In Wild Blue Under we have a story of self discovery and love and taking a leap of faith. Our hero, is a prince and heir to the council of the great city Atlantis in the Mer Kingdom. He lives and breathes the water, the sea is his life. But the gods need him to partake on a task, a task that could save the world. His task is to bring home a young woman who has no idea that she is a mermaid, and to have her embrace her heritage, the only problem is she leaves very far from the sea and Rod will have to get legs for a short time to bring her back to claim her inheritance. When he finds her however, she isn't what he expects. He realizes that his job will be a lot harder than he ever thought it would be, and with a danger seeking them both, Rod soon discovers a love and that he never wants to let Valerie go even if it costs him his life under the sea forever...

Wild Blue Under is a wonderful story that I embraced quite quickly. Its a very fast and quick story that lets you escape reality for a time and boy did I love this book. Its not an epic romance, or one that will knock you socks off. However its a enjoyable and very entertaining story that I couldn't get enough of. What I have admired about this authors work is her humor. Her writing is very engaging and quick witted and you just want more and more of it. And man all the bantering that we see and not JUST among the main characters is quite hilarious. What with our talking seagulls. Normally second characters that you love aren't talking birds that are creative, funny and handles tough situations and an obsession with salty fries!! hehe  I do love a solid mermaid romance, and this book ended in such a wonderful way. Our heroine is very confused through much of the book though, which is understandable. She starts to experience things she never really thought that she would have to or never even imagined were real. Rod is very patient, only giving her small bits of information at a time, knowing she would never believe him if he told her the whole truth of who she really is and her destiny. But seeing these two come together, and become true partners was quite sweet. Rod and Valerie just made me smile and kept me happy. Their relationship is the contented type of romance that you don't always see in this genre. It had a very realistic quality to it which I gravitated towards. Of course we have other elements that made this book seem lighthearted and just plain FUN!!

Wild Blue Under is a story of magic under the sea, a heartwarming and lively story to warm you up and keep you wanting more!!

This is the second in the trilogy of Mer people. It took 358 pages to tell a story that might have done better as a short story. Compared to other authors who write about Mer People this lacked depth. The talking sea gull and other birds did not enhance the story line. Emotionally surface. Very little descriptive writing. Not interested in finishing the Trilogy.

Its not really an exaggeration to say I adored the first book, In Over Her Head about Rod's younger twin brother Reel and his love o'life Erica and eagerly looked forward to what adventures the stick in the mud Rod could get into while getting his own love o'life. Mer people are one of those devices in fiction that catch my attention pretty quickly. Hot Mer Men with ironic names, pop culture references with a distinctly Mer people twist, snarky fish, belligerent seagulls...honestly I can go on like this forever.

Rod, who in the first book was an all around stiff-necked goody-goody, shows an entirely different side this time around. While not as carefree as his twin, he relaxes to the point where he made a joke of the situation and it was funny. We learn a little more about why he was so adament about Reel staying Under the Sea--overwhelming and misplaced guilt being a big factor--as well as what is was like for him as the Heir. It wasn't all bubbles and kelp wraps that's for sure.

Valerie is different from Erica in that not only does she technically belong to the underwater kingdom to begin with, but she also rejects it for the better part of the book. Her reasoning behind it is a little iffy--the whole deal with the mother and father that is--and could have done with a bit more fleshing out though. She's a spitfire though, and once the ball gets moving she digs her feet in and she goes with it as much as possible. Not without calling herself insane the entire time, but she at least rolls with it.

The sparks are immediate for Rod and Valerie, and Rod is certainly rather funny. Unlike Reel, who didn't fight his attraction for Erica at all, Rod tells himself, repeatedly, that its just not possible. Or its something in the air. Or the fact her shell-fillers are filled out nicely. He comes up with some pretty creative excuses for his attraction. Valerie on the other hand has to constantly catch herself because she spends a lot of time with her mind wandering off to wicked ways they could be enjoying their time together.

