While this title is marketed as being solely about near death experiences, it is a useful text for anyone who is experiencing a spiritual awakening provoked by any means. It is perhaps particularly useful to those with an agnostic or atheistic background due to its entry-level accessibility and adequate depth. It could help many who are newly initiated in non-ordinary (sic) states of awareness to navigate the often confusing and ethically challenging path of spiritual growth when an expanded awareness and experience of existence erupts quite unexpectedly, as can often happen following near death experiences.
A Farther Shore also does a decent job of collecting data from near-death experiences and attempting to pierce the veil between what we perceive as life and its opposite concept - a realm far beyond the conceptual - that which is beyond the perception of being alive, otherwise known as death.
This is one of the most enlightening books I've read. Yvonne Kason begins the book by describing a near death experience she had as a young doctor when she was transporting a patient from Sioux Lookout in a small plane. The plane crashed into freezing water and the fact that she survived was really a miracle. Her near death experience as a result of the crash led to her work with countless patients who had Spiritually Transformative Experiences STEs, Mystical Experiences, Near-Death Experiences, Psychic Experiences, Spontaneous Inspired Creativity and Spiritual Energy/Kundalini Episodes. There are several stories from her patients throughout the book and what they learned from the experiences. I found the last few chapters especially interesting where she explains the reasons why people develop psychosis or manic episodes as a result of prolonged meditation. She explains, "In North America vast numbers of people are diligently doing the physical postures, the breathing exercises, and/or intensive meditation , but few are making any attempt at doing the groundwork in the moral and psychological observances of yama and niyama." This includes non-violence, truthfulness, not stealing, chastity or moderation and greedlessness. She recommends living a balanced life, and progressing slowly so that your body will not be overwhelmed. Highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in deepening their spiritual practise. It's filled with wisdom Dr. Kason has developed from years of working with patients.
If you have had a mystical/spiritual type experience this book would probably interest you or if you are interested in the subject matter. Kason explains her own mystical experiences as well outlines her 20 or so years of medical practice treating those that had experienced some type of kundalini/spiritual or paranormal experience. Through her own experience and research she developed a methodology to guide her patience through these experiences. A pretty remarkable feat and person, I'd say!
I felt this author to be credible and her conclusions dovetailing quite well with other findings in parapsychology and the effects of these experiences in one's life.
A Farther Shore is a great exposition on spontaneous spiritual awakening, kundalini, and near death experiences. If you're skeptical about the spiritual world, this book can be very convincing.
