Tea and No Sympathy

Rate this book
It's Potter's fault, of course, that Draco finds himself trapped in the same twenty-four-hour period, repeating itself over and over again. It's been nearly a year since the unpleasant business at Hogwarts, and Draco's getting on with his life quite nicely, thank you, until Harry sodding Potter steps in and ruins it all, just like always. At first, though, the time loop seems liberating. For the first time in his life, he can do anything, say anything, be anything, without consequence. But the more Draco repeats the day, the more he realizes the uncomfortable truth: he's falling head over heels for the speccy git. And suddenly, the time loop feels like a trap. For how can he ever get Harry to love him back when time is, quite literally, against him?

A lovely Drarry time-loop story. Draco had a terrible day, really really terrible. Bad enough that he decided to give the modified-Time-Turner he'd been working on a try to see if he could get a do-over. He ends up in a 24-hour time loop and starts by blaming Harry, but then proceeds to stalk and then get to know and then fall for him instead. Wonderfully well done, right up to the end.

Really, though, the story was just so, so well done. Draco's growth as each new day doesn't start is subtle and profound and spectacular. His voice as narrator is perfect, and he and Harry are lovely together, every new time.

And the owl! So, so cute! And getting to go with the boys to Hogwarts and see so many other characters was delightful. Great good fun all around.

Some Favorite Quotes:
Happily, though, he doesn't seem to be dead, and the world remains otherwise unexploded.

a passing man--shirtless, but wearing some sort of cattle-wrangling hat and flared leather trousers.

Draco feels his lips do something awkward, which might be a smile, or might just be shock.

Some wizards
do live cheek by jowl with Muggles, of course, but Draco thinks it must be tedious to have to keep Obliviating the neighbors.

It makes perfect sense, if Draco doesn't think about it too hard.

It must be hard, Draco thinks, to maintain an arse-face when you're confronted by a man with an owl on his head.

Fucking thing; of all the owls he had to pick, he chose a tiny evil mastermind.

Hagrid's massive dog, curled up by the unlit fire, raises its head and growls at him, exposing massive fangs and drooling alarmingly. Draco tries to look like he would taste extremely bad.

Draco sits in Harry's kitchen and tries to look plausible.

THIS FANFICTION HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE BEST ONES I'VE EVER READ!! I literally took the day off just so I can read it. I just finished reading it and it's 2 fucking am BUT I DON'T CARE. THIS HIT ME RIGHT IN THE FEELS, HARD. The writing style is utterly beautiful. I cry every time Draco wakes up realizing Harry forgot everything. I mean, imagine being stuck in a time-loop and you actually do something with the love of your life that's amazing and then by midnight, you wake up in the morning to the same day remembering everything perfectly and your lover remembering nothing. IMAGINE GOING THROUGH THAT DOZENS OF TIMES. While this fic was tragic and breaking my heart in every way possible, it was also fucking hilarious. The way Draco was portrayed in this fic was the best I've came across, of all the fics that I've read.

"Fucking, shitty, cunty, arsey, bollocks."

This is officially my new catchphrase.

Anyways, let's get to the sad side now. Feel my pain.

"And... if Draco's honest with himself, Potter is his centre, and always has been."

crying gif photo: Crying d39a26d3.gif

"That while you're falling in love, I might have been in love with you all along."

crying gif photo: 4.gif

I'll end here. If I don't, I'll just quote 80% of the fic.

The ending for this fic was just perfect . I CRIED. TOO MUCH. STILL AM CRYING. PROBABLY SHOULD STOP. *starts reading again* NOOOOO. HELP.

I’ve been on a hiatus from reading- which is something I never thought I’d say!
Work and life caught up with me so I haven’t read a book in three months!

But oh, how I’ve missed it. And to get me back into my book worm ways- I thought I’d start off with a little fanfic.

It was lovely. 4 stars from me.

Now I have to ignore my yearly book target (because that is never going to happen) and decide what to read next…

I've discovered that I'm a total sucker for Groundhog Day fanfics. I think my first 'crossover' was a SPN (Sam/Dean) fic, and suffice to say, I've found myself in love.

But this here? It's simply beautiful. I love Draco's POV and his character development.
To witness his development from the bratty pureblood--loyal to a fault to his charming father and trying to find an In again with the ministry while throwing money left and right--to a more insightful, self-reflected version of himself... who seems to have grown up and doesn't care all that much about prestige anymore and instead follows his heart and puts himself out there.

