Väiksesse, korrumpeerunud seltskonna poolt kindla käega juhitud linna saabub rändurisaabastes ja laiaäärse kübaraga võõras, kes väidab end olevat pärandusest pettusega ilma jäetud noore naise vend. Ja korraga hakkabki kõik muutuma... Raamat ühendab kaht ühendamatut - spaghetti-westerni karmi esteetikat ja poeetilist, justkui mitu tolli maast kõrgemal hõljuvat keelt, mis ometi sobivad omavahel hästi kokku.

Trečioji Rein Raud knyga, labiausiai man patikusi. Esu vesternų gerbėja todėl šis egzistencialistinis spageti karma vesternas buvo lyg parašytas tiksliai man. :) Perskaičiau vos per dieną, nes puslapių turi vos vos per 100. Tačiau tai nėra kokia parodija, o rimtas veikalas, už originalumą 10balų! Faina atpažinti pagrindinius žanro elementus: bejėgė auka, vienišas svieto lygintojas, blogiečiai, siautėjantys nebaudžiami, bet galiausiai sulaukiantys atpildo, femme fatale ir mylimoji-trumpam. Pabaigoje rašytojas net surašęs dainas, kurioms skambant, galime įsivaizduoti čia pavaizduotas moteris :)

a cinematic western translated from the estonian? yup. and every bit as good as it sounds. the first novel from rein raud to be translated into english, the brother (vend) is a short, allegorical tale of an out-of-town stranger come to set things right. raud, in an interview upon the book's original release, noted, "i at least always try to only write books that i believe the world is lacking." the world was lacking the brother, but, thankfully, isn't any longer.
"love springs from the ability to prefer imperfection over perfection," brother said. "from you understanding the shortcomings and flaws of your parents, your homeland, your children, and someone dear to you; naturally while wishing that those imperfections didn't exist, but still never replacing them with anyone or anything else, so what that those things might be flawless."

Labai patiko!

I received a review copy of this title from Open Letter via Edelweiss.

Karma, comeuppance, what comes around goes around. There are many terms and phrases for the universal of idea of cause and affect. The Brother is a fast-paced, hard-hitting, short book that uses the plot structure of a western as an allegory for demonstrating the balance of good and evil in the world. The author himself has described the book as “a spaghetti western told in poetic prose, simultaneously paying tribute to both Clint Eastwood and Alessandro Baricco.” The plot of this book is a clever structure for the philosophical and existential ideas that the author explores. When a mysterious man, simply known as Brother, arrives in the unnamed town it is a dark and stormy day and the weather reflects the turmoil that three shady and crooked men have caused for the townspeople.

Brother finds Laila, his long-lost sister and explains why they have never met. Brother simply states that his sudden appearance is caused by his desire to fulfill the dying wish of their father by helping Laila out of a tough time. How Brother became privy to this information no one knows but the men who have swindled Laila out of her home and her inheritance are very nervous at Brother’s mysterious presence. Brother’s imposing figure, with his large boots and long, black overcoat certainly cause these three men a fair amount of consternation, but it is also evident that their own guilty consciences are driving their actions.

Laila appears, at first, to be a sad and lonely woman whose entire life has revolved around an ancient family villa where she lived with her mother. She describes her childhood as one in which she spend trying to be invisible. At school she realized very quickly that she was much smarter than the other students but feigned stupidity so that she would not stand out among the others. She felt that being an honors student and winning awards would draw negative attention to her in the form of jealousy so she maintained average grades and a low profile. Laila seems to have been the perfect victim of the notary, the banker and the lawyer.

But Laila doesn’t act the part of a downtrodden victim; she enjoys her new life working in an antique shop and losing the villa allows her to break free and escape from her past. As Laila’s life gets better and becomes happier with a newfound brother, a new job and eventually a new place to live, the three crooks in town experience a significant decline in their own fortunes. These three men all blame Brother for their streak of bad luck even though Brother has in no way tried to exact any vengeance for the crimes against Laila. Brother becomes the symbol for the forces in the universe that divvy out proper fate and just punishments.

But just like in life, people are not always so easily placed in a good guy or bad guy category and there is some gray area. Willem, the banker’s assistant, is tasked with finding out who Brother is and if, in fact, he is Laila’s biological brother. All of the evil characters in the story are known simply by their profession, such as the notary, the banker and the lawyer. The good people or the victims, like Laila, are given real names. It appears that Willem, as the banker’s henchman would fit into the evil category. But in the end he does have more of a conscience than the other villains and finds some redemption. In westerns the bad guys wear black hats and the good guys wear white hats and I think Raud’s use of names or occupations in place of names is a subtle way of using the same type of imagery to point us to the heroes and the villains.

And the title “Brother” is neither a true name or an occupation but, to me, it seemed more of a term of endearment. Raud doesn’t even use an article and write “The Brother” but simply calls his hero “Brother.” My twin nephews who are eight years-old oftentimes call each other or refer to each other as “Brother”; I have always found it so sweet because they especially use it when they are helping each other or are being protective of one another. Similarly, Raud’s uses “Brother” as a title to set the same tone of kind helper and hero for Laila’s long-lost sibling.

This appears to be the first book of Raud’s translated into English and I was so thoroughly impressed with his language, imagery and characters. I hope more of his works will be translated into English and published in the U.S.

