About the author

E.D. Baker made her international debut in 2002 with The Frog Princess, which was a Texas Lone Star Reading List Book, A Book Sense Children's Pick, a Florida's Sunshine State Readers List pick & a 2006 Sasquatch Book Award nominee. The Frog Princess inspired the Disney's Princess and the Frog!


E. D. Baker was born in Buffalo, New York and spent most of the next eighteen years in the Town of Tonawanda with her older brother and her parents. She married her husband while in college, and had two children a few years after graduating from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. When her son was four, the family moved to the state of Maryland. With two young children at home, E.D. worked part time in her husband’s business and took writing classes at the local community college. She continued taking writing classes after the birth of her second daughter, but when she and her husband divorced, she went back to school and entered the SIMAT (School Immersion Masters in the Art of Teaching) program at Johns Hopkins University. After graduating, she taught fifth grade until her parents’ health began to fail. Her son had already graduated from college when E.D. and her daughters moved north to be closer to her parents. Having gained a new perspective on what is important in life, E.D. decided that it was time to believe in herself and devoted her time to writing. Her first book, The Frog Princess, was published in 2002. E.D. has written 25 books to date and has no plans to quite writing anytime soon.

Currently E. D. Baker lives on a small farm in Maryland where she and her family breed Appaloosa horses. They also have dogs, cats and goats.

The story, No Place for Magic, is an echanting fairy tale. This book is the fourth in the series of the Frog Princess. Princess Emma has finally mastered her magic, but she soon discovers that she cannot always rely on it. When taking a visit to the parents of her soon-to-be wed (Eadric), she enters in a new quest, in which her magic cannot be used. This tale tells of the young couple, who have great determination, strong courage, and an even greater love for each other.

This has been one of the best series I have ever read. E.D. Baker makes you automatically fall in love with the main characters, Emma and Eadric. Ever since the first book, I have been hooked. I feel that these books have really encouraged me and helped me regain the wonderful desire to read. This book has made me want to check out the other upcoming books, such as Salamandar Spell, Dragon Princess, and Dragon Kiss. I look forward to continuing in this fabulous series.

This one was ok. The series goes on for several more books about Emma and Eadric’s daughter, but this one didn’t make me feel the need to continue the series. The second book is still my favorite.

Hmm. Well, this wasn't a bad little book, but not great either. Its strongest point is the conclusion to the Emma/Eadric romance subplot (we finally get to see their wedding!) But aside from that it was a pretty mixed bag content wise.

The trolls were funny, though their resolution, clearly intended to be amusing was anticlimactic. The vampire bit entertained me, however all the other little stops this story makes on the way to the trolls did not. The continued Lil/Garrid romance still is weird and uncomfortable, and unneeded.

Also, I question some of the fairytale magic morality in this book. The spell Emma enacts to make Branston unable to leave his mother's side was excessive. It reminds me of a similar spell, shown as a negative, in Ella Enchanted. Here it's just a laugh and a serves him right kind of thing. And though Emma eventually takes the spell back, she's still using it as a kind of magical blackmail so...yeah...

Tales of the Frog Princess, book 4.

Emma and Eadric are ready to get married, but first they have to get his parents' approval. Eadric's mother does not approve of magic. She hates it so much that she won't even allow Emma to help rescue her younger son, Bardston, who has been kidnapped by trolls. THis is probably the weakest link in the series, but it was still funny enough to keep me reading. I just love Emma. She is a great character.

I have mixed feelings about this series. I love the adventures and Emma's quick wit, but not a fan of Eadric, her beau. He worries so much about "protecting" her like she's helpless, cares too much about food, and just says/does things that are a bit misogynistic to me. But, overall it's a cute series.

I loved this last book in this series. I didn’t realize it was the last! The next books are next generation. I am really sad. Emma has to learn that she is just as awesome without magic. It’s hard when she has come to rely so much on magic to not use it to solve all her problems. I liked this challenge. I like the newest magical creatures introduced. As well as some hilarious new witches. Emma and Eadric are just so adorable. I seriously connect with Eadric and his love for food. They are so protective of each other and are really good at communicating how they feel. Even when they have disagreements they talk it out and express their love! So many fun moments with all our favorite characters and couples.
The narrator Katherine Kellgren is Queen. I love all her audiobooks. (She did enola holmes, my lady Jane, and the very nearly honorable league of pirates too).