(The solution to Draco's Groundgog Day problem in the end was a bit too easy, though... Nevertheless: awesome Drarry read.)

Drao had a horrible day, and activate a time-turner to repeat the day. But now he is stuck in a time- loop and have to repeat the same day over and over again. And in the process he grew up, grew some balls, and fell in love with Harry Potter.

I really liked Draco's POV, and his character developmment during this story. Harry was also very likeable, and it was quite clear why Draco fell in love with him.

Because life is short, and this was delightful.

Of lately, fanfic has become a new guilty pleasure of mine. The prefect way to relax, or letting your brain/heart/soul recuperate after a particularly savage or heavy book, a way to cure that book hangover without risking to ruin a new book on my TBR 'cause I wasn't ready to move on. Haha, basically what I'm, saying is: fanfic is the perfect re-bound for me!

TEA AND NO SYMPATHY had me laughing. A lot. It's a Draco-centric Drarry-fic, and I loved Draco's voice, and seeing things from his perspective, and he just cracked me up. Having said that, there were times where I kinda ached for him a bit, too...

I'm normally not in to time-loop stories because I usually feel like I'm reading the same chapter over and over again, with minor differences, but this was well done, and didn't feel repetitive at all, and I ended up enjoying it immensely.

Highly recommend this if you're looking for a fun Drarry fic with an actual plot (and yes, there's some smut too).

was debating whether i should consider fanfics as books that i've read, but fuck it, i loved this one a lot! read it in 2019, so i don't remember the details that well, but, considering the fact that it is in my recs on ao3, it must've been very good. i think this was the first time loop fanfic (and also time loop book!) that i ever read, it introduced me to a trope that i now love! a solid read (except for the explicit parts maybe)

“Tea and No Sympathy” is unlike any book I’ve ever read. It takes clear inspiration from Groundhog Day, a film I’ve always loved: the sense of endless repetition, a protagonist slowly changing as each day passes while everyone around him remains the same, forgetting everything when they wake up again, even the person he’s falling in love with. The self reshaped and a love that must begin anew each morning.

So it was a pleasant surprise to discover that there’s a fanfiction out there with a similar premise. Draco Malfoy has to give a speech at the House of Lords, the Muggle Parliament, about unity between the wizarding and muggle world. He’s nervous, and not just because all important wizarding diplomats will be present, but because the guest of honor is Harry sodding Potter. He’s also jittery because he doesn’t really like the speech his father wrote for him.

As he delivers the infamous speech, reaching the line about how “the Malfoys helped win the war”, Harry fucking Potter walks out of the room, angry, seething, disappointed. And with him, the rest of the room also flees.

Draco is embarrassed, hurt, and infuriated. As he wakes up the next day, he does something he will regret in a few days time: he uses a Time-Turner he has been repairing for the past year, to turn back time to yesterday morning. This time, he delivers a short speech, leaving out any ill-chosen phrases, and Potter doesn’t leave the room. There, fixed! He can now go home and rest.

Except the next morning, he wakes up and he’s expected to deliver his speech again. It seems that he wasn’t entirely successful in fixing the broken Time-Turner: he’s stuck in a 24-hour time-loop.

“What fun. Lucky, too, that you were around to try to murder me in an arsing bathroom in an oh-so-heroic attempt to get me stuck for the rest of eternity with Moaning Myrtle.”

At first, it is liberating! Nothing he does matters, as tomorrow it will all be erased. He can be anyone, do anything, and there will be no consequences. Unfortunately, this means that he ends up in Muggle jail after accidentally getting into a fist fight with Weasley lmao.

"Why the hell did you owl me to let me know you're on my doorstep? Couldn't you, just, you know, ring the doorbell?"

"I thought it more polite," Draco says politely. "Give you time to get dressed."

However, he soon realizes he’s living in a prison of his own making, with no way of knowing how to fix the time-turner to escape the nightmare. And as the days go by, he starts to slowly but irrevocably fall in love with Harry Potter, who doesn’t even remember that they’ve become friends when he wakes up the next day in the time-loop with his memory erased. Fall in love again, and again, fall in love again, and again.

“The only thing worse than spending eternity trapped in a loop would be if there was no longer any hope at all of seeing Harry. The only thing worse than being forgotten, over and over again, would be knowing he could never even try to be remembered.”