Livingston, yes he's a seagull and yes that name is rather ironic, is an entertaining side companion. He spends a lot of time ribbing Rod for his attraction to Valerie or almost breaking some pretty confidential secrets (or urging Rod to do it). Several characters from the first book make re-appearances. Fisher (Rod and Reel's father), their mother and their younger sister Angel (who has her own book due out in Feb, Catch of a Lifetime). Drake, who I 'm guessing will be the main focal bad guy in the third book as well, also makes a reappearance and is just as nasty as before.

We spend a bit more time with Charley in his role as messenger between the Gods above and the Mer Folk. And we see Fisher not really learning from his mistakes.

So to conclude--great second book, I love Rod (though not as much as Reel) and I'm eager for book 3!

"Wild Blue Under" is the second book of author, Judi Fennell's Mer Trilogy, and the first of hers I have read and definitely won't be the last, either! I will definitely going back and buying book #1 "In Over Her Head" which is about Reel, Rod's brother. However, "Wild Blue Under" didn't suffer at all as a stand alone.

I will say first and foremost, I totally giggled at the Tritone's names, dad's name is Fisher, sons Rod and Reel. I have to throw that out first. I love it! Imagine a world with Atlantis still being under sea, thriving and being ruled by the Mers, well Judi Fennell was able to create this world and mixing in the concerns current today about the environment, and an elite military style group of birds and dolphins. On top of that, throw in the unbelievably sexy Rod and the gorgeous Valerie and some hot, steamy scenes which are hot enough to raise the oceanic temperature and make me wish I had my own real life princely Mer Rod Tritone.

"Wild Blue Under" had action, political coup attempts, jealousy, love and be still my beating heart, Kansas. Judi Fennell included Kansas in her book. Why do I care? I am a Kansas girl, myself and am a little partial to Kansas and will always be a Kansas girl. I just wish, though, she would have added a little more locale detail but even without it, this book was A+ in my world.

Once again, this book was such a fun, delightful read. I love the talking birds, Maybelle and Adele, those two added something special as they thwarted the cowbirds with their feminine charms. Like I always say.... girl power :)

The second in Judi Fennell's unusual romance series, Wild Blue Under introduces us to Rod Tritone, a prince of Atlantis. Rod Tritone is given the difficult task of finding a distant relative Valerie Dumere and convincing her to accept her unique inheritance, the governorship of the Southern Ocean. All he has to do is bring her to the ocean or the sea, one drop of seawater will cause Valerie to grow her mermaid tail. Having lived his entire life in Atlantis, Rod Tritone's vocabulary and experience centers around ocean references, but he can make himself understood. Rod's hadn't expected Valerie Dumere to be disinterested in her inheritance and to have an irrational fear of the sea. But Rod doesn't let these hurdles keep him from his task. When Rod and Valerie travel to the ocean and enlist the help of nearby sea creatures, they face and surmount unexpected dangers together.

Wild Blue Under is a whimsical and witty read. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a light and humorous romance.

1 1/2 stars. I probably shouldn't rate this book so low, it wasn't TERRIBLE in a painful sense, but it was profoundly annoying and my eyeballs hurt from rolling them, so, there ya go.

The first 2/3 of the book is borderline crap. I liked Rod, I liked the idea of the storyline, but the execution was a complete failure. The heroine talked to herself constantly about how hot Rod was, then followed it with a "did I just think that" sorta line. I mean, he leaned forward and his shirt came untucked and she nearly drives off the road in a crisis situation due to a case of the hots from looking at a sliver of his lower back. Seriously. And it was CONSTANT. And when he kisses her, she turns into a prude. After she nearly orgasmed from his hand brushing hers. CONSTANTLY. It got real old real fast. And the whole JR being after them was WAY blown outta proportion. It bordered on ridiculous.

On the positive side, the end was good. I didn't hate the heroine. Uuuummm, I like the Triton family. Ya, that's about it.

This is Book #2 in the Tritone Trilogy and I liked it even better than the first book--which I liked alot! It's such a refreshingly different paranormal romance series and as impossible as Mer people may seem, Ms. Fennell does a magnificent job of making seem completely possible . The hero in "Wild Blue Under", Rod Tritone is the heir to the throne of Atlantis and ladies...he's positively delicious. The heroine, Valerie Dumere, is a spunky, independent and delightfully funny lady...or mermaid? Who just happens to live in Kansas and is convinced she's allergic to the ocean. She's always been looking for something and she soon finds out that Rod holds the key to that missing piece of herself. I highly reccommend this series. I will ready anything that Judi Fennell writes because I know it'll make me laugh, provide a sexy spark and allow me to escape. Isn't that what a great romance should do?