SPOILERS and book notes:
Emma transforms into a green dragon to get around so often that everyone is used to it now. Ghost grandpa is moving in with now nice witch grandma in her gingerbread house! How cute! Eadric likes eating the frosting roof so Emma needs to help repair it lol. The mom (Queen) is being dumb about magic… and about Eadric…. And about her dad being a ghost…. I love what GMA said to the Queen: "You're taking her side, just the way you did when we were girls." Grandmother nodded. "Yes, I am, but I take your side when you aren't around and your sister questions something that you do.” “I always give my girls the benefit of the doubt.” Eadrics parents don’t like Emma. She is a “evil witch”. Awww Haywood and Grassina had their wedding ceremony in the swamp!!! I love this. So simple and beautiful. the mom complained the whole time though lol: “as long as you both shall live," said the priest. Glancing pointedly at Queen Olivene and the ghost of my grandfather, my mother added, "And after they die, too, if they're anything like my parents." And I love what Eadric says: “"I'd like a simple wedding like this. I could talk to the priest after the ceremony and ask him to stick around to do ours.” But Emma wants his parents blessing before they marry! Jorge escaped the dungeons!! Lil the bat and Garrid, a vampire, was her mate. Hehe “"Could you put this away for me?" Eadric grinned. "As long as you pay the fee." "All right. I'll even pay in advance." Hooking my finger into the neck of Eadric's tunic, I pulled him toward me and kissed him squarely on the lips.” Then coral the mermaid comes and visits them and asks if they will watch the annoying crab Shelton. Some cool thoughts from Emma about what makes ourselves confident and feel valued. That’s why we base our value on our identity as a child of God. “I was irritated that no one seemed to think that I could get along without my magic. It was true that it had become an important part of my life, but it wasn't all there was to me. I was a lot more confident than I used to be and more capable and … I realized that most of what I valued about myself was tied to my magic one way or another. If I couldn't use it, would I be as confident or as capable?” Ralf is back! The little dragon! I’m Eadrics kingdom they don’t like magic so she needs to help without them knowing she is helping haha. Help fight the sea monster. Eadric defeated it though. Eadric is seriously the cutest: “I was fighting to keep my eyes open when he lifted the flap to my tent. Swaying on my feet, I gazed bleary-eyed through the opening, too tired to take another step. Eadric swung me into his arms and kissed me on the cheek as he carried me inside, setting me on the bed in the corner.” All the maidens in the land are so mad he is off the market. The 4 witches are hilarious!! Remember Oculura (the eyeballs) and Dyspepsia (the grump). Now there is Klorine (she speaks like an echo (loud and with awkward pauses) bc she lives in a cave with only an echo for company lol) and Ratinki (the oldest and smelliest). It’s hard in Emma’s dragon form to ever want to change back. In her dragon brain she can’t think of a single advantage of turning back into a human. All except Eadric. He is the love of her life no matter what form she took. So she changes back for him: “then I thought about my dear, sweet Eadric, who never failed to hold my hand when he thought I might be frightened, who always tried to come between me and danger even when I didn't need him to, and who cared how I felt about nearly everything. Eadric was kind and strong and brave and honorable—the kind of knight that other knights only claimed to be. He was also the love of my life, no matter what form I happened to take. Although staying a dragon meant that I'd be free to do whatever I wanted to for the rest of my life, I already had something even better waiting for me in a tent, snoring so loudly that I could almost believe I heard him from far away. I could be a dragon now and then, but I knew that I could never leave Eadric for long.” She fought werewolves by hearding them with her fire and picking them up by their tails and relocating them. Now they have to face a drunk giant lol. Bradston (Eadrics younger snotty brother) was kidnapped by the Queen of the trolls. They are going to rescue her! Poor Emma. But she has Eadric! “Back home in Greater Greensward I was respected more for being the Green Witch than I'd been for being a princess. Here I had the feeling that being a princess was the only thing that kept them from throwing stones at me. When I turned to say something to Eadric, his jaw was set and he looked angry. It seemed he had heard them, too.” And he has to guard her from his own soldiers bc of this: “"Trolls!" I said, throwing off my blanket. Grabbing Shelton, my shoes, and my cloak, I slipped under the tent flap and would have stumbled over Eadric if there hadn't been a full moon that night to light up the clearing. He was sleeping on the ground in front of my tent, his hand on Ferdy's scabbard. Knowing him, he was probably there to guard me.” I love this speech from Emma! “"Is this what you think our marriage is going to be like? You'll make all the major decisions and tell me what to do? Grassina and Haywood have made all their decisions together for the past few months, and they weren't even married yet. I thought married people were partners who helped each other. If