the serialization of the story began, as I got busy, I was so desperate to submit it on time that I feel that the drawings probably haven’t improved much compared to before. During the serialization of the manga, I think my story telling techniques improved more as I concerned myself with how to catch the attention of the readers, how well one can incorporate what the readers are seeking into the story."
Her current ongoing work is Gakuen Alice. (Wikipedia)
Hey Sarah! An actual physical copy! :P Told you I will request the hell out of the library.
I should've read this a long time ago but yeah...kind of got dragged into more manga/anime stuff with my friends. So where do I begin with the review...
I really liked the manga. The characters seemed interesting...some odd but definitely interesting.
Mikan...well she was really your typical manga type of girl. She was ummm...the happy, bubbly character. But she cried a lot as well. I mean i know her best friend Hotaru kind of abandoned her but still. More on Hotaru later. Mikan of course is very special which didn't appealed to me. -_-
Hotaru was a...well...mysterious character. I don't know what was up with her. She was very "dead" like. She didn't really show much emotions. She was indeed an interesting one...very intriguing.
Oh god Narumi sensei. O_O Yeah, this was a weird manga... He was...weird. But I love him. Really, I do. (In fact I love all the teachers because they are so mysterious.)
Natsume was your typical bad boy with a background. I don't really know how I feel about him. Some of the things he did was...(this review is really not turning out well) "interesting"...*cough cough* the panties thing.
Luca was adorable. I mean he and Natsume...GAYYYYY (well probably not...but desperately hoping they are.
My favourite quote from this volume is... "If you don't smile, then I won't either. I don't want to be happy, if you're still in agony." (Luca to Natsume) GAAAYYY! (Really I am hoping they are gay)
Okay, I think I will definitely read on. I mean it is a pretty interesting (yes I said it again) manga.
“The tender friendships one gives up, on parting, leave their bite on the heart, but also a curious feeling of a treasure somewhere buried.” -Antoine de Saint Exupéry
Mikan Sakura is just every other normal girl. Her best friend Hotaru is however a prodigy and is transferred to a prestigious academy far away from her. Sakura couldn't bear this seperation and runs off to this school which they call Gakuen Alice(Alice Academy). But what if this school is nothing like she imagined?
This manga took the facade of every other shoujo manga that I've ever read. It started with friendship and a whimsical aura around. But it later shapeshifted into something I don't think I can ever explain. All I could say is that I was constantly in tears yelling that 'this wasn't fair'. But despite that, it held me in its arms as I experience a mixture of emotions. The story came to me unknowingly and just never left 💔
This is my first time rereading it since then. I've read a wide variety of reviews, trying to pass it off as romance or paranormal. I agree that it definitely has those elements but it's impossible to justify this story based on that. It initially read as a fairytale then slowly turning into a dystopian and towards the end it becomes numb and hard to breathe.
I've been rereading a lot of old favourites lately. Go forth and give this a try, dear friends ❤️. Once again... Happy Reading!

What?
While the series doesn't appear to be subverting the mysterious school genre, it at least has some interesting bells and whistles. Worth taking a shot.
Hehe... Oh.. my... God! Tapi menurut tebakanku manga kedua (Kageki no Kuni no Alice) nggak mungkin bisa sesukses Gakuen Alice. Kenapa?
Karena semua seriesnya so damn amazing.
I began this series YEARS AGO, like back when I was in the 7th grade. I always passed the shelf with this series in the library and I never took notice of it until one day when I pulled out volume 2 (yes, I started with volume 2 because I couldn't find volume 1).
And now that I'm reading volume 24, I can easily say . . . I LOVE GAKUEN ALICE!!!! I LOVE this series!! I am madly, passionately, and irrevocably in love with it! Which is why I'm super happy to say that Gakuen Alice is my first 5-star-rated manga on goodreads.
