Put together by a comics class at the U of, this is a volume I had skipped past a dozen times or more. I picked it up and I guess it's like any other short story collection - thirty or more stories that have very little to do with one another, a hefty mix of good, bad, and indifferent. I think the major problem I really had was that they weren't all spell checked, and there was no index or TOC, so I couldn't really skip around.
"A collection of stories produced by the students of P. Gloeckner's narrative art course at the University of Michigan School of Art & Design."
kevin got me this book for rowdy librarian secret santa. as one might guess with any collection of this ilk, there are good comics, okay comics, and godawful comics. i have always taken it for granted that my favorite graphic novelists (julia wertz, craig thompson, lucy knisely etc) can write as well as draw...or in the case of sara varron, draw so well she doesn't need to write. there was some gorgeous artwork in here where the characters just stood around and mumbled at each other. there was also some pretty good writing with drawings that my eyes literally could not interpret no matter how long i stared at them.
i very much enjoyed the shorts by jessica yurasek, cristina mezuk and jessie howell. well done ladies. draw some more comics.