we're going to get married, you'll have to understand that I love you and I'll never let you walk into danger alone. I want you to be safe just as much as you want me to be. I'm going to help you in any way I can, and if that means going into a troll mountain, so be it.” The trolls have a magic seeing ball! “It locates the witch it was meant to find as soon as she uses her magic.” Bc of this she can’t use magic on their rescue mission! Oooo the mystery: “Someone made a magic-seeing ball to see me. To focus the ball, you have to include something that belongs to the person you're focusing it on. What could they have used that was mine?" I love how amazing Eadric is with making her feel good. And that he comes up with non magical solutions to their problems. And that she thanks him by kissing him hehe. She had turned them invisible to escape the trolls, but since she doesn’t want to use magic to alert the trolls again they have to remain invisible through out their journey! They can only see each other if they are touching, so they have to hold hands! Hehe Eadric had to save her from drowning but she had to use magic to make them visible again! “Grabbing the back of my gown in one fist, he dragged me to the log and held me until I'd draped myself over it. "Thank you!" I gasped. "You don't know how happy I am to see you." "About as happy as I am to see you," he said, and he kissed me. "Don't you two ever let up?" grumbled Shelton from his perch atop the log.” They ran into a cockatrice den!! “They have the head, legs, and wings of a rooster and the body and tail of a snake. They're so ugly that you'll turn to stone if you look one in the eye. They can even shatter rock and wither plants with their ugliness."” They are only scared of weasels. And toads hatch them by taking yokless eggs from a rooster and burry them in a dung heap. They also met a friendly nice banshee in an abandoned castle. (Banshee warn people they are going to die soon) “When Eadric pulled me into his arms and held me tight, I could feel that he was shaking. "That's such a relief!" he murmured into my hair. "I thought she was here to make one of her announcements. The last time I saw a banshee was the day my grandfather died from a hunting accident. A banshee came before we knew that his injuries were serious. When I saw her tonight, I thought it meant that I was going to lose you. I couldn't bear that, Emma." He kissed me on the lips before I could reply, a tender kiss that banished the last of any despair I'd felt from the banshee.” Now they are being attacked by vampires in a room but they have to incite them in. Lil sees her beloved vampire Garrid so let’s him in! They are married! I didn’t know that! And so he introduces her to all his family vampires! And they have a celebration haha. They are too cute. They found the troll queen delirious and he has 4 heads! Each with different names and personalities and control different parts of the body. She found the magic finding ball and it was her hair in it! She thinks Jorge got it somehow… but there is another one! They found Bradstan and he had the chicken pox and gave it to the trolls lol. The trolls kidnapped him but found him soooo annoying they are glad to be rid of him lol. And Emma felt bad for the trolls! She cursed him that he can’t leave his mother side until his 21st bday. Awww Eadrics and Emma’s wedding is so beautiful!! All their favorite people are there! Even rAlf the dragon!! The witches! But the fairies might cause mischief… but he was the handsomest man in the room. The three building blocks of a good marriage are love, loyalty, and friendship! Awwwww: “Eadric squeezed my hand once more and I returned the pressure, knowing that all three building blocks were already ours. The priest hadn't said anything that we didn't already know. Eadric must have thought so, too, because he winked at me and grinned. After that I missed half of what the priest said because I was looking into Eadric's eyes and remembering how they had looked on the day we met. He had been a frog and I'd thought he was obnoxious. Back then I never would have imagined that I would marry him, or that I could love anyone so much.” And then they were married!!! Eek! But then trolls attacked the castle. Jorge and Olebald the wizard with the pet metoo are behind this. They promised the troll queen she could marry bradston. Now they want Eadric bc bradstons so annoying! But they need to kill Emma first bc she is married to him! And then Emma transformed into her green dragon to defend him! And she battled the troll as a dragon! Lesssss gooooo. And when she won by tricking her into thinking that Eadric could transform into a dragon too (but really it was just an illusion). Then Emma told her about an available prince named Jorge and how to find him lol. Now Eadrics parents like her! That ending so adorable: “"I can tell you what you mean to me with just one word." "Let me guess," I said, smiling up at him. "Maybe I make you happy because you no longer have to enter kissing contests to find the best kisser? Do I bring excitement into your life because I can whisk you away to exotic lands on my magic carpet? Or do you find me delightful because I can conjure food whenever you're hungry?" "No, that's not … Wait, what was that last one?" I laughed and shook my head. "Never mind. So tell me in one word, what do I mean to you?" "That's easy," said Eadric. "Everything!"

