Another fast paced read here, as Able takes on a CIA mission to bring home or kill a rogue former agent in Beirut. But things go balls up when it turns out to be Powell, their marine buddy from an earlier adventure, and he’s in the thick of things trying to stop an Iranian plot to kill the President with Soviet made rockets.
From there they head to Mexico, and run into a Soviet agents, who appear intent on stopping the assassination attempt for their own (nefarious) reasons.
I sort of questioned some of the motives and the actual bizarrely inept plan at the start of the novel. I mean, what’s the plan ?? Drive a rocket launcher mounted on a pickup into Washington and shoot the prez? From Mexico ?? But later the idea makes a sort of sick sense as we learn the terrorists we’re mere play dressing for the real attempt, upcoming in the next book.
That being said, the action was pretty good in this one, the boys go whole hog from the Middle East to Mexico, just like the cover states. There is also a cool sequence where Lyons meets up with the later armorer of Stony Man Konzaki’s former armorer crew to have his weapons checked out. We find out the Atchinson is actual a “Konzak” as Lyons starts to call it - it’s a super modified M-16 made to fire shotgun rounds. A cool nod to a lost comrade !
Able Team and the dreaded Soviets form an uneasy alliance, will it last the duration? The reason for the odd affiliation is that an American undercover agent in Lebanon is one of a few survivors of an ambush by Iranians. The C.I.A. wants him to come home and tell all he knows. He decides to decline and investigate on his own.
Able Team enters the picture to either bring him home, or wipe him out. The thing is that Able Team has had dealings with the agent before, and the trust him. The Team switches their mission objectives. That mission is to stop Iranians from blowing up the President of the U.S.A. with high powered rockets. The weird thing is, the KGB want's to stop the killing! Why?
This goes from The Middle East, to Mexico City on a thrill a minute ride. I would of gave it another star, but we tread over a lot of familiar people and scenes from just a couple of books ago. I'd like some new enemies with different settings. Still, it won't let you down. By the way, it ends with the story wide open for a part two!
A weaker volume in the series, it's part of a bigger storyline thats ok but this fails to really add anything. You find out early on that there are more important forces and basically this whole book is just after bait. It ends abruptly with a ton of loose ends. Does have a lot of action and a couple appearances by past characters in the series is fun. I give it a 3 but more like a 2.5, really is one of the weaker ones I've read.
Can't recommend, its ok if you read the several books before but as just an overall stand alone it makes little sense.