I love the art and plot of Gakuen Alice. The series starts out with a girl named Mikan Sakura who loves her best friend, Hotaru, to death. But when Hotaru decides to be sent to an elite academy where she won't be able to see Mikan, Mikan swipes her grandfather's stash of money and runs to Tokyo where she knows she'll find the academy. When Mikan arrives to the academy, the first person she meets at the academy is Narumi, a teacher that teaches within the academy. He states that only certain children may enter the academy, but he notices something about Mikan that makes her eligible to be accepted in the academy. The academy is called "Alice Academy", an academy for child prodigies with gifts called "Alices", which are supernatural powers. Ever since Mikan gets accepted into the academy, she endures all sorts of adventures.
I classify this series as a comedy, romance, drama, and fantasy. It's one of my absolute favorite manga in the entire universe and I definitely encourage shoujo fans to read it.
Reasons why Theresa gives this series a perfect five-star rating:
1. Believable Character Emotions
I can't spoil any of the romance for you guys, but the romance that does occur in this book wasn't hurried and smooshed into the first few volumes. The two characters (I cannot mention their names, I'm sorry!!) gradually began to grow fond of each other and I sense this as what looks like love. Love isn't smooshed together in the first week of the setting. Love isn't rushed, based purely on looks, and in Gakuen Alice's romances, one loves the other even if they have the biggest flaws. I love Higuchi's romance for Gakuen Alice.
2. Capability to make me smile.
I love anything that makes me smile, let alone laugh and curl into a little ball and roll around in the floor in giggles. Gakuen Alice's art is adorable and the manga overall makes me laugh.
3. Originality.
I can't find another manga or novel or story or plot that's anything like Gakuen Alice. I find stories with the same factors and the same kind of romance and the same kind of comedy, but I never, ever, ever, ever, ever have found a story that was extremely similar to Gakuen Alice. It's truly an original idea. I appriciate originality because, like I say in a lot of my reviews, I'm tired of seeing stories that are like repeats of Twilight. Yes, the irony of a hunter and its prey falling in love with one another makes a good story, but I'm ready for something new. So anyway, basically I just LOVED Gakuen Alice. It's currently on it's 25th volume right now, so it's ending soon.\
Here is another manga that I haven't decided yet if I will continue following. The premise is pretty simple, and pretty familiar. Mikan is trying to get into a special school for Alices, because her best friend Hotaru is going there now. As she discovers, Alices have a magical ability that can be powerful and even destructive. Her Alice is a mystery to her until the end of the volume, but most readers will figure it out very early on. So yes, it is rather like X-Men in some ways, except that the main characters are all very young, elementary age. Mikan herself is usually sweet and cheerful, and I liked her. But I didn't really like any of the other characters. And although I liked some of the more original aspects (one of the other students has an ability to make enchanted toys, and starts with a territorial teddy bear) it's still very familiar over all.
Reread. The art and the worldbuilding in this series are both sketchy. Despite these shortcomings, this story caught me up early on and carried me all the way through the volumes that were translated until Tokyopop stopped its run a little over ten years ago. There's always something new going on, and the characters are fun. A nice, light read with hints of darkness now and then.
I’ve always been careful about what shojo manga I read, because normally (as is the case with this) I slowly begin to hate it. But when I watched the anime for this I was drawn in by the cuteness of these kids and Natsume’s love for Mikan (forgive me if those aren’t their names it’s been a hot minute) and Milan’s gradual love for Natsume. It was all so simple in the anime with a nice climax and a nice ending, so what happened with the manga?
Around the halfway point — the point everyone says is the best point — I gradually started hating Mikan and her infatuation with a mother who not only ABANDONED her with her grandparents, but someone Mikan had never met in her life, and now she’s putting her life on the line for someone who doesn’t love her, basically screwing Natsume and his GENUINE love for her. I felt very disappointed when this happened, but kept going and suffered through ‘till around 10 chapters from the end. Then I was done. I was uninvested in the characters (except Natsume and there was a severe lack of him) and whatever problems were going on in Mikan’s “stupid” life (I wrote a whole paragraph dedicated to cursing this manga) and have never regretted my decision.