Honestly this is just a cute, little series that I read during my down time because every once in a while everyone needs a bit of a "fluff" read. This really does not take much thought which is in no way anything against the books! They are just written for a younger age bracket than I am in but I enjoy reading books of all age groups.

This book is up there with the Frog Princess, while I wasn't thrilled with the other books in the series, I apreciated the attempt at a *lack of magic*. It came through with the genuine Emmma we originally met, and doesn't transform every problem into a little something magic can fix.

this was one of the shortest books in the series but draaaaagged on forever lol. tbh i enjoyed this book the least. the adventures were cute, and the a couple of the newer characters were charming. there was also a scene involving vampires that actually gave me the creeps!🦇

however, just like all of the books, Baker has to joke about Eadric kissing other girls for no reason other than to make Emma mad/jealous lol? i also found the spell Emma used on her mother in law to be pretty icky and manipulative - and it honestly just confirmed her mother in law’s fears. also Emma didn’t learn a damn thing in this book lol. the point of this adventure was to show that Emma DIDN’T have to rely on magic for everything, but she still takes every opportunity to use it? the troll queen kidnapping Eadric’s brother was also really pointless. :/

i feel like this would have been much better if it was given time to explore his kingdom/culture and family, and why they hate witches so much (also love how they instantly were ok with Emma being a witch once she brought Eadric’s bro back like???) i don’t mind the adventures but the plot line with Jorge just dragged on for way too long. sometimes you just gotta take the L, bro

I liked the book No Place for Magic but I can't give it five stars because I kind of think that the book just droned on and on. Also I don't exactly like it when characters in the book act like brats and stop the plot from continuing. (Hence why I dislike Queen Frazzela whose name just sounds like the word frazzled.) But the book was refreshing. Instead of Emma using magic to fix everything she was going to a place where magic was looked down upon so she couldn't just say a spell and make everything good. Excellent. It must've made her mother so proud that she didn't cast a spell every ten minutes. One thing about the book that was a bit of the laugh was Li'l and Garrid. Poor Garrid. Obviously mood swings affect bats too cause Li'l's moods were swinging like a pendulum. It was kind of annoying but it hid a message for some people who like to interpret the weirdest of things from books. Sometimes girls can be very suspicious and assume things that aren't true but it doesn't make them stupid. Just paranoid at times.

I was between a three star and a four star while reading this. At the beginning I was sure I would give it a four star, but I felt that the ending dragged on just a little too long. I also was a bit confused with the whole troll plot, the trolls spoke a weird broken English which I felt was unnecessary and made their storyline just that much more confusing. That confusion could have just been me being uninterested in the troll parts of the story. If the trolls weren't there it would have been a better book.
I did like the scenes of Eadric and Emma travelling with their friends, and I enjoyed the interactions Emma had with her parents and Eadric's. I wish the story had stayed there.
Overall it was a fun read and I did like this series a lot. I don't plan on reading the others except maybe 9 at some point just because I'm not super interested in Emma and Eadric's daughter, but if I ever see the books somewhere maybe I would pick them up just for the fun factor. If I were a kid I'd probably want to finish the whole series.

I really enjoyed this one! It pulled me in from beginning to end and I loved the difference this time with Emma having to try and use her magic as little as possible. Emma and Eadric travel to his Kingdom to hopefully help change his parents, especially his mother's, view of Emma as she hates magic and so is now against the marriage. Eadric is planning to marry Emma anyways but they go so his parents can get to know her better and see who she actually is. When they show up, they find out that Eadric's younger brother is missing and head off to go find him. They figure out that the trolls are holding him and what an adventure that starts. They have quite the journey in order to get there and the trolls are already after Emma at this point and Emma has to figure out how to get around things without magic. They have to overcome other obstacles as well and learn to trust each other and work together on a different level again. The story was very well done and very enjoyable and entertaining.
The narrator did a good job with the characters and story and bringing it to life.

