This was a book I picked up since it sounded interesting although the cover was making me wonder.

Reading with God's Creatures starts off with a small poem that reminds readers of the Judeo-Christian Creation and how Adam was tasked with naming the animals as well as Eve when she was also created. The book then tells readers that they learned so much by taking care of the animals and watching them which can then be repeated by readers as they learn to read various animal names as well as how to spell them.

Most of the pages have multiple entries which are longish non-rhyming or flowing poems that provide readers with the name of the animal and some nonfictional information as well as some nods to possible fictional events like hippo dances.

The book ends with a listing of letters encouraging young readers to write down other animals that start with those lessons in an ongoing attempt to learn from the animals.

For every few entries, occasionally just one, readers will get a doodle-like illustration as represented by the cover art with all the mentioned animals. These remind me of what a child may draw, especially if a bit more talented than stick figures and the colors are also just as unrealistic as some of the portrayal.

My biggest thing is that the book uses joey for J and ursa for X instead of looking for actual animals that start with those letters.

And for a book that is meant for toddler readers I can't imagine this hitting home due to its length.

Otherwise it was decent but not an alphabet book I would keep on my shelves.
