Colorado has bandits, rattlers, and cactus galore... not to mention Jesse and Summer, the town's newest and most hard-headed heroes.
Summer Bennett has been at her aunt’s etiquette school, and now she is ready to start a life as a mail-order bride. After answering the ad for a bride in her hometown, she is eager to get back to her roots and see her family again. But when her stagecoach is attacked and a handsome deputy comes to the rescue, she realizes the man is her childhood tormentor, Jesse Slade. With Jesse in her life again—and engaged to her sister—Summer is determined to stop the wedding while at the same time, planning her own special day. Perhaps tying Jesse to the outhouse might make things easier than having to deal with his desirous looks and warm touches.
This story is part of the Westward Home and Hearts Mail-Order Brides Series and is book number 33. This is a multi author series which each book as a stand alone story.
I enjoyed this story that started out with a feisty young woman returning home after attending a girl's etiquette school. Her appearance may have changed but she still had some of her previous Tom boy abilities. As the stage coach she was traveling in was attacked by bandits, Summer Bennett was able to crawl out of the window to the driver's seat. As the driver was killed by the bandits, she took control of the horses to try to get away from the bandits. Just as her hope to save the people inside the stage coach was failing, a deputy on horseback came to help her defeat the bandits. She had no idea that the handsome deputy was her childhood tormentor Jesse Slade.
Jesse Slade remembers his many times of arguing with Summer. They had a difficult past with many altercations. When Jesse gets a look at the girl he hadn't seen in years, he was totally surprised at how she had changed into a beautiful young woman. Jesse's brother Cal is the town sheriff and Jesse is a deputy sheriff. Jesse has a reputation of being the town hero.
Summer has no idea that Jesse has become engaged to her sister Rosie. She also has no idea that their father has been very ill and unable to run his business. Summer had returned to her hometown as a mail order bride and was set to marry a very wealthy man. She now knew it was very important for her to continue her plans to marry so that she could help take care of her family. Her only problem was her growing feelings towards Jesse not as a tormentor but as someone she could love.
Would Jesse and Summer discover they had both been engaged to the wrong people before her wedding takes place to her mail order groom?
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.
Summer is one spunky woman. On the way home from her aunt's etiquette school Summer doesn't act much like a lady as she saves the day when the stage is attacked by bandits. Has she really learned how to act like a lady? Summer discovers several new things at home also: her childhood nemesis is engaged to her sister & still is a thorn in her side with his teasing. He doesn't act much in love either. Neither does Summer, however. How both sisters find their "true love" makes this story interesting & entertaining. I received an ARC. This is my voluntary opinion.
I love Marie Higgins’ characters, not only are her heroes handsome, honest and brave, but her women are pretty, honest (except perhaps with themselves) and brave. No hand wringing, standing by to be saved for them. Spunk is a good word for Summer’s personality. She likes being a lady, but the tomboy just has to come out. Another good story with romance, humor, bravery and a little treachery from this author.
Summer is really full of Spunk, so a great title! She comes back home after going to finishing school, only to get held up on the stagecoach! Of course this brings her in contact with the pain in her youth, namely, Jesse.
But sometimes hardships in youth, might just change to agreeable terms as adults. Summer might not have to become a mail order bride, because it might be there right in front of her!
Summer’s Spunk is an exciting story. She certainly does have spunk. I so enjoyed the journey as Jesse came to appreciate her spunk. I liked the tension Adam brought to the story. Cal and Rosie are a great addition to the book. The intrigue and adventures kept me reading and reading throughout the story. Fans of historical romance with a touch of mystery should like Summer’s Spunk.
Delightful story. Summer certainly has a lot of spunk. Summer and Jesse were always fighting. Summer has been away, learning how to be a lady, instead of a tomboy. Of course, the first person who helps her is Jesse. She hasn't been home 5 minutes and they are starting again. Is the fighting hiding their true feelings. I was given an ARC of this book by the author for an honest review.
Summer and Jesse Heartfelt romance with a twist and turn down to earth and believably flawed characters, and witty, entertaining dialogue. Just marvelous. Intense read you will love.
This was truly an incredible adventure, right from the start. Full of surprises, joy, pain, sorrow, and finally the love they all deserved. Great characters, Jesse, Summer, Cal, and Rosie, filled this story with excitement. Such a happy ending story!
Summer loves her family and wants to help them. Summer's unpredictable personality brings many different situations to this page turner. Five stars for originality in the mail order bride genre.
I loved this book. It was very well written. The characters were both wonderful and yet so very frustrating... There were definitely no dull moments. I honestly couldn't put it down.
I enjoyed the book! The story was interesting with some drama at the beginning and unexpected happenings near the end. I highly recommend reading this book!
