「クマだ」、男の口から、低い声がもれた……。村を阿鼻叫喚のどん底に陥れた凶暴な肉食獣!実際の事件を基に、その恐怖を再現する。北海道天塩山麓の開拓村を突然恐怖の渦に巻込んだ一頭の羆の出現!　日本獣害史上最大の惨事は大正4年12月に起った。冬眠の時期を逸した羆が、わずか2日間に6人の男女を殺害したのである。鮮血に染まる雪、羆を潜める闇、人骨を齧る不気味な音……。自然の猛威の前で、なす術のない人間たちと、ただ一人沈着に羆と対決する老練な猟師の姿を浮彫りにする、ドキュメンタリー長編。本文より渡道して以来かれらは、多くの先住者たちから羆(ひぐま)が内地の熊とは異った野生動物であることを知らされていた。内地の熊が最大のものでも三十貫(一一〇キロ余)程度であるのに、羆は百貫を越えるものすらある。また内地の熊が木の実などの植物を常食としているのとは異って、羆は肉食獣でもある。その力はきわめて強大で、牛馬の頸骨を一撃でたたき折り内臓、骨まで食べつくす。むろん人間も、羆にとっては恰好の餌にすぎないという。吉村昭 (1927-2006)東京・日暮里生れ。学習院大学中退。1966(昭和41)年『星への旅』で太宰治賞を受賞。同年発表の『戦艦武蔵』で記録文学に新境地を拓き、同作品や『関東大震災』などにより、1973年菊池寛賞を受賞。以来、現場、証言、史料を周到に取材し、緻密に構成した多彩な記録文学、歴史文学の長編作品を次々に発表した。主な作品に『ふぉん・しいほるとの娘』(吉川英治文学賞)、『冷い夏、熱い夏』(毎日芸術賞)、『破獄』(読売文学賞、芸術選奨文部大臣賞)、『天狗争乱』(大佛次郎賞)等がある。

The life and the atmosphere of a Meiji-era frontier village in Hokkaido and its people are well depicted, but the characters are not well developed and overall quite one-dimensional, almost like cliché.

This non-fiction novel, based on a true story, describes a horrific attack on a pioneer village in Hokkaido. It is a detailed reconstruction of a series of murders by bears that occurred in a village at the foot of Mt. Teshio in the winter of 1915. The highlight of this book is its realistic descriptions. Akira Yoshimura has conducted meticulous interviews and faithfully reconstructed every detail of the case.

What I felt while reading the book was the power of nature and the helplessness of human beings. The people of the pioneer village were trying their best to survive in the harsh environment. However, their daily life is instantly shattered by the appearance of a single brown bear. It highlighted the fragility of human society and made me think about the difficulty of coexisting with nature.