Of course, there are better shojo out there, one most resembling this is Shugo Chara. But as a person who rarely reads shojo manga this was a huge disappointment.
This is actually much better than I expected! It's like a cute, shoujo cross between X-men and Hollowfeilds. I have to wonder why they refer to a child's special ability as an "Alice", since that seems like such a random name for it; the only reference I can think of is Alice in Wonderland, falling down the rabbit hole into a place where the rules are upside down and inside out. The cutesy friendship-centered surface of the story belies the depth of the plot. The children are surprisingly violent - the worst sort of bullies, but with superpowers - and the theme of "Alice-supremacy" amongst the students reminded me of the Death Eaters from Harry Potter; it cast a darker dimension over the whole story. I was thrilled at how Mikan stood up to them, and I really enjoy her Alice! I wonder what Natsume's reasons for trying to escape are? There were some hints in Luca's flashback, but only enough to tempt the imagination. I have a feeling that the sinister twists not finished yet when it comes to this series. How exciting!
I kept hearing that this was the "next Fruits Basket" as that's what TP wants you to believe, and though I was dubious I was charmed right away by this first volume. It skews a bit younger than Fruits Basket, by virtue of the fact that it's about elementary school students, but the cute art, silly sense of humor, and magical circumstances do give it a similar appeal to Fruits Basket. I was initially unsure as to whether teens would be put off by the young age of the heroine (she's 10) but I don't think they'll care -- it's such an engaging adventure, and I particularly thin it will be great for younger teens.
One word: AWESOME Gakuen Alice fluently ties together "kid life" and "adult life" perfectly! At first glance you might think that this book is just another silly kid story, but once you get into it there's a good chance you will forever be hooked! This was actually the very first manga that I had ever read and it is still one of THE best ones so far.
Even though I think that ending was kind of rushed, in all, I did enjoy this series so very much. I love Mikan and Natsume and Luka and Hotaru and everyone with all of my heart and soul.

Un enemies to lovers bien desarrollado mientras crecen.
Sayangnya world building-nya nggak pas. Kenapa pemilih alice diperlakukan sebegitunya?
It was okay, but not really my thing. Stories starring school-age children that are ABOUT the school tend to feature a lot of elements that I don't have any patience for anymore; the "something special" about the school, the hierarchy and the resulting cliques, etc. Just, no. Not for me.
Gakuen Alice is such a great manga! After reading "Fruits Basket" barely anything could satisfy my standards but this did. It is my second favorite manga of all time. The characters: Mikan, Natsume, Hotaru, and Ruka, are all so captivating and heartwarming. You come to love them all despite their sillinesses. Mikan can be whiney and dumb, but she's determined, saucy, sweet, and adorably persistent! Natsume first seems...well evil. But come on--you knew Mikan deserved it (well not always) but after her constant complaining it was almost a relief to have a person who set her hair on fire and humiliate her on occasion. Eventually you came to realize what a good person Natsume really is, and you began to sympathize with how many hardships he's experienced. Ruka seemed boring to me at first, and I cared little for him. But his character grows when he interacts with others. His humiliation at Hotaru's blackmail always was a real laugh, and he was so kind, and nice to everyone. Especially to Mikan, who really needed a friend when Natsume was picking on her. Hotaru is...Hotaru. When I first heard of Gakuen Alice I watched the anime, and her blank eyes and short hair made me think she was a boy (only momentarily!) In the manga she is so much more feminine because of her pretty eyes and eyelashes, and her blank eyes do not stay blank for long! You soon realize how intelligent, and spunky she is. Her subtle but deep friendship with Mikan is often hilarious, because Hotaru punnishes and tortures Mikan at times, and is endlessly generous at others. Hotaru is very strong. My favorite traits of her, include her constant greed for money, her animal themed weapons, and her zeal for photographing Ruka during embaressing moments so she can sell them to his fans. And how great the characters are is only half of it. The story line is amazing and captivating and completely unique! I loved this story, and recommend it to all fans of manga.