I am starting my review of this book before I finish reading it because it is so bad!!! I can get into a fantasy romance story, but this is so unbelievable it’s cringe. What a waste of a promising plot. I didn’t read book 1. I knew these were ridiculous to begin with, but not this bad.

I’m just starting ch. 17 of 44 chapters, dear Lord help me.
So far it is so ridiculous and unbelievable that it really makes the story terrible. It’s not cute or funny at all. I dislike all the tongue and cheek names and some phrases. I don’t get why the two swallows are even in the story let alone what location there in vs Valerie and Rod’s location. The car drama is supposed to be exciting, but it is so detailed and utter rubbish it falls flat. I started skimming those scenes because of it.

Finished- the swallows still don’t make sense and didn’t need to be in the story. My 1 star rating also stands. This is terrible and not for me. The “love” is like insta-love. It felt like it just got thrown in there.
I kind of like Drake and would have liked more scenes or something with him. I also didn’t feel like his story was wrapped up. Livingston was good also. Rod was meh. Valerie just comes across annoying still. I just realized I have no idea how old Valerie is.
I found at times this book lacked plot details. The second half of the book does sort of get better, at least when compared to first half.
I read this as a stand alone and didn’t get lost without having read the first story. There isn’t any cliffhanger either. I’m not reading anything else by this author.

It was just too ridiculous. I read the first book, and that was okay, but this one I couldn’t suspend my disbelief as much as the book asked me to. Plus, there were some random bits about some birds that I guess were supposed to be funny but were more cringe than anything, plus they came up in the middle of things and interrupted the pace. Those were just tangentially related to the story, and could have been left out without altering the plot at all. It started to become a chore to continue, so I’m out. I have much more interesting things to read.

It had a lot fun ideas, but it was rambling and poorly written. Parts of the book were never really explained. It was a struggle to read for me as have the other books by this author. I will avoid her books in the future

WILD BLUE UNDER—Review

Wild Blue Under

Tritone Mer Trilogy, Book 2

Judi Fennell

Sourcebook Casablanca

Book Blurb:

Rod Tritone, heir to the throne of the undersea world, needs a queen capable of ruling the oldest kingdom on earth. Someone regal, learned and of noble birth. Problem is, the only eligible noble-born Mer princess is half-Human - and she doesn't have a clue about the non-Human part.

Valerie Dumere has screwed up her life at every turn, so when her mother dies and leaves her the family business, Val realizes it's up to her to buckle down and get her life on track. No more excuses.

So when a guy shows up claiming to be her destiny, she scoffs. No way. She isn't running away from her responsibilities ever again - no matter how good the guy looks without a shirt.

But Rod isn't going away. He can't claim his inheritance without her - and Val will lose hers if she goes with him.

It's going to take one whale of a tale to get her to chuck it all and follow him off into the wild blue under...

Growing up, some of my favorite TV shows were a blend of comedy and serious.

I loved the touch of paranormal/comedy in I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched. The comedy was focused on normal humans coming into contact with humans with magical/mythical powers. The fun part was the reaction of everyday people when they did. Magic that got out of hand and the dashing about to save the day. Explaining the unexplainable. Yet, these shows dealt with serious issues and human emotions: love, jealousy, aging, job security, raising kids, nosey neighbors, national security, and interfering in-laws. They all had a ‘twist’ and they made you feel good when the show was over.

This is what I love about Judi Fennell’s books. Romance that’s funny, engaging, definitely hot, and makes you feel good when you’ve finished the book. I loved it!

Wild Blue Under is the second book of Judi’s Tritone Mer Trilogy. It’s even better than the first. Like my favorite shows, it deals with serious issues—life and death but Fennell maintains her theme of Fairy Tales With A Twist. Take the improbable, add superb characters, and then build a marvelous story, filled with laughter, dangerous adventure, romance, and a happy ending.