This book had been on my to-buy list for ages. It had actually been on there for so long that I can't even remember how I learned of it. I ended up ordering it online with some gift cards I received for the holidays, and whoo boy, was it underwhelming. I don't know exactly what I was hoping for, but it certainly wasn't this.

It's supposed to be a revenge slash comeuppance story... where an estranged half-brother learns that his sister was somehow tricked out of her family inheritance and he finds her and attempts to set things right. I guess I was anticipating some bang em up, squash em down violence? Or some real manipulative mind game sort of stuff? But nah. It was just a slow burn that seemed to really go nowhere.

It is a pretty book though, with a really simple cover and lime green inner cover pages and spine.

Oh well. There went a couple bucks down the drain.
Sigh.

Suvilast huupi haaratud raamat osutus toredaks lugemiseks.

Lugu ise on paras müsteerium.

The Brother by Rein Raud is a short morality tale told in a clever way. The characters are simplified, and it is their actions (good or bad) that are the author's focus. Characters who have swindled Laila out of her inheritance feel karma's wrath in the end, and, rather surprisingly, Laila begins to develop as an independent individual who might just be able to survive on her own in the future without being exploited and abused. Hopefully, more books from this author will be translated into English!

When I saw the description of The Brother (a spaghetti western in poetic prose), I wasn't sure what to expect. Once I got into the story, the description mad perfect sense. You get glimpses of what's happening and understand what's going on without a lot of explanation. It's unlike anything I have ever read. Really enjoyed it!

I was really intrigued by the idea of an Estonian spaghetti western. A nice quick read that was incredibly well written and utterly thought provoking. We see characters and their fortunes shift by the mere presence of the Brother alone. We never actually see him exact any revenge so it’s left to the reader to fill in the gaps.

Written in the style of a spaghetti western. The author is Estonian and I enjoyed the European perspective of a western genre.
Philosophical passages and dialogue written with purpose and perfectly conveyed the novella’s storyline.

“ Inimesed jagunevad. On neid, kes teevad ise teistele liiga, ja on neid, kellele tehakse; nende viimaste seas on osa selliseid, keda rünnata olekski justkui aus, sest neil on küllalt jõudu, et tagasi lüüa, ja siis on teisi, kes omas vastikuses lausa kutsuvad enda vastu astuma, sest nendele tehtav halb pole midagi enamat kui suurt tasakaalu taastav kättemaks. ”[6]

“ Mul pole muud soovi kui suuta maailmast läbi libiseda ilma temasse ühtki jäävat jälge jätmata. ”[11]

“ Aeg ei möödu kunagi mõttetult, vastas vend. - Aeg ladestub. Me kogume teda endasse, milline ta ka poleks. ”[72]

“ Ma tulin su juurde nagu vasikas tapale. Või ei. Nagu liblikas tulle. Mitte ilma tahteta, vaid tahtega, mis on täiuslikult allutatud. ”[75]

“ Sest kuidas armastada teisi, selle olen läbi valu ja vaeva ära õppinud, aga oskus olla armasstatud on mulle ikkagi jäänud kättesaamatuks. ”[77]

Labai plona, labai greitai suskaitoma knyga.

This short novel is dubbed a "spaghetti western" by its Estonian author. Although I have seen movies of that genre, I've never really studied them as a fan so I may have missed some of the references. (There is a brief mention in the acknowledgements for those of us who missed things.) But we used to watch them at parties in the 1980's. Maybe those viewings left something buried in my sub-conscious because I really enjoyed this book without really knowing why. Take away any knowledge of "spaghetti westerns"and it is still a darned good read.

My copy through a paid subscription to Open Letter Books.

A strange man arrives in town, claiming to be the brother of a woman whose mother recently passed. She was swindled out of her inheritance. Financially wrecked, she pushes through with life, but the man claiming to be her brother has other plans.

I picked this up because I heard pretty good things about it, and I've never read a book from Estonia so I thought it'd be cool to check out.

This is a self-described spaghetti western and I think that is a good label for it. It's told through short vignettes that really feel like scenes of a movie.

The Brother by Rein Raud is a 115 page novella that reads like poetry in its sparsity and strength in minimalism, which makes the words that are present that much more powerful. Translated from Estonian, I can only imagine how much more impactful the original would be in its native language. The Brother is something like karma personified and is worth not just reading, but re-reading. Thanks go to Goodreads for my copy.

I could tell that I was not going to enjoy this from the first couple of pages, but it is so short I pressed on and skimmed the rest of this short novella to see if there was anything interesting to me. There was not. I found it incredibly dull and lifeless, with clumsy writing and dead characters who all sound the same and speak in long diatribes that read as very false. It's an artificial little book with no interesting characters or plot.

Lugu, millele tasub pühendada just üks jõulueelne õhtupoolik koos küünlavalguse ja sooja tekiga.

Fine as far it goes. I'm not sure that the translation from Estonian did it any favours. Equally, I wouldn't be a fan of the best written ambiguous quasi western narrative. It's a quirky curiosity that didn't leave me feeling that I need to get to grips with the rest of the Estonian canon.

I don't know what it is about Rein Raud's rather stoic style, but I keep envisioning the movie versions of his novels. In the case of The Reconstruction, they would go toe-to-toe. Methinks that with The Brother, however, you could make a better movie than what the text provides.
