Okay, so I'm a fan of Ms. Dugan, but I'm only a third of the way into this book and I already love it. This is coming from a 20 year practitioner: I don't agree with her 100%, though I'd say I'm 98.5% on the same metaphorical page as she. I adore her practical approach to The Craft, and I love that every book I pick up of hers, this one included, teaches me something new. So many other authors and books spout off the same old status quo stuff, but Ellen Dugan is an inspirational, creative maven. I would - and will - highly recommend this book to both newcomers and to experienced witches. I can't wait to share this book with my Circle!
Yeah, this author is not for me. I am going to post a link to a ranty review I wrote. I read the rest of the ebooks I have of hers, and sad to say it never improves. That is why I took forever to review this, and I didn't mention the other books, because meh and blah.
Ellen Dugan just gets better and better with every book she puts out! This book is a must-have for the benefit of having a wealth of correspondence information at hand! Ellen stresses the importance of knowing your correspondences in order to pack the most powerful and effective punch in your spellwork and to have as much of these correspondences memorized so as to create a greater ease in your own practice. An absolutely wonderful book!
About 10 years ago, I went on an Ellen Dugan book buying frenzy. I have no regrets, as the material helped me tremendously and I still have a couple of books on my shelf that I am enjoying.
This is Ellen Dugan's Book of Shadows, which offers you a chapter packed full of info for each day of the week. Unfortunately, while I found some of the material useful, I didn't really connect with the rest, which is a completely personal thing. I was never really into what I call "Witchy Math" and preferred to act intuitively. This book is also Wiccan-based, which doesn't hold a connection for me.
Having said that, I did refer to it from time to time and found what I did use to be extremely helpful. But I feel it's time to release it back into the wild and make room on my shelves for a few books that are more in alignment with where my path has led me.
A very quick read, but not necessarily one I liked. This is a good one for Wiccans and those who are more apt at using rhyme and riddle in their magic. I'm not that kind of person and personally don't like the very theatrical witchcraft that you often find in Llwellyn books.
That being said, it does have some absolute basic information about the days of the week and correspondences. It's a good building block for baby witches looking to learn more and give themselves direction. As someone whose a little more advanced and has been practicing for a while, this wasn't really my speed or cup of tea.
I read it cover to cover in a couple of days. . Then enjoyed dipping in and out. A guide to everyday magic using daily correspondences, a fun way to begin the course on witchcraft without being too heavy or complicated. Simple spellwork and easy to follow instructions. The author encourages everyone to follow their own way of doing things and her ways are a guide, a could do, not a should do.
Reading an Ellen Dugan book is like sitting in the living room of a close friend, tarot cards on the table, books of shadows on our lap, swapping stories and comparing correspondences to daily magick. Entertaining, real, and informative, Ellen Dugan delivers another must-read. Five stars across the board.
I really enjoyed this book, I really honestly believe that this is a great book that is fantastic for new witches. It's a great idea and gives good ideas for people who are newly interested in this field of life. I really enjoyed the idea of having a different spell, a different God or Goddess explanation for each day of the week. I know that a lot of other readers have written about they wish the author (Ellen Dugan) had talked more about other Gods/Goddess/Witches from other cultures, but the hint about what the book is about, is in the title. Too each Witch, would be their own personal belief of which God/Goddess/Witch would be appropriate for them. I'm sure other Witches have written about other ones. So if you're a new Witch, give this one a read!
I only read the preview available from Amazon and not the whole book.
If you want to buy this book DO NOT buy the eBook version. The formatting translates poorly and is a visual mess. From the pictures of the physical book I’ve seen online it’s beautiful.
The author clearly comes from a Wicca background. Which isn’t bad but it limits their thinking. For me that tradition is very much based in consumerism and capitalism. We need to buy this color candle, and this expensive herb, and have all these tools in order to do things a certain way. It seems improbable that 1,000 years ago my ancestors had a special knife just for rituals.
Like other easily dismissed books in the genre, an unhealthy combo of rules with no references. No real links to folkloric foundations or analysis of the power structures inherent in these.
Could be better set out with stronger internal referencing etc. However not too badly written (although I tired quickly of the stunningly attractive and helpful deities in her meditations).
May be a good primer for some interested in a broad overview of modern and *very* commercial witchcraft but I'm sure there's better and more in Dugan than this.
A great read for any Witch, whether you're a novice or an advanced practitioner. Her conversational writing style is so refreshing, and this book is chock full of information that will do wonders for sprucing up your craft.
well laid out. Easy to read. some of the recipes are not listed in the index in the back for reference, but that is what post-its are for. Organized by day of the week. This is a great reference.
I really love Ellen Dugan Books especially this one. It gives you good references and notes to help you make your own material. I recommend this book to everyone.
