Juniper Meadows #1

Where We Belong

Rate this book
On paper, Hope Travers has an idyllic life. Living in a bustling farmhouse with her mum, aunt and uncles, cousin and too many dogs to count, surrounded by the breath-taking Cotswolds countryside, she knows she is privileged and protected. But all families have secrets, and the Travers family are no exception. Their farmhouse sits in the grounds of the Juniper Meadows estate, passed down through the generations and now being made to pay its own way with a myriad of businesses and projects. When a construction crew uncover what appear to be historical ruins, the history of the Travers family is put under ever closer scrutiny as a dig gets underway. Hope may have found a blossoming romance with local archaeologist Cameron Ferguson who is running the dig, but when things start to go wrong around the estate and family secrets begin to be revealed, Hope wonders if she’s made a big mistake in digging up the past.

I really enjoyed the start of this new series and thought it was a strong story throughout. I am excited for the next instalment already, feeling like I know the characters of Juniper Meadows very well.

This book is littered from disasters from the very beginning. It seems incredibly optimistic to start with, thanks to Hope embarking on the exciting journey of building her own house in the estate grounds where her family lives. But, on the first day the build is halted thanks to a surprising archaeological discovery. Enlisting Cam and his team for further investigations, more is uncovered and further mini disasters appear to thwart Hope’s dreams of ever getting out of the ground. And with someone apparently targeting Juniper Meadows, these malicious acts are threatening to send the family business into a downward spiral. Will the bad misfortunes ever end?

The characters in this book are all very heart-warming and I loved the strong family connections with Hope’s relatives. Despite being of a wealthy background, they are incredibly “normal” and I think that is why she and Cam have such a strong relationship. I liked how Bennett gives more background with Hope’s immediate family and I look forward to exploring this further in the follow-up story.

There was never a dull moment with this read and I found I could not put it down. The setting sounded beautiful and it was great seeing a potentially stuffy, excessive hall transformed into something that is of benefit to the local community. Indeed, when the crimes towards Juniper Hall intensify, I enjoyed seeing everyone pull together to help out. Although I guessed some of the plot development, it was open-ended enough at the conclusion for me to remain excited for the next story.

Despite the archaeological background, this was not a dry and historical story. In fact, I don’t think this element ever gets started – and this is not down to the writer. With events impeding Cam and his team’s work, no concrete answers are ever provided about the site where Hope wishes to build her home. Bennett makes some suggestions but Cam does not have the capacity to explain what ruins have been discovered because of the repeated disruptions. I hope there is opportunity for more revelations about Hope’s wealthy family background in the story to come.

A very strong start to a new series, I feel impatient for the next one. I can’t wait to find out what happens next with Cam, Hope, the dig and Juniper Meadows. There are so many different strands to this story beyond a summer romance – family relationships, addiction, career advancements and history – that there is so much material left to explore at Juniper Meadows.

With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Yes, I think I’m going to rather like it at Juniper Meadows – the family farmhouse, the gin distillery, the luxury hotel and spa, the whole estate and its farm and camping grounds, the surrounding Cotswolds countryside, all just perfect. And as for the Travers family – well, let’s just say there’s enough material there for a rather substantial series, as some of the secrets either hinted at or starting to be uncovered in this first episode continue to unspool.

At this story’s centre is Hope, finding life with her sprawling family all well and good, but keen to build a home of her own on the estate – but the discovery of some historical remains at the site she’s chosen bring her into contact with Cam, a lecturer in archaeology at the university, who agrees to organising a dig over the summer holiday. And that rather adds to the already substantial cast list – his friend and fellow lecturer Barnie (a character I particularly liked), a team of other archaeologists, and a group of students keen to develop their skills. There’s a multiplicity of storylines centred on different characters – which I’m not going to try and disentangle, as the author does it so much better – but it soon becomes clear that there are layers of secrets within this less than conventional but very close family that won’t remain hidden for much longer, and their impact will be far reaching.