What would you do if you found out birds could talk, and not only talk but plan out evasive maneuvers when under attack? Or that the talking Sea Gull was the Chief of Aerial Security tasked with the responsibility keeping the Heir to the throne safe? Or that birds could become terrorists and close down airports and create havoc on the highways to stop traffic?

This is just some of the many things that normal, Valerie Dumere, has to not only deal with but also make sense of while dealing with a not normal, hot hunk named Rod Tritone. Valerie is determined to stick to one thing and which is making her mother’s shop a success. She’s done with her restless wandering.

Rod is the sexy, highly responsible heir to the Mer throne. His assignment is to bring half Mer princess to Atlantis. Valerie, on the other hand, doesn’t know she’s half Mer and is deathly allergic to saltwater. Rod fabricates an inheritance to get her to come from the landlocked mid-west to the Atlantic so he can prove to her what she is, and fulfill his assignment.

What follows is a face-paced series of misadventures that will have you not only laughing but also rooting for Val and Rod. Rod’s life is in danger. Valerie thinks she’s lost her mind. Toss in an impossible romance and Livingston, a wisecracking Sea Gull is the Chief of Aerial Security tasked with the responsibility of keeping Rod alive and Valerie to the coast, and you have a highly entertaining read.

Look out world, Judi Fennell’s star is rising high.

The fun and the intrigue continue in this second book in the Mer series by Ms. Fennell. This time, however, most of the action is inland instead of under the sea. I actually like this book a tad better than In Over Her Head. There’s still a slight lack of the family connection/emotion that I also wanted in the first book, but overall I was highly entertained throughout the story.

Instead of fish as secondary characters, this time around we get birds. From seagulls to sparrows, there’s a variety of avian represented by either helping Rod and Valerie or working against them as they race toward the ocean to save the earth, or so Rod has been told by the Atlantis Council. It’s Livingston the Seagull who steals the show most of the time. He’s the head of security for sea creatures and he loves food, especially human food, salty French fries being a favorite.

Rod has been sent to find Valerie, the half-human/half-Mer woman who is pivotal in The Prophecy and has no idea she’s not all human. He has to figure out a way to get her to the ocean, where the Council and the Gods will take over, but in the middle of his attempts to get Val to their destination, the coup to bring down the current royal family hits hard, leaving Rod, Valerie, and Livingston on their own, fighting off a contingent of fish-bomb carrying birds, among others, lead by a revenge-seeking JR, a seagull intent on teaching Rod’s father a thing or two.

Valerie is only along for the ride to take possession of the inheritance her no-good father left her, thereby saving the ocean-themed souvenir shop her mother started on the open plains of Kansas. She’s always been restless, moving around looking for something she can’t name, but when Valerie’s mother passes away, she realizes that little shop is home and where she needs to be. Saving it from the tax man suddenly seems easy when Rod shows up spouting news about her father, a man she’s glad she never knew.

Through the many dangers that blocks their way, the antics of a talking seagull, and the intrigue of what they’ll find at the end of their journey, Rod and Valerie try to fight their growing attraction. But when Rod is denied his tail when finally back home in the water, when it becomes clear who wants him dead, he realizes for the first time he hasn’t really been living his life in preparing to become High Councilman. His life is the woman who stuck by him through thick and thin, to hell with everything else. But will the gods agree and let him walk away to spend a normal life with Valerie?

I really liked how Valerie adapted to every situation that came at them on the road, choosing to stay instead of run like she’s done all of her life. There’s a couple of female sparrows, Maybelle and Adele, who are so cute, and they do their part in helping keep Rod and Valerie safe.

Similar to what happened in the first book, what I didn’t get was a meeting between the brothers, Rod and Reel, when it’s Rod’s guilt over a situation with Reel that has guided him through his life so far. I realize it’s Valerie’s love and his own realizations that help him on that score, but the added emotion that could have come from such scenes with the brothers would have been very welcome.

But this is still a light-hearted book that keeps the fun and smiles coming just as its predecessor did. It’s different and it’s entertaining. I mean, who wouldn’t want a Mer man if he showed up at their door out of the blue? Fanciful fantasy to the very end.

