Six short audiobook adventures featuring The Doctor in many of their various incarnations.

First off we have Adèle Anderson reading Salvage (by Max Curtis), which features The (Eighth) Doctor and Bliss in an adventure that takes them to a train headed for a destination that it never seems to arrive at. An interesting tale, but it didn’t quite grab me (3/5).

Our second tale, AWOL by Angus Dunican and performed by Jon Culshaw, features the Brigadier in Peru searching for The (Third) Doctor after the events of Doctor Who and the Silurians. This isn’t the traditional style of Short Trips, it is instead, presented as a “two-hander” with the enormously talented Culshaw pulling double duty. But what is really remarkable is that this fills in as a bridge between the aforementioned Silurians and the next aired story arc, Doctor Who: The Ambassadors of Death and deals with The Doctor coming to grips with the Brigadier’s slaughter of the Silurian subterranean base. Just wonderful (5/5).

The third story, read by Dan Starkey, in the set is The Three Flames, written by Sophie Iles and features The (Twelfth) Doctor. Nothing spectacular here, pretty straightforward (3/5).

Our next selection features The (Ninth) Doctor and Rose. It’s titled Identity Check by Eugenie Pusenjak and is read by Jacob Dudman, who does an excellent impression of The (Ninth) Doctor. The story itself is interesting, made even more compelling in that it starts out heading in one direction and then winds up somewhere else entirely (4/5).

From the period when The (Tenth) Doctor is traveling alone, we get Table for Two, Dinner for One by Jennah Dean, read by Ayesha Antoine. It’s a fun bit, but nothing too out of the ordinary to make more than a romp (3/5).

Finishing this volume up is The Galois Group by Felicia Barker. It features The (Eleventh) Doctor and Valarie, read by Safiyya Ingar. This one is interesting, but it feels like it’s trying way too hard to be another Vincent and the Doctor (which is probably my single favorite episode). Honestly, nothing can compare (3/5).

Pretty good Short Trips. Music got emotional during the Brigadier one.

The three flames read by Dan Starkey was phenomenal. He impersonates Peter Capaldi in a way I didn't even think was possible. I have always been sad that they haven't been able to bring Peter Capaldi in some capacity (especially big finish!) so this is about as close as you get to having him haha. It took me by surprise, I had to stop and look up who was doing the voice because it was just uncanny. 5/5 just for that.

A decent set, sporting some great stories which really show this range at its best and also some others which show this range at its most average. Salvage, AWOL, Table for Two, Dinner for One and The Galois Group are the highlights; producing really neat tales focusing on specific characters and small concepts perfect for the shorter running time.

Review by Story…

AWOL: Great to have a story that covers why the Doctor went back to work for UNIT after the events of “The Silurians”. I appreciate that the story doesn’t take the easy way out. But I’m frustrated that the Doctor doesn’t challenge Stewart on the so called “bravery” of genocide. 2/5

This was a decent collection of Short Trips. I particularly liked the 8th Doctor story at the beginning with the train saving people, and while I'm not a fan of the 3rd Doctor, I did think that they included a fantastic character piece of the 3rd Doctor and the Brigadier.