There’s a convincing developing romance that I really enjoyed – despite the gulf between their very different backgrounds – and a considerable amount of well-handled drama when it becomes clear that someone has a vendetta against the estate and begins wreaking havoc. And there are a number of sub-plots – one about one of the students and his overbearing and obnoxious father is a perfect counterpoint to the warmth of the Travers clan, and a nice demonstration of class being about rather more than power and wealth. Fatherhood does prove to be rather a recurring theme – Hope herself has always had the perfect surrogates in Zig and Zap (ah yes, those names – all becomes clear as you read!), but her own father’s identity has long been shrouded in mystery, and as the truth emerges it proves a considerably less than comfortable experience.

I’ve tied myself up in knots a bit trying to share a flavour of the story (sorry!) but this book really is the most perfect start to a new series. By its end, I’d got a really strong fix on the Travers family themselves – all really well-drawn and intriguing characters, tremendously likeable – but with those well-guarded secrets about to create substantial waves. I’m very much looking forward to seeing how their various stories unfold…

Where We Belong by Sarah Bennett was an enjoyable romance, friendship and family mystery set on an estate where there are secrets, history and wonderful family relationships. Hope Travers lives in a huge farmhouse with her mother and extended family on the grounds of Juniper Meadows. The original home is now a B&B, as well as other businesses on the grounds. Hope is ready to have her own place, but when they are breaking ground for her own house, they find ruins that halt the construction for further investigation. The archaeologist, Cameron Ferguson, is a man with some baggage, but he and Hope seem to hit it off right away. As the dig begins, there are problems involving team members and some vandalism on the farm. Is someone trying to stop the dig or is there something else going one?

This was a sweet romance that held my interest from beginning to end. I loved all the characters, and their relationships. There was some mystery involving Hope's past that added much to the story, and had me feeling for her. She was a complex character that had a lot to deal with, and I loved how Sarah Bennett dealt with all her issues. The secondary characters were also well developed and added much to the story. There was a lot happening in this story between the dig, the various students working on the dig, Hope's family and their problems as well as her relationship with Cameron. Hope and Cameron have a lovely relationship, with them getting to know one another and finding that their feelings are real and reciprocated. As the past comes to light, will it damage the family, their relationships and business, or bring them closer together. I am hoping this is the first in a series, as I would like to see what is next for the Travers family.

Disappointing end to the book

I'm always hugely disappointed to reach the end of a book to find no conclusion. I feel quite cheated to realise I have to buy the next in the series to find out what happens to all the characters I have enjoyed reading about. most books that are in a series resolve issues but leave an opening for other characters stories to grow into the next book in the series. This book in particular has way too many unresolved dilemmas. What happens to the dig site? Do Cam and Hope stay together? What other family secrets are there? Is there a relationship blossoming between Rhys and Amelia? Is there really a family curse? What happens to Amelia's father? Does Scott's father allow Scott to go his own way? Can I be bothered to read another book in the series to find another disappointing ending? The answer to the last question is a resounding NO! Will I bother to read any other books by this author? Probably not and certainly not without finding out if the story is complete. Even leaving a negative review is disappointing and not something I would usually do and for this I apologise to Sarah Bennett.

You can’t go wrong with a mysterious archeological discovery by a family with an equally mysterious past.

Hope Travers live and work with her extended family on their estate that offers luxury accommodation and various attractions for their guests. She wants her own space though and everything is finally in place to break ground for her new house. But the construction hits a snag when the digger unearths items that may be of historical value. Hope contacts Cameron Ferguson, a professor at a local university, to investigate and excavate the site. Rumour has it the site is cursed and with all the accidents and unexpected revelations of long-buried secrets, this might just be true.

There are a lot of things I liked: the archeological dig, Hope’s fascinating family, Hope and Cameron and their slow-blossoming romance. The book has a gentle and relaxed pace, even through the more harrowing events, but with enough energy to keep interest high.

Things wrap up quite quickly and the ending feels a bit abrupt, but there is more to come and I look forward to it. I am most excited to find out more about the excavation and what is hiding under the ground.

I can recommend this book if you like a subtle romance that develops slowly, with some intrigue and well-developed characters.

