Hide your wings . . . we’re going undercover! Elly Knottleweed-Eversprightly has a secret. A big secret. She is a fairy, and she even has the wings to prove it. Every time Elly goes to a new fairy school, it ends in disaster, but this week, Elly is going undercover at her friend Jess’s South Street School. Human school should be a piece of cake. No spells. No flying. Just normal human stuff. But Elly’s fairy blunders make her feel like she’s been living under a toadstool. Plus, there’s something fishy going on. All the girls are into fairies, and Elly smells magic. Is she really the only fairy at South Street School?
Meredith Badger is the author of Fairy School Dropout, Fairy School Dropout Undercover, and the first book of a new series, Tweenie Genie: Genie in Training. Originally from Australia, Meredith now lives in Germany with her family. She is also a writer for the Go Girl! series.
An absolutely adorable book! It may be short for others but I found it was a perfectly comfortable length for me. When I was 11, this book really stole my heart and I kept coming back to it because of 1. Meredith Badger's quirky, cute and magical inventions (seriously, these fairy gadgets are so creative!) 2. The characters. 3. Elinora's hilarious struggles to fit into the human world.
The best part that most people might not notice about the author's fairy school dropout series is how she always flips the stereotype of fairies and even young girls on their head and does it in a cool, casual and humorous way. Note that in the book, Jess (Elinora's human friend) is an inventor. She's the furthest thing from being a fairy-obsessed girly-girl since she'd rather be inventing a flying machine and she kind of looks down on the girls in the "Fairy Club" in school since she thinks they are vapid, shallow and annoying. But surprise! In the end, it turns out the Fairy Club is actually an inventing club for girls and the creator, Caitlyn (in her sparkly pink clothes) is just as interested in inventions and technology as Jess is. A double message on breaking down the "Not like other girls" stereotype and showing that girls can be interested in science, tech and math. I just thought it was really cool, looking back at it now. :)
Fairy School Undercover was an ok book. The story was not very gripping and the characters were not memorable. I did discover a new acronym: W.U.N.C.H box (Whatever U Need Culinary Holder. I thought that was cute. I read this book @ Borders while waiting for my sister and niece. Very quiet read.
