And the search continues! Shadow's Debt had a lot of potential to be what I'm looking for in an paranormal/urban fantasy story featuring Black characters...but it just didn't quite hit the mark.
In terms of setting the stage in these books, there's a fair amount of world and lore building that is required, and then continuity to help weave everything together and make sense of the world thats been created, and that is largely where Shadow's Debt fell short.
I feel like the book spent too much time on what ultimately felt like a contrived paring, rather than really delving and digging into the world, the lore, the rules of the universe. And even the relationship between Andre and Simone felt rushed from the very beginning through to the end. I understand that on a biologic level, since she is Andre's Shadow, that they are drawn to one another and there is a soul and cellular level bond. But that doesn't mean that I'm going to believe that given the circumstances of their paring, that Simone is going to simply fall in love with Andre in 3 weeks without them even really getting to know one another. Even in the very beginning when they were first introduced and Simone realized that she'd been sold away, there was almost an immediate disregard for THOSE feelings as she just started caving to her attracting for him. It just felt forced.
When it came to the world, lore, and rules of this universe, it felt incomplete. It didn't feel fleshed out, and a lot of times, things felt glossed over or rushed. In these types of books where you're creating rules for things that are outside of the norm because we're dealing with creatures and beings that don't follow the human ways of being, you have to take great care to explain why things are they way they are, HOW things can happen, etc. That didn't happen in this book and it was glaring. There was even a part of the book that went against the very lore that Danni created. In this world, when a Nightshade finds their Shadow and they're bonded, their souls are tied, and so if one dies so does the other. This is a well known and proven fact. But then there was mention of a Nightshade King having lost his Shadow...yet the King was still alive. Now I understand that maybe that was supposed to allude to the fact that maybe she WASN'T dead...but if I as the reader am supposed to infer that, then why wouldn't the characters in the book ALSO infer that? It just didn't make any sense.
I do have a ton of questions noted throughout this book, but unfortunately I won't be getting the answers to them, because I just can't see myself trying to get through the rest of the books.
It wasn't a TERRIBLE book by any means. Just isn't what i'm looking for in this kind of book.
Andre and Simone. No depth. The story is told instead of felt. In certain places, some of the sentences were repetitive and it could use more detail and insight into the characters' feelings. For instance, that Simone was upset about being "sold" to Andre was understandable, but form the outset, I didn't know or deduce from the book why Simone was so angry with her family. Because of this, the animosity her brother had was baffling and misplaced since we don't get any background for it. It could've even been explained away based on dragon culture if it wasn't personal, but nothing. It made the fact that her father excommunicated her make even less sense that it did already. Simone's dad basically gave Simone to Andre for monetary reasons but then insisted she talk to him privately, but why? And her refusal was enough to turn her away from the conclave? Simone then joins Andre's court, helps stave off an assassination attempt against Andre, finds an anci, well hidden artifact with ease and without asking many questions or thinking things through, which is followed up by a battle where Andre is stabbed in the back, Simone is having some odd sleeping issue, her mother is kidnapped and her father and brothers killed, then her mother turns up the hatred for Simone's bond to Andre and it's forget mom. Just scratching my head.
The book has good bones and ideas that would've made this one fantastic had it been developed better. More time spent on details would've helped and the late flurry of action packed events was interesting but too rushed.
Dnf@66% . Not for me. I thought it was gross that a grown man felt a “pull” towards a 15 year old (don’t care that it was explained away by the “shadow bond” or that he waited until she was 24 to “claim” her). This is creepy. Added to that was the jumbled storyline, I simply could not and did not finish.
After everything she endured at the hands of her family, she never imagined she’d be sold into marriage to pay a debt to a noble vampire - the daughter of the dragon alpha. There’s action, adventure, sex, evil rulers, plotting and more. I hope there will be a continuation to this specific story. This was a great read!
I just loved this book. It was a lot of action and betrayal. Greed was very present in this book. I wonder what type of necklace did the fae give her. I hope he don't think he is her other mate.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The detail was immaculate and the storyline easy to follow and very entertaining. Simone is a sweet character with inner ferocity a perfect match for her beau!
What an adventure this book took you on. I loved Andre and Simone together and only wish that move of their connection was displayed. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
I so love Andre and Simone! You can feel their bond through the pages. This is a romance but non romance readers will enjoy the action and thriller nature. I can not wait to binge the rest of the series.