A new start to the series, a book of friendships, family, love and secrets all rolled into one, a great start for readers to love.
Hope Travers and her family in the farmhouse on the Juniper Meadows estate that has been past down through generations is the family's history in jeopardy after a construction crew uncover ruins that's run by
Cameron Ferguson and what is unveiled.
A romance that I hope will carry on in more books to come.
Where we belong lets readers get to know all the characters and their day to day lives that captures a warm feeling in you with secrets to be told.
I adored this read a great start, a new beginning, with wholesome chapters that fun fill your reading time, just lovely once again by this author, a well deserved 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book, it’s not usually something I’d pick up however it’s pleasantly surprised me. This is my 2nd book to my book adventure Calendar it was a nice break from reading fantasy a lot recently and it kept along the same lines as my mystery book previously as there was still a mystery element to it which kept me engaged.

This was very slow going and I feel like the plot was mediocre to boring until 70% of the way through. So many unfinished storylines and I was flabbergasted that before anything was resolved, I was presented with the Epilogue!
Now this might be the beginning of a good series, but I certainly will not be reading further and I think the book should have tied up all loose ends.
It was superficial, the characters shallow with hints at interesting threads to follow that were not taken up; the two main characters falling into a cosy relationship so quickly; the author expecting us to identify with a privileged woman as if she was one of us!
No, I will not be reading on.
Nice cover though.

This book was confusing to me. All the buildup about her dad and brother and nothing? Is that coming in another book? Same with the excavation, is that just not happening? There were several things along that same line (Scott and his father?). I do plan on reading the second book to see if that answers my questions and may revise my stars. I did like the story in general and the author’s style, but didn’t like all the energy spent on plot lines that didn’t appear to go anywhere.

I like getting in at the start of a new series - and I just know that this is going to be one of the best!

Stourton Hall, like many other stately homes, has diversified in order to keep going; the extended family of Hope Travers are all involved in one way or another in the running of the rebranded Juniper Meadows estate which has a lot going on. Working together and living together has been a bit overwhelming, especially with Hope being aware that there are family secrets being kept.. Excited that this is the day when ground will be broken for her new house, she soon comes back to earth with a bump when the builders think they have discovered ancient ruins. Bringing in a local archaeologist, Cameron Ferguson to investigate further, Hope wonders if she's done the right thing when family secrets begin to emerge. Then she and Cam grow closer and life is rosy - until other things begin to threaten the family business . . .

Having enjoyed several of Sarah Bennett's previous novels, I was really looking forward to this one - and I was not disappointed. Everything about this book is cleverly crafted: the characters, the back-story, the setting and the current story lines. While this is a complete read in itself, I'm already looking forward to the next one which is always the sign of a cracking book! Beautifully written, and with a very enticing cover, I am very happy to give this one all five sparkling stars and my recommendation.

Juniper Meadows is an estate that has an inn, small stores and a distillery. Hope wants to build a house for herself so she has some privacy. When the digging starts they find pieces that look like they be from a historic site. Hope goes to the closest university and meets Cam.
When Cam comes to the estate to research the find he also comes to get to know Hope better.
A cute romance.

A new twist on romance

With characters that are beautifully drawn and a setting that is unusual but that fits the story, you won’t be able to put down Where We Belong. Family issues, work problems, and mysterious happenings all promise to keep you turning the page. I have to give Where We Belong five stars.

I love Sarah Bennett books, so I was delighted that she is beginning a new series and I was thrilled to be invited along on the blog tour. It therefore made me even happier that Sarah’s writing (already so good) just seems to keep getting better all the time. Sarah writes realistic and relatable characters, the kind you’d be friends with in real life, but her supporting cast are just as well rounded and likeable too. I mean there’s a certain cousin I’m hoping we will see more of, or even get his own book, but this is Hope and Cameron’s tale.

I loved the concept of an archaeological dig, it’s not something I read often in romance, in fact this might be my first one. I found it so interesting and so nice to have a fresh take, what also impressed me was how clearly well researched this was, Sarah’s descriptions are immersive and you could be there yourself with one of those teeny tiny brushes, sweeping the dirt aside.

Of course, we have our drama, because no one wants to read a romance free of it, how boring would it be, couple meet, fall in love ,the end ! A bit of drama always makes things interesting (as long as it’s in books and not our own lives). I loved the themes of trust, who you give it to and if that is misplaced or not (read for yourself for the answers) I loved this so much and I'm eager to see where Hope and Cameron’s story takes us, this is a wonderful beginning to what looks to be another fantastic series from Sarah Bennett.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Set in the beautiful Cotswolds we are at Juniper Meadows for the start of a new series by Sarah Bennett.

