Von Weizsacker's Diary

Rate this book
In the last days of WW2, an American bomber sinks a German submarine in the West Indies. The crew manages to board life rafts but the weather turns deadly. Weeks later, a fishing boat recovers a raft with two dead men aboard—one is the submarine's captain, Oberleutnant von Weizsacker. The captain finds a diary sewn into von Weizsacker's jacket. He scans a few pages but cannot read German—personal effects and the diary are tossed into a box. The captain turns the corpses over to the coast guard but neglects to mention he retrieved some personal effects. Twenty-eight years later, the diary turns up at a Florida flea market. At the flea market, fourteen year old Jimmy Nolan buys the diary for six dollars. One entry describes a box that was buried on the island of Tintimar. Through the years Jimmy dreams about recovering the box. After he graduates from college, Jimmy attempts to pursue his dream but is sidetracked by a wealthy, older woman who is infatuated with him.

Good history/adventure story. I love the beginning. Two kids buy an old WWII German diary at a Florida flea market and things take off from there.
