In spite of the fact that this book is in Russian and I even don't know if the English translation ever exists, I want to write this review in English.
Firstly, I gave it 5 stars. There are some reasons.
-The characters. They are developed, they are full and picturesque.
-The plot. It is if not outstanding but the whole idea is really unusual. The shifts, changes and the turns of the plot are sometimes easy to guess and probably it is the only thing that I didn't like much. But it doesn't spoil the whole thing, really.
-Chapters. It is one of a few books where I would say, that the first, second and all the further chapters are equally good. It's a rare situation.
-The genre. This book is not like Lukyanenko's most books. It differs, and if you think that it is how the author writes, so... no. "The princess is worth death" - is the representation of his original style and concepts. And for me an ability to write not like himself and write GOOD is an another point, because of which I have put 5 stars.

So if anyone need a Russian translation of the review, I will be more than happy to do it

This was so good; I didn't want it to end. It's been so long since I'd read something in Russian. I miss it. There were a bunch of cultural references, some that I don't even get anymore. It made me want to listen to some Russian music... I've gotta look up some of those songs.

I've watched the movie; it wasn't as good, but I watched it apparently at the right time. After reading Day Watch (the opening scene in Day watch shows up in the movie); but before the book where Egor talks about his dream that Anton was his father, which is a hint toward the movie...

There was one place that made me curious how the translation would look like -- it was a play on words... Normally I don't think about things like that, but since I started reading this series in English, it was on my mind.

There is I think a little plot hole in the Day Watch, that I cannot quite get my mind around yet in view of later events. Every Other has less 'magic' than normal people, and that's what makes it possible for them to use the magic by absorbing it from others... Now the main thing that happened to start Day Watch book, was that two Others gave too much magic, and now were unable to use magic. If the less magic you have, the more powerful you are, that is not really what happened there. Apparently, rather they gained so much magic that they were now like normal people. And while it is possible to turn normal people into Others, it is done by way of a book "Fuaran" -- NOT by getting small magic from children, that will not help. You have to decrease your magic "temperature", not increase it.

I can't remember much, as I read this series yonks ago. Is this the one that had a penguin in it? Maybe that was a different book I read around the same time. Anyhow, whilst I can't talk about the characters or the plot, because I'm struggling to remember any of it, I can remember that I very much enjoyed the series. And since there seems to be few written reviews for this series on here, I figured my piss poor review might fill the gap until something better comes along. If I could remember more then I'm sure I'd have given ithis series 5 stars. However If I remember liking it, then I can be sure that, in my opinion, it had good non-cookie cutter characters, an excellent turn of phrase and played well with it's premises. Other authors I like (which may bear no likeness to this writer except that I like their writing). Jim butcher, Steven Erikson, Louis McMaster bujold, Brent weeks, Brandon Sanderson, mark Lawrence. Authors I don't like include Robert j sawyer (he has great ideas, I just wish he'd get someone else to do the writing!), terry brooks, and many others I can't recall the name of unfortunately. Hope this helps in someway at least.