Hope is in the process of building a house on the easte grounds when haulted by archaeological ruins Cameron is called in charge of the dig. Family secrets will be revealed.

I enjoyed the character developments throughout the book, beautiful settings which I devoured in just a few sittings.

This is going to be a fantastic series that I will have no problems recommending and cannot wait to read Amelia's story next what a cliffhanger to leave it on.... roll on autumn!

unsatisfactory ending…

It was a nice but incomplete read. Everything seemed a little too perfect and I had hoped for a conclusive ending - which I didn’t get! So many loose ends with not a thread to weave! Based on the ending alone I can’t recommend.

Not my cup of tea

So rambling and disjointed, not sure if there actually was a plot or storyline. The ending left more questions than answers. I found it neither heartwarming nor uplifting. I usually love the books that come out of Boltwood.

I have been a fan of Sarah’s work for quite a while now. By no means have I read everything that she has written but I hope to rectify that in the not too distant future. I read the synopsis of ‘Where We Belong’ and it certainly sounded liked the sort of story I have come to expect from Sarah – a page turning romance, with a fair bit of drama and family issues along with the way. I was spot on too. ‘Where We Belong’ is the first book in a new series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Where We Belong’ but more about that in a bit.

As with all of Sarah’s books, I was drawn into this one from the very start. I warmed to the characters from the start and I ended up feeling as though they had become friends of mine rather than characters in a book. I started reading and basically forgot to stop. I had only intended to read a couple of chapters to say that I had made a start but I ended up becoming so wrapped up in the story and in the lives of the characters that I was still sat there reading several chapters and an hour or two later. I developed my own theories as to what was going to happen so I had to keep reading to see if I was on the right track or if I had wandered off in the opposite direction. The more of the book that I read, the more I wanted to read and the quicker the pages seemed to turn. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘Where We Belong’ and I had to say goodbye to Hope, Cameron and the rest of the characters. I found ‘Where We Belong’ to be a delight to read from start to finish and it left me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

‘Where We Belong’ is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Sarah Bennett. Sarah has one of those easy going writing styles that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. In fact reading one of Sarah’s books feels more like a chat between friends rather than reading an actual book. I hope that makes sense. For me, the story his the ground running and maintained a gentle pace throughout, which suited the story that Sarah is telling. I loved the relationships between the characters and I also loved the fact that dogs were part of the story too but then I am biased since I have two loopy Labradors myself. I love the way in which Sarah makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story themselves.

In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Where We Belong’ and I would recommend it to other readers. I will most definitely be reading more of Sarah’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

I have read a few other series by the author and was pleasantly surprised by the overall tone of this book since it differed in the presentation. It definitely felt like the first in a series, especially because of the unaddressed feelings at the end and some 'missing' family members who have to be taken into consideration to close such a narrative.
The Travers family are a big family living under one roof. The only one chaffing under this arrangement is Hope, and she plans to change that soon as she is breaking ground to build a new house a little further away from the main family home. It is then that they discover some curious artefacts, and she has to know what that means for their land.
Hope's male counterpart is a professor at the university who would love an opportunity for an archeological discovery that will help his students as well as not involve him spending any money as he investigates.
Hope and Cameron may come from different worlds, but they are practically sustainable. They work similarly and are both plain-talking individuals. The chaos of such a large household seems new to Cameron, but he starts to like what being included means.
The author has dropped a lot of hints as to what the future books could contain. We have some secrets the great-grandfather held out, Hope's real father and the consequences of the mishaps in the very last chapter and the change of narrators.
Throughout the book, we see Hope and Cameron's point of view. At the very end, that shifts and probably (I am guessing here) the future pair for the next book.
I am a completionist in such cases and love it when we get to peek into everyone's lives before letting them go. I prefer the saga variety usually because individual people are more consistently written, but the author has entertained me in the past with her ability to write intriguing characters whose emotional quotient is quite high, so I am looking forward to what might be next for this family.
I recommend this book to those on the lookout for a slightly mysterious family drama with a lot of pairing-offs.
I received an ARC thanks to Netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.
