Less sensationalist and trashy than it might have been, this is still a fairly fun read. There’s more pseudoscience and less action than I would have liked but it has its moments.

Time travel fantasy - a Texas oil company sponsors a secret commando group to go back to 1836 to win the battle of the Alamo so Mexico would become part of Texas. First half of the book is about recruiting about 3 dozen members for the team, focusing on a female Vietnam war veteran and the battle-worn leader of the commando team; they eventually have a love affair. Second half of the book is when the commandos go back to 1836 - the time travel is not explained other than things start spinning around and a few seconds later they are outside the Alamo in February 1836. They use modern weapons to join the Texans to defeat the Mexican army, but then have second thoughts about changing history so they leave the Alamo. After their departure General Santa Anna orders a final assault and the Alamo falls. The commandos remain in the 19th century and live out their lives in anonymity. It turns out later that their trip was going to be one-way anyway since the process of returning to the present results in death, which the commandos did not know, so they made the right choice to stay in 1836. Far-fetched and light weight, but a good way to pass the time.

It's a decent action, historical fiction of its decade. Not very big by standards of this decade but still something that would interest readers who like a mix of scifi and alternate history. I was in my very twenties when i bought my first copy, in a rush and easily bored so I didn't put a lot of energy into reading it so I lost interest. A couple if months ago I found it again on amazon, purchased and read it complete. It's a sit down book for the fact that the more attention is needed when reading to it a better effect.
