Upon a Midnight Clear is kind of a sequel to One Sultry Summer. It is based in the same kennel owned by Vicky and Race.
Fiona is the manager of the kennel and since Vicky is off on vacation all the responsibilities fall on her and she takes them very seriously, some very strange things have been going on like disappearing files etc so she decides to go to a security firm.
The last thing Eli Becker wants to do is go and investigate a completely wacko story a few days before Christmas. He only wants to go home to his family, but since his boss and ex-naval commanding officer has a great relationship with Vicky he gives in and the start is less than auspicious, he is bitten by a dog. Him a competent investigator is brought down by a Saint Bernard, a teen-aged Brian(we met him in the previous book), a 6 year old kid etc..it's seriously hilarious and funny. Poor him, looking after dogs turns out to be more hazardous.
Fiona loves animals and owns 13 of them, because of being abandoned as a child she can't turn away any animal. Christmas makes her sad. It was so damn fun seeing Eli and Fiona flirt and neck, all the time they are caught by Brian. I love both of them, the book was fun, hilarious and sweet. Eli is totally adorable and Fiona was great as well. She tends to get angry and then Eli is totally confounded and so sweet and Eli talking to that dog about women totally cracked me up.
I loved this book! Some of the best characters in it were the animals staying at the Oak Hill Pet Motel but that's not to say that the hero and heroine weren't fantastic. Fiona was one of my dream heroines; a lover of animals and a collector of strays/abandoned pets. Eli was the perfect tough guy who was frustrated with a security case that he can't believe he has to work on over the Christmas holiday.
See Fiona thinks someone is breaking into the Pet Motel at night Eli thinks she's crazy, but as the days pass he begins to see that she might be onto something and along the way he falls for Fiona and gets some rough treatment by some of the crazy animals at the motel and their owners. How can you not love the dogs, Rocky, Houdini, and Bundle?
This Desire is full of laughs and is probably one of my favorite Christmas stories so far. I was going to let my friend Jennifer have it, but I liked it too much to let it out of my sight.
