Young Ashley Rice is scared. There are strange noises coming from the bedroom next door at night. The room that has been empty for two weeks and is kept permanently locked. When he confronts his mother about it, she tells him he’s imagining things, having nightmares, and to stop being silly. But Ashley is not convinced.
Soon, things take on a more sinister turn of events. He hears his parents talking about Grandma and the bad things she got involved with. It seems Ashley’s mother is keeping secrets from him; knows more than she is letting on. And as the sounds and intensity grow in the empty room, Ashley starts to fear not just for his sanity, but also for his life and those around him. Because the voices he hears coming from that room sound very suspiciously like his grandma’s. The problem is she died two weeks ago, and no one has been in that room since.
No spoilers. 4 stars. 12 year old Ashley Rice liked to sleep with the lights on. It made him feel safer...

This was a spooky tale of things that go bump in the night and what happens to us after death. Do we go to heaven or hell, and is there a way to postpone that trip.
I saw that some reviewers felt this story was appropriate for all ages. I wouldn't recommend this story to children... I wouldn't recommend it to some adults I know who are afraid of the dark, lol.
If you like stories like this about unsettling things in dark bedrooms when going to sleep, you might also like THE WHITE BOY by Trace Conger.
Oh, you guys had me looking like a simpleton. I read the reviews and was convinced this was a middle grade book but enjoyable for adults, too. I was looking for some scary, spoopy, fun ghost story. I have never heard of the author before. My bad. This is NOT for children. And everyone had me fooled. 😂 Once I looked up the author and saw he also wrote Splatterpunk I knew what kind of crowd this was. Tricksters. 😂 Anyways, I liked the book. Very good. I just cant get the scene out of my head in the movie Anger Management when at the end of the movie a prank is pulled and the essentric guy says, "Dr. B, Davey just pulled a JOKE on us!" and stomps his foot angrly. 😂 That's how I feel. I am a simpleton.
This is another great book from Justin Boote, in fact the third of his I’ve read this year. It’s a creepy tale with enough shocks to keep readers of any age happy, but tamed enough for younger readers. Ouija boards, voices and things that go bump in the night!
This is a great series and this and wonderful addition to it.
The book started out strong and held my attention to the end. I like the authors writing style. Scary and creepy. Perfect story for the Creepy Little Nightmares series. Can't wait for the next book!
I loved everything about this book. Takes me back to being a kid, listening to scary stories told by elders. Then late at night trying to sleep every little sound would be another ghost. You lay in bed praying it doesn't get you! Same way with this book. This is a kids nightmare all too real! Keep up the good work Wicked House Publishing! Great book Justin Boote!
Justin Boote’s In Grandma’s Room is a haunting addition to the Creepy Little Nightmares series. With its unsettling premise and an atmosphere that grips you from the very first page, this story is a thrilling ride into a world of familial secrets, ghostly encounters, and a room that holds more than just memories.
🚨 Spoilers Ahead! 🚨
The story follows Ashley Rice, a curious and brave young boy who hears strange noises coming from his late grandmother’s locked room. Despite the eerie warnings and his mother’s strict prohibition, Ashley’s growing curiosity leads him closer to uncovering the sinister truth about what really resides behind the door.
The pacing is well-done, with the tension building steadily as Ashley’s encounters with the supernatural grow more intense. The relationship dynamics—particularly between Ashley, his mischievous younger brother Karl, and their stern but secretive mother—add depth to the unfolding mystery.
The chilling moment when Ashley hears his name being called from the locked room, in a voice eerily similar to his deceased grandmother’s. It perfectly encapsulates the book’s ability to mix suspense and terror.
“Some secrets are better left buried—but in Grandma’s room, they refuse to stay that way.”
While the book is undeniably creepy, the resolution leaves a few loose ends that might frustrate readers looking for a more concrete conclusion. Additionally, the adults’ behavior, particularly Ashley’s mother, can sometimes feel more cryptic than necessary, leaving readers craving more clarity.
Overall, In Grandma’s Room is a solid entry in the series and a must-read for fans of middle-grade and YA horror. It’s eerie, atmospheric, and just the right amount of scary to keep you reading late into the night.
I DEVOURED this story. I have 2 ways of loving books that I really enjoy - one is that I don’t want them to end, so I’ll read another book to make the other one last longer (yes, I know that sounds a little serial 🤪) and then there’s the other side of me that just cannot stop reading because I want to know what is going to happen in the end. So my love for this story was the latter. I have 3 small babies, I couldn’t put this thing down!! I turned down my own naps (which equals sanity) just to keep reading this. It’s late, I don’t even have time to write a proper synopsis, but just read this story. TRUST ME
This didn't end the way I wanted. However, it is a good, thought provoking read. Not for the squeamish. I feel there were some editorial blunders, but that's not on the author.
For a short book, this was sure boring with maybe 3 or 4 spots that were half creepy, just a total non believable cheesy train wreck, this author is wrapped up for me.
Ashley Rice is terrified. His grandmother enters his room at night and takes him to her locked room. How could she? She's been dead for a couple of weeks, which explains the foul stench that enters Ash's room when she arrives. Ash's parents gaslight him; they claim he is just dreaming. But Ash sees the Raskolnikov glances and overhears their conversations.
The first book in the Creepy Little Nightmare series set me up! It was a 'feel-good' victorious ending; the kind that says, "Yeah, you did it!" I was on a high and expecting something similar. However, this book is darker than I could have ever fathomed in a thrilling, don't-put-me-down way. I knew that something supernatural would occur, but I was unprepared for the incidents (deaths, vigils, sacrifices) in this book.
The word "grandma" usually sparks images of an endearing person, whose love is unyielding. Everything that she desires for her grandchildren is like images of rainbows and flowers. This grandmother is the hag of the universe, and through flashbacks, pertinent details about Ash's grandmother, from her marriage and birth of her two daughters to her demise in her only living daughter's house, are provided. These details intensify the horror in this story because you get an idea of what grandma is capable of; but it will make you think twice about allowing an elderly parent, with whom you have not been in contact for many years, live with you.
Book 2 of the Creepy Little Nightmares series proved as good as the first. Again, it is a book that can be equally enjoyed by young adult readers and adults alike. It has the paranormal element that will creep you out, the questionable element that makes you wonder if things are really as they seem, and a really unexpected twist. Very satisfying!
