Ayu still can't give up on her love for Mayama, even though his relationship with Rika seems to be deepening. Nomiya's growing interest in Ayu might be a balm to her broken heart, but he's moving to Tottori for six months! Is Ayu cursed to suffer hopeless love affairs forever?
Chica Umino (Jap: 羽海野チカ) is a Japanese mangaka. Her real name is not disclosed, "Umino Chica" is a pen name.
She began work as a product designer and illustrator. Umino has a unique drawing style, listing Studio Ghibli amongst her influences, and her characters are remarkably well-developed.
Her most famous series to date is Hachimitsu to Clover (English name: Honey and Clover), a 'slice of life' manga series which debuted in 2000 in Shueisha's manga magazine, CUTiEcomic. The series won the Kodansha Manga Award in 2003 and was nominated for the Tezuka Culture Prize and an award from the Japan Media Arts Festival. It was also adapted into an animated television series in 2005, a live-action movie in 2006 and two individual live-action TV series in 2008.
Her ongoing recent series is Sangatsu no Lion (English name: March comes in like a lion), which began serialization in 2007. The series won several important prizes including: the Manga Taisho prize and Kodansha Manga Prize (general audience) in 2011, the Tezuka Osamushi Cultural Prize in 2014, and the Bunkacho Media Geijutsusai Manga bumon in 2021.
Umino has also provided the illustration for the 2009 anime series Eden of the East by Kenji Kamiyama, as well as 'Tobira o Akete' and the Glass Heart series, including 'Boukensha-tachi', 'Netsu no Shiro' and 'Love Way'.
Another Honey and Clover finished. I watched the movie from 2006 right before I read this one. I had good timing, the movie pretty much stops at the end of Volume 7. (It's not that good, if you're interested.) I liked this storyline but I get a little frustrated with the love triangles. How can you love a guy for six years that will never love you back? Oh, Yamada-san, please. Anyway, it's interesting seeing everyone changing but I'm getting impatient for everyone to end up in a REAL relationship!
Oh my Ra!! The unicorn thing!!! I nearly died from the hysterical laughing! I especially loved that they ended everything they said with "dammit"!! Oh lawd, hilarious!
Geez... poor Ayu :-( I understand how she must feel (not personally, but knowing someone pretty well who feels sort of the same way she does about someone). Though at the same time, I want her to have nothing to do with Nomiya. Because even though he said he loved her... I don't really know if I believe it. Umino-san may mean it as the manga-ka, but in terms of the storyline itself and what has been portrayed in the books, to me, it doesn't seem real. He still hasnt' done anything, in my opinion, that makes it seem like he's serious about her (even the drive all the way to Tokyo for 9 hours didn't cut it for me). I don't know... I guess I feel like there was just no natural progression for his character in his feelings for her. It seemed like he started out pursuing her as a joke to rile up Mayama (which is probably true), but there just doesn't seem to be anything to suggest it's still not that.
Yay for Mayama... but... ugh! I was really hoping Rika-san would go off and Mayama would realize how much he does care for Ayu :-( I never get my way with these relationships in manga! Lol!
But the unicorn thing was the best part of this entire volume. Oh, that and Yamazaki leaping about as he was showing Ayu the sights in Tottori to keep her there until Nomiya came back. That page was also amazing!
Honey and Clover does a brilliant job depicting daily life without making it boring. However, since the series is essentially just a prolonged stay with a group of friends, the audience does not get to see the fruition of all of the conflicts. Much like real life, very few things are cast in stone. With a relatively open ending, the audience is left insatiably wanting more. By the end of the series, it is hard not to relate with at least one character. It wouldn’t be surprising if you relate with all of them; they are just that human.
Tantas emoções nesse volume *-* Tá acabando e parece as coisas começaram a andar pra alguns personagens.
Ugh Mayama-Rika's working out pretty well. Poor Yamada's miserable and now scared to fall in love. (I can't believe I'm writing words like "scared to fall in love". I didn't expect this.)
Hagu's not on the spotlight lately, and Morita's still mysterious. Takemoto's now tough.
This a really, really good series. I started it a really long time ago (back when the Shojo Beat magazine was still running), but then never got around to continuing it. I picked it back up a little while ago, though, and it really reminded me how much I like this series.
Back when I first read it, I really liked the humor, and the characters. Now that it’s been so long (and I’ve mature), and now that I’m in college, I find that I can appreciate the college relations and the whole concept of finding yourself at that age, and the thoughtful moments. I’m enjoying it even more now.
Also, I love the art. It has a sketch-y look to it, and it’s just so pretty. The surprised and scared expressions are hilarious, and the scenery and sweet moments are beautiful. Umino is probably one of my favorite manga-ka’s, honestly. (It also helps that she was the artist of Eden of the East, an anime series that I really loved.)
Anyway. In this volume, there was some surprising development for both Ayu and Mayama.
I’m most surprised by Mayama’s, because I really wasn’t expecting his situation to go in that direction. I’m happy about it, though. Happy for him.
I really, really like Ayu, and feel bad for her. I also wasn’t quite expecting so much to come of her and Nomiya, but I’m less surprised, and really happy about it. He’s kind of adorable. I’m excited to see more of that.
We got a hint of something deeper going on with Shinobu. I wasn’t expecting that, and am very intrigued.
There wasn’t much of Takemoto or Hagu this time, sadly. I really want to see what happens with them, and Shinobu. Plus, I just really like all of them. The company characters are fun, and I do like them, but I love the original group most. (And, Takemoto’s arch of finding himself was the absolute best thing ever.)
I really, really like this series. It’s really funny, but it’s also very thoughtful. A bit nostalgic, sentimental. The band of characters are all very unique, and funny, and enjoyable. I’m close to the end of this series, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how it all wraps up.
Ebben a részben valamiért nagy szerepet kap a csuklás.

ayu still longs for mayama, although nomiya pursues her with renewed vigor. rika announces her plans to visit spain and finish the last project she worked on with her dead husband. she tells mayama he is coming with her. then she makes plans to go without him. then she changes her mind and makes plans for him to join her. then she goes by herself. that rika! the state of takemoto & hagumi's relationship remains uncertain.
*Spoiler Warnings* I was rather upset to find out that Riya was using Takumi...and Shinobu wasn't in it enough! I particularly liked when Shu threw him over the fence and all his money falls out...lol. I still gave it a 4 stars however because Nomiya is so...well, nommable. :D
Super story and character development. The art is lovely as well. a group of college students become friends and the story follows their individual progression as artists, friends, and at times, lovers.
The anime series only covers the first seven volumes so I finally entered unfamiliar territory. One love triangle has a resolution! This is such a beautiful series.
The series was very bittersweet, and perhaps if you don't want a lingering unfinished romance set during college years, among artists, it's probably not for you. But I really enjoyed the soul-searching of a young architect who finds solace in temple restoration, and a petite sculptor who wants nothing more than to paint gigantic landscapes and flowers instead. There are others, and they all have their own journeys. It's slice-of-life, and there are some meandering romances, but I don't think any of them is ever really resolved. There's also a fairly bizarre parody of Peter Jackson/George Lucas that transported the series into Sci-Fi territory just to give a breath of air... I think.