I began this series a bit out of order, I started Wild Blue Under first. It did not confuse me as in the story line but I got a bit annoyed (maybe that is not the right word) with all the under the sea analogies. Every other page something fishy would pop up. For instance, "Oh, Hades!" or "That's it in a conch shell." I was a little tired of it by page 100. Then it began to mellow down. It was as if the longer Rod remained on land the less and less sea analogies he used or even thought about. I wonder if this was done intentionally. It wasn't until I read book one did I realize the imagination and effort it took to write this series.

Ms. Fennell did a wonderful job creating an underwater world with beauty, elegance, mystery and intrigue. This subject is not one that has been over done and there is so much room to grow and expand with it. She could do far more that the 3 books already on the table (Book 3 is slated for Feburary) and her fans would not get tired in the least. The characters are guided by passion, duty and the gods, with Zeus in charge of the whole shibang. Not only is Judi's underwater world a delight but she has a way with timing her plot that is amazing.

The flow of the book was just right. There are times when you read a book and you think to yourself "enough with the . . . Already!" In Wild Blue Under the was never a chance for that. Just when you thought the action was getting a bit much the main characters would have a love scene or the bad guy would flip the script. Great twists and turns, and the hired "antagonist" (!!!) You are never going to guess who it is, don't even try!

Wild Blue Under is a great escape from the world we live in. So, grab the book, a glass of (salt) water and dive in.

Valerie has always tried to keep herself to herself. Sure, she hates seagulls and is deathly allergic to the ocean but that doesn’t stop her from taking over her mom’s shell shop by the sea. One day, a handsome but obviously clueless guy walks in and tells her that her estranged father has died and she is to inherit his estate. She doesn’t think much of it considering the fact that her father never made any attempt at contacting her. But when she realizes her mom’s shell shop is severely in debt, inherence here we come.

Rod is destined to inherit his own title and it’s King of Atlantis. One catch, he needs Valerie to do it. She is beautiful for a halfling (half mer and half human) but he’s not there for romance. He’s there to get her back into the ocean so he can continue with his life.

Unfortunately, his enemies have different plans. While he is escorting her to Bermuda, a coup is forming to stop Valerie from getting her tail and Rod from becoming King. They sent the fiercest mercenary they can. An albatross named JR. And he’s throwing everything they have at them. Diapers, fish…other assortment of trash. Now not only does Rod have to contend with trying to convince Valerie of her true birthright, he also has to somehow get her there safety.

Okay, this book was completely absurd and I didn’t have any real expectations going in but I gotta say…it was a fun ride. Complete 180 from what I generally enjoy reading but what this book offered was mindless fun. Silly characters. And good humor. I can’t say that I loved it but it wasn’t as bad as I was thinking it was going to be.

Talking military seagulls. Their enemy throwing garbage at their car on the highway while the characters scream is fear. Rod/Reel/Fisher as character names. How can you really HATE that.

Wild Blue Under, by Judi Fennell, is a fine successor to In Over Her Head and another enjoyable read. I would never have believed that stories of mermaids and mermen could be so intriguing till I started on this series. But Judi’s gentle humor and convincing imagination makes it easy for the reader to suspend disbelief and enjoy the curious ride.

This second novel takes place mostly on land, with the Heir to the throne of Mer undertaking a task to prove his worthiness. But “worth” is more than meets the brain or eye, and I love the way Judi’s inclusion of Olympian gods provides glimpses of eternal questions—why do bad things happen to good people? Why do things go wrong even when we’ve done everything right?

This being a romance, “worth” also includes true love, and there are some truly hilarious scenes (enormously memorable ones too) as hero and heroine drive cross-country while being dive-bombed by wildfowl, struggling all the time to deny their growing attraction to each other. The advent of large quantities of rain and assorted injuries cause the absence of certain garments and well… you can guess where it’s going, but you’d do much better to read. Airports are closed. Seagulls talk (and eat fries). Evil schemers plot and plan to deceive. And it all leads to the learning of fascinating, satisfying lessons, well-taught by those mysterious gods shifting pawns that still exercise free will.