I love these books!! They are the perfect “kids first fantasy” series.

Don't come into these books expecting a perfect magic system, it's very folklore-esque, the witches do the kind of magic you'd imagine as a kid. You don't get a list of what magic users can and can't do, but it's not so OP that the story gets boring.

In every review of this series I have to gush about its main couple. He is the quintessential Knight in shining armor. He fights monsters and wants to protect her. She is a princess, and a powerful witch. He is not emasculated by her ability to take care of herself. He jumps in and talks about protecting her, but it's 100% because he loves her and has got her back. They have different skill sets that make them the perfect team.

I'm disappointed once again by this series that I used to enjoy as a child. Once again we find Emma as a hyper-competent character in a world and surrounded by people who are under-competent. Yes, she isn't "supposed to" use her magic but she still does. She has to save everyone's butts. And there isn't enough difficulty or grit in the story to make Emma really work for anything. Emma is also hyper-special and it grates on me more with every passing book.

Also, a qualm I have with all the books but the first one - this magic system is poorly defined, inconsistent, and has no checks and balances. I'm not asking for high level fantasy here.

Also, what happened to Edric? I feel like he changed a whole lot for this book. This boy in this book is waving a few red flags (and one moment of a solid green one - yay for that).

Overall, yeah. I'm disappointed in this series. I won't be continuing.

Ahoy there mateys! I found this middle grade series because of Katherine Kellgren who is my favorite audiobook narrator ever. I was also excited because I love Frog Princess retellings. This series has nine books which follow Emma, the frog princess, and other members of her family. Emma kisses the frog and turns into a frog herself!

I absolutely loved books 1 to 5, thought books 6 to 8 were just okay, and really enjoyed book 9. I love Emma who is not your typical princess. I love her quirky family. There are lots of fun side characters like fairies, snakes, ghosts, crabs, dragons, mermaids, trolls, etc. These are romances in that the princesses find their true loves but with twists. For example, one prince is a frog, one is an otter, and one is a dragon. There is another couple that is a typical bat and an vampire. The books are sweet and a lot of fun. I don't own the whole series but I could see myself listening to these again in the future. Arrr!

I've been continuing to read through this series at my ten year old's insistence, and they are actually pretty good. In this one, Emma, the main character learns that her strength in magic is not always the cure for every problem. As I read, I found myself reflecting on how often I allow myself to rest in my strengths in a way that I was never meant to.

At any rate, this really finishes up the story arc in my mind, and it's a neat and tidy finish, but the series still looks like it has several more books in it, so I look forward to seeing what's ahead. . . Not until next year though because Emalee isn't getting the rest of the series until Christmas :-)

Oy. Eadric has to learn that Emma can not only protect herself, but him and the others as well. Even when she doesn't use magic to do so. He is so patronizing and annoying. And too enthusiastic about food. And rather dim, actually.

They're teens. Too young to be actually getting married. I know; it's the done thing in this world. But I hope young readers don't get the wrong idea. Well, I do know that when I read fairy tales as a girl I thought 16 was too young, but 18 or 19 was fine. And guess what I learned? Twenty is too young; my first marriage failed because we were too young.

Ok, this series is stereotypical fairy tail stuff (witches, fairies, dragons, trolls, giants, spells, curses, castles, men trying to save damsels in distress, etc.). But I had to give it 5 stars for the reading/acting skill on the audiobook. I find it hard to believe it is only ONE person doing all these voices, but there's only one name credited! And she actually SINGS the singing parts--like the singing sword, & a drunken giant! (At least I think the giant was in this one. Might've been the last one.)

This book was okay. It was good enough to keep me interested but I’m not gonna lie, I found the order of these books really confusing and just kind of strange. There appeared to be no rhyme or reason to these books, but I guess that’s kind of why I enjoyed it. They were different and out there but that made it more interesting. It was an okay book, a good time filler for 10 - 12 year olds.

This book was really great and do you know why it was really great? Because in the end she [spoiler alert] uses magic and a little after the big Troll Queen fight, the people who didn't really like magic, she said, "I think we might need a little bit of magic in out town sometimes, and then Eidrich interrupted and said, "and a very talented witch" or something like that.
