Five years ago, the Church brutally destroyed the Mercenary Guild in an act of retribution. Kelnin, the last known member has returned from hiding and is immediately hired to protect Gwynna. On the run from the Church with something she stole, she needs to get to Meltok, a neutral city, where she hopes to find answers.
Elsewhere, the mage Dunsit is hiding in plain sight as a healer in a well renowned city. Yet the longer he stays there, the more he realizes something supernatural is feeding on the patients in the center. In an act of indignation, he decides to hunt down the creature and stop it.
In a world where non-humans are hunted relentlessly by the strongest power in the land, these three will have to solve deadly mysteries.
I don’t even like fantasy, but Sean Patrick Cain’s “Mercenary’s Return” hooked me, and kept me engaged the whole way through. His characters are relatable, distinct and entertaining. The plot is easy enough to follow that I sailed through the story, never having to go back and clarify what I’d already read. I quickly became invested in the story and characters, so much so that I had trouble putting the book down. The pacing is consistent and flows steadily, leading the reader effortlessly from sub chapter to sub chapter. Sean’s writing is so flawless I cannot believe this is his first novel. He has a gift, and I hope he continues to write. I anxiously await his next novel, as I need to know what Kelnin, Gwynna and/or Dunsit gets into next. I’m sad the book is over. I miss the characters already.