I may even have liked this novel better than Judi’s first book, which bodes well for the third, coming soon—a really fun read.

Valerie Dumere has always been restless, searching for that something to complete her life. Unable to find it, she returns home to run her late mother's souvenir shop.

Rod Tritone is the Heir to the Kingdom of Atlantis. The council needs someone to go fetch the human, Valerie, to claim her birthright, and they choose Rod to do it. He vows he won't be like his brother and fall in love with the human as he loves the sea and his tail.

When Valerie and Rod meet, sparks fly. Instant attraction, and Valerie wants nothing to do with her inheritance, as she believes her father left her. She never knew him and she doesn't want to now. But when she finds out about back taxes owed on the shop she knows she needs her inheritance to keep it.

She agrees to go to the beach with Rod and his talking bird Livingston even though she is deathly allergic to the sea. But along the way, they are attacked by fish and other anomalies that make their journey treacherous. Rod may never get Valerie to the sea to show her her inheritance, and if he doesn't get his legs back in the water soon, he will lose his tail forever.

Wild Blue Under is another under-the-sea adventure that is simply marvelous. The talking birds had me grinning ear to ear and the romance between Valerie and Rod was sweet, yet passionate. I love this series, and Judi Fennel's imagination knows no bounds. If your looking for a light romance with some comedy and a great plot, pick up WILD BLUE UNDER - there's nothing fishy about it!

"Wild Blue Under" by Judi Fennell was a fast-paced, humorous adventure of story. I received this ARC from a friend at my local bookstore, and after reading the synopsis, decided to give it a read.

Rod Tritone, Mer heir to the throne of Atlantis, has been dispatched on a mission to retrieve Valerie, a half-human, half-Mer, and bring her back to the ocean to claim the legacy her father left for her before he died. Rod thinks this will be an easy mission because what human could resist an inheritance from his/her parent, or the irresistably handsome and messenger bringing the news? Rod and Valerie are in for much more than either bargained for when they begin their trip to the ocean and have to face assassination attempts, injuries, and the undeniable and unmistakable attraction they both have for one another.

At first, I didn't think I would like this book because I hadn't read the first "In Over Her Head," but overall I enjoyed this book. It was an action-packed, fun-filled story, and I enjoyed the writing most of all. The premise of the book was not my normal reading material, but it was very entertaining and humorous. I just loved the talking sparrows and seagull. They were too funny, and such cute characters! I recommend this book to any and all fantasy aquatic lovers that like romance and action in their books with the just right amount of puns and sarcasm throughout the stories!

In Over Her Head, readers were introduced to Reel Tritone. Well in Judi Fennell’s latest release, readers are again brought back to the magical underwater of mermen and mermaids. This time it is Rod Tritone’s story.

Rod’s father is set to retire soon. When this happens, Rod will become the new Mer-King. Unfortunately there is one problem…the council has rules that Rod has to marry. Besides we call now that you can’t rule without a Queen by your side. Rod goes in search for his wife. He trades his fin for a pair of land legs.

Valerie Dumere was born from a merman as a father and a human for a mother. This doesn’t matter as Valerie is afraid of the sea. This is a problem when she is slated to become toe new Queen under the sea. When Rod shows up at Valerie’s door, he can’t deny an attraction he feels towards Valerie. Rod doesn’t have much time to convince Valerie that she belongs with him.

I like this series. As soon as I start reading, I am instantly transported to the sea. It is almost like I can feel the water enveloping me. Judi Fennell makes me wish I was a mermaid. The Tritone men are handsome and sexy. I liked Rod and Valerie but I didn’t really feel the chemistry between them. I wanted more. Also, I had a bit of a hard time getting into this book at first. In Over Her Head may not have won my heart over but I will read the last book in this trilogy.

I love Judi Fennell’s writing. Wild Blue Under is the second book in her Mer trilogy. It is a perfect complement to her first book, In Over Her Head (which I read earlier this year).
I bided my time before jumping to this one because I knew she didn’t have that many books to choose from and I wanted to slowly savor what I could read.

