RE The Ego Trip - EO has another unusual HPlandia outing in this one. The h is a diplomat's daughter who has been moving around the world all of her life. She is 22 and her great aunt has just died and left her a cabin on the California coast a bit south of San Francisco ( I am not sure EO was real familiar with the CA coast line - some of the places she describes weren't within easy distance of each other, but I just remember HPlandia physics and went with it). She decides to move there from London as she has always wanted a place to put down roots.
The cabin is a bit neglected as the aunt was very old and hoarded cats. (I can't talk about the fate of the cats, it was horrible- but the h did not do it). She decides to start fixing it up to live in, when she is invaded by a guy whom she had almost hit earlier on the mist shrouded road. He was jogging and she was on the wrong side. This is the H, a deep sea diver on oil rigs, and he accuses her of squatting and tries to kick her out, as he insists the cabin and land are being purchased by him for a diving ranch he is building.
He tells her the cabin will be destroyed so he can put in an Olympic sized pool. The h, dressed in a silver harem suit with no underwears, chases him off with a wet paint brush. The H comes back after he figures out that the crazy lady dressed in a pricey cocktail outfit to paint might be the new owner. He confirms that the h does own the land, tells her she has to sell and then proceeds to boss her around a bit. She chases him off again, but then needs to borrow a ladder, so she goes over to his house to ask.
He lends her the ladder but then she dumps paint all over him so more words are exchanged. The have interesting bickerfest's that are really disguises for the underlying attraction they both feel. He is 35 and thinks 22 is too young for him, plus he is obsessively regimented in his life and surroundings due to his father's influence. He can't stop thinking about the h, even when his GF of 7 years dumps him for a job in NYC, but he thinks it is male menopause.
He finally tries to get the h into bed, but she wants love and he doesn't do that. She decides to sell the cottage and leave the area. In her final evening before departing forever, she builds a big bonfire and then burns her silver harem suit, leaving her naked and crying by the bonfire. The H is overwhelmed by this display and leaps the fence, falls to his knees and proposes. They find themselves switching roles, she is planning ahead and he is becoming more impulsive but they decide to built the diving ranch together and HEA.
It was sweet, the banter was funny and I liked how the h kept getting the better of him even though he tried to be a bully.

Honestly, not as bad as I thought. But it would have been better if there were cats.

I really enjoyed this book - it had lots of humour. The MMC was not a cruel, semi-abusive alpha and the MFC was a little kooky but not a doormat. I liked how she stuck to her principles & turned him down when a "friends with benefits" relationship was the best he could offer. Their interactions were hilarious (the harem suit, fending him off with a wet paint brush!) and I adored the last paragraph. A solid 4 stars, but not a 5 due to the cats' horrible ending.

As a pass time, it was enjoyable. So refreshing even though it was simple. Nevertheless, I liked it. :)