2nd Read 2017: Wow can't believe this bitch had the emotional stability to embark on this FEEL trip for the second time as if the first one didn't turn her into a complete, incomprehensible mess lmaoooo soooo y'all probably think this is just your typical shoujo/ slice of life, fun and light-hearted manga :) :) :) :) honestly it's just as fun as it sounds (a story about people with special abilities called Alices who go to their special academy, a boarding school fantasy basically), I laughed so much reading this and BOIII were there many tears shed :(( there is more depth to this manga about elementary school children than some of the more grown up stuff I've read honestly. these children and the people around them are all amazing characters I've grown sososo attached to (shoutout to my faves *wink* you know who you are ) my words don't do much justice for Higuchi's finest work so please pick this series up and see for yourself, you WILL be Shook (and no amount of preparation can get y'all ready for what's coming your way, folks)
1st Read 2016: OMG THAT WAS SUCH AN EMOTIONAL TURMOIL. I picked this up for fun??? and this story and its characters now have such a great impact on me tf!! i can't ..words right now i just finished it and i can'tproperly convey anything just know that if you decide to embark on this journey, you're in for some good stuff
I BELIEVE IN LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT! Or first chapter in this case... Maybe this is just a manga thing but I fell in love with EVERY single character I swear. Mikan is my FAVORITE type of character and her bff Hotaru is my favorite type of cold character. She's such a tsundere I swear. (I love those) I also really love the friendship they share. Hotaru has her own ways of expressing her love but Mikan is the type that expresses hers very openly. It's really cute that the whole story started because Mikan was chasing after her FRIEND. I feel like that's so rare in shoujo. To chase after a friend and not a guy... I also totally love the bad boy cliche we have with Natsume who has an incredible "Alice". (Totally give me My Hero Academia vibes) Mikan's Alice just so happens to be nulling and can basically cancel out Natsume's powerful Alice. He's a boy with trauma that one... His bff on the other hand, Luca, is his own type of Tsundere. Only with animals though. He's generally always cold with humans. HOW CAN U LOVE LOVE THEM ALL? I'm hooked. It's only the 1st volume but I'm hooked. I'm so excited.
Llore, reí, me enamore.
Read up to 50 chapters and decided to drop it. Realized it's Shoujo and not meant for me. The Art is Horrible, seems to be just novice sketches - still could have worked if the story and plot were good. In the initial 20 chapters the weird relationship between the characters created good humor. That is the only strong point of the writing. The Story seemed confusing and random. Didn't like any of the main characters, its the side characters which made it a bearable read - Hotaru and the mind reader are the only fun character in this manga.
There's the big issue with it being a romance manga and the character's being in elementary school, but it a old school one, so I get it. I obviously saw the anime years ago, and the weekend I stared reading the manga I watch it again and just wanted to know what the hell happens later on the story, it did not disappoint, it's really funny, suspenseful, with LOTS of drama and a good - proper amount of beautiful moments that give you stomach butterflies. The one thing I did kinda hate/love was the ending, it being a cliffhanger it's not the best, I don't love those type of endings, sometimes I completely loathe them and other I understand them, this one was an understandable one, but it still was disappointing.
Mikan and Natsume are the ultimate couple, EVEN AS KIDS; like what the hell this two elementary kids have had more intensity and a love life than me, a 22 y/o single, never been kissed girl. Ruka-pyun was the best love triangle guy, as always the golden one, him being way too good, the obvious and best choice for Mikan, but there was something about Natsume (him being the bad boy who would do ANYTHING for her, but then again THEY ARE KIDS). Hotaru was the best, she was the funniest one, I had a feeling this was gonna be a Tomoyo-Sakura situation, and it kinda was, her ending was so sad, that's why I don't love this ending, but it was kinda a "happy" ending, Idk.
But no complains, loved this manga, definitively and 100% recommend.