Wild Blue Under picks up with Rod—heir to the throne of the Mer kingdom. He’s the typical big brother with a conscience to always do the right thing. This includes setting out on a venture to bring back Valerie—who is the key to the future of the Mers. What Rod doesn’t know is that this is a test (as the “Gods” are prone to do with their subjects) for him. His chemistry with Valerie is undeniable and they feel like a perfect couple.

I adored Rod. There was just something about him that struck a chord in me. His sense of security and thoughtfulness…all of it…just a charming, lovable man. I thought Valerie was lucky to have him walk into her life.

As with In Over Her Head, Wild Blue Under has a sweet feel of The Little Mermaid to it. Talking animals (birds, lots of birds) and quirky humor keep the tone light and pleasant. There is no drawn out angst to this story…a little turmoil, but nothing shattering. I love these books!

If you want romance and fun…you MUST read Judi Fennell…

I`m just happy it ended the way I wanted it to end.

Wild Blue Under has a nice story line. It came to a point where it was thrilling and I literally was disappointed of Rod's decision of wanting to abandon everything that I took a break from reading it because I was having a hard time believing that the book is about to follow the same plot of In Over Her Head. But alas, it didn't hence the 3 stars.

Though it was a good read, it does have some plot holes including the prophecy and how Valerie came in the picture. Zeus may have told Charley she's not the "that is lost," but still, it was vague since there was no explanation to why she was the "chosen one." Maybe I missed that part of the story IDK. Also, there was also no explanation why Rod wasn't able to grow back his tail the moment he went in the ocean. NADA.

Apart from that, it was a bit witty and more serious than the first book. Lust was still present, no doubt about that but there's also love and compassion not to mention selflessness.

The characters were developed properly though there was no mention of the whereabouts of Erica since Rod and Valerie did stay in her house. Also, I was a bit confused on why the Mers can drink champagne in the ocean. Won't it just mix with the sea water or something?

I love Valerie's back story, though.

I didn't like Valerie Dumere at all. She is easily led and traipses off with Rod Tritone without the slightest idea why. Rod pussy-foots around the reason for the coast visit with some bogus inheritance thing but doesn't actually explain what is going on until that last few chapters of the book. I just couldn't see any normal female person going off on a wild-goose chase with a gorgeous guy and a talking seagull with no real explanation. Then when all the birds chased them for miles and miles and dropped dead fish on the car, Valerie asks for an explanation and actually refuses to go any further without one. And then without one, they are on the road again. It just wasn't believable.

Again I liked the premise but all the fish-isms got on my nerves. (catfish got your tongue, bullsharkshit, yellow-bellied tuna shits, etc). None of the Mer characters could complete a sentence without some fish reference and the talking seagull was beyond annoying. All in all, I just found the whole book irritating. I do own book three in the series and since I need to read it to complete a challenge in November I will. If it weren't for this challenge, I would honestly give up on this one.

Second book in the series and I didn't enjoy it as much as the first. There were a lot of things in this book that bothered me, and I would be tempted to give it two stars except I loved Livingston. He is what made the book in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong. Rod and Valerie are good characters. I liked their story and I liked the mythology woven into the story and the way Valerie inherits who she truly is. It was fascinating. But there were things done in the book that bothered me a lot.

Like Valerie CONSTANTLY nibbling her lips. After the fifth or sixth time it jumped out at me. It's all Rod could see of her. He'd look at her, she looked at him, lip nibble.

And also, when they were in DANGER and pretty close to DYING, Valerie's mind kept going back to how sexy Rod's abs or butt were. It made her less of a strong woman and more of a person with a one-track mind and no spine. I much preferred Erica over Valerie. To me, Erica's flaws were so realistic and made her that much more likeable. She wasn't perfect. Neither is Valerie, but good lord, pay attention while you're being bombed by birds!

I will read the third book in the series because I really enjoyed Angel in the first book. I'm hoping it is much better than this one.

I will start by saying that I got this book thanks to stuff my Kindle day so I have not read the 1st book in the series (and don't think I ever will because I know everything that happens thanks to this book). This was the first mer/maid/people whatever book I have ever read and it was a bit hard for me to get into.

It might be because I am missing some context but I have so many questions about how someone who has had a tail his entire life (I assume) can be so god in bed as a human...I am kind of confused about how a lot of things work in Atlantis and the undersea world but that might be my own fault for starting with the 2nd book of a series.

I do not think I will spend any money to read the final book, it wasn't bad but I don't think I can get past talking birds. The way the book was written just did not immerse me enough for me to enjoy it 100%.

I did like the story line and I liked Rod until the motel scene in bed...that's just sexual assault and I couldn't get past it. Valerie on the other hand just felt childish, she is supposed to be an almost 30 years old and yet she acted like a teenager when it came to her reactions to Rod.

Just an okay book for me and I will not read the rest of the series.

A Refreshing Read

I adored Wild Blue Under, the second book in Judi Fennell's Mer(maid) trilogy. This fast-paced and witty paranormal tale stars super-responsible Mer-stud Rod Tritone, heir to the undersea throne. Before Rod can be crowned king, he must fulfill an oceanic council order to return a Mer princess to her rightful place as governess of the South Pacific. Only problem is that princess, Valerie Demure, is: half human, lives in landlocked Kansas, isn't aware of her Mer half, is determined to stop indulging in her wanderlust behavior, and mistakenly believes she's allergic to the ocean.

It'll take all the charm Rod has, not to mention a set of legs, to join Valerie on land and convince her to travel with him to the seashore to collect "an inheritance." And if Rod's task isn't already difficult enough, an enemy lurks who would like nothing more than for Rod and Valerie to stay on land. Or die.

Not to worry. Rod has friends in high places, namely a hilarious seabird who nearly--but not quite--steals this never-a-dull-moment, twisty-turny show from two very likable, fun-loving characters.

Go ahead, jump in! The water's just right.

This is the second book in the series by Judi Fennell, with In Over Her Head being the first, and once again I really enjoyed it. For some reason, I had a hard time following what was happening in this book. I think I was trying to remember what happened in the first one and relate it to this one, but it wasn't necessary to do that.

I loved the characters. Valerie seemed very real and down-to-earth, Rod seemed like a hot Mer, and Livingston, the seagull, cracked me up! I once again loved the humor in the book and the way Judi Fennell played with everyday sayings and made them ocean-y. Instead of "That's it in a nut shell" we got "That's it in a conch shell." Instead of "Oh Lord", we get "Oh Hades" or "Oh Zeus" and many more.

I just love these books and their twist on a favorite fairy tale. I can't wait to read the next book, Catch of a Lifetime, when it comes out in February!

Well...this was an improvement over the first whose h had me gritting my teeth. OTOH, the H's steadfast refusal to explain anything until they got to the ocean (from Kansas?!) was irritating, and the h not putting him through the wringer for that, unbelievable. Yeah; someone appears, insists that I go to the ocean half a continent away, has a talking seagull with him, and won't explain the whole story while every bird in the state is dropping things on my car as we're going on said road trip? Can you say, pull into car wash, and say "we aren't leaving here until you tell me what the %$#! is going on"?

The irony is that Zeus and co deny him his fins when he DOES get to the water and attempts to demonstrate what he refused to tell; they just don't tell him that his being a stickler for the rules was why he (temporarily) lost his fins.

Valerie Dumere doesn't know it yet, but she's destined for greater things. Rod Tritone, next in line to be King to the Mer people walks into her life and turns it upside down. With his good looks and charm, Valerie can't help being attracted to him.

Wild Blue Under is a riveting tale. This story is filled with danger, romance and intrigue. Ms. Fennell has wowed me again with her world of under the sea characters. While I enjoyed the romance between Rod & Valerie, I loved the hilarious talking seagull, Livingston a lot more! In a genre of vampire, werewolves and demons this series is a breath of fresh air.

Thanks to Hachette books for sending me the second in Fennell's trilogy. To read what I thought of the first one and check out my interview with Judi Fennell, go here.

It just gets better and better in the Triton Trilogy. Lots of humor, imagination, and hot sexual tension amongst these pages. Not too much sex (but when it's there "by Gods" is it there!) and lots of adventure which will have you reminded of "The Little Mermaid" with it's talking birds and sea creatures. A fast read that will have you turning pages without realizing time has "swum" by so quickly.