It is such an intricate, beautiful story. Draco has a magnificent adventure, testing the boundaries of time. Exposing himself and being vulnerable, flirting with Harry because what does it matter? No one will remember tomorrow. Except maybe, one day they will. If only Draco knew how to escape the time-loop… he has no idea how to fix time itself.

“It feels a bit like being flayed, Draco thinks wearily. It's sixth year, and he's back in that bathroom with Potter. Only this time, instead of Potter ripping his chest open with some forbidden spell, Harry's expecting Draco to rip open his own chest, to show him his secret hurts, let him stare, while Harry pretends he never asked for it.”

And maybe one day, after months of time piling up on itself, Harry wakes and meets Draco’s eyes and feels a strange déjà vu — a sense of having been loved this way before, in a day that’s happened too many times to count.

“Draco looks at him, and he knows that Harry doesn't remember, he just knows it, but the moment thickens until Draco's half-sure Harry remembers something - even if it's just a half-memory, a whisper of love, as if in a dream.”

It’s an incredible story! Everyone pls read it, you’ll fall in love with every situation Draco gets up to as the days repeat themselves❤️ and you’ll also fall in love with Pip, his new pet owl, the little bastard. I adore him.

(This is not smth negative about the boy). Something I will say though, is that i’ve come to realize that while i LOVE most drarry fanfics and interpretations of the character dynamics, i (personally) do not rlly appreciate it when fanfics act like harry already likes draco at the beginning of the story. I don’t rlly like it when he is already open to being friends with draco, or when he is already aware that he fancies draco and is lowkey okay with it… i prefer it when fanfics follow canon and harry dislikes draco at the beginning! I love it when the romance is slowburn, when he slowly realizes that he’s always been attracted to him in Hogwarts, even while he hated him. I do like it when draco already knows that he’s gay and into harry bc i feel like that’s smth that could happen in canon lol.

However, in Tea and No Sympathies, i didn’t care that much that harry was open to being friends with draco bc i understand that it’s the basis for a lot of plot points in the story. If harry still held a strong dislike for malfoy, then a lot of the scenes in this fanfic wouldn’t have happened. So it makes sense, in this story. I rlly liked it! That’s the only negative thing i have to say and it’s not even smth i disliked abt the fanfic (bc it makes sense here), just smth i discovered about myself🤣

So anyway, read this book! I was half-crying at the end. There was just so much build-up emotion. Gosh, i even love the title, it’s hilarious! I love the moment in the story when the title makes sense. Tbh, the whole book is just pure laughter. Like Draco, be for real:

“It occurs to him that he could Apparate into Weasley's cell and beat the living daylights out of him, but that sounds like too much hard work. Besides, he didn't especially want to punch him in the first place; circumstances had conspired against him.”

Or this other quote lmfao i love draco:

“It matters, if you care what other people think of you," Potter says. Of course Draco sodding cares. Has Potter not paid attention at any point, during the last forever?”

I just can’t with this man. I love the imaginary kinship between Draco and Buckbeak:

“He tries not to shudder or show fear; it's just a bird. Sort of. Just a bloody chicken.

A chicken that's going to eat him alive.”

⚠️**SPOILERS**⚠️ Oh and i also love the last scene. Draco holding out a hand to Harry, Harry smiling and finally accepting it. Poetry. Hand symbolism. Parallels: harry refusing draco’s hand in the train in 1st year, draco taking harry’s hand in the fiendfyre, harry finally accepting draco’s hand in front of multiple people. Hands hands hands!!!! Pride & Prejudice who? (dont come for p&p it love it)

4.5 stars, but deserves to be rounded up!
I stayed up until 4am to read this fantastic fic. It is so well-written, filled with endless witty dialogue and sentences that made me laugh out loud. I was filled with glee at times, and at times the scene made me clutch my chest while overwhelmed with emotion in a way that befits a sap like me.
Draco is such a flawed git, and I was angry with him quite a few times because of his opinions on various things but he won me over as the story progressed. Even by the end of the story, I felt that there is much that Draco still needs to learn and harmful opinions he still needs to relieve himself from. But he's determined to be better, and that's what made him endearing to me.
I loved this version of Harry because he was just willing to be swept away by Draco, always trusting him without really knowing if that is the safest thing for him to do. I loved how Harry was curious, honest and open- his growth process is a wonder to behold. This Harry has clearly done some soul searching and has grown up, becoming a smart and confident person that knows when he needs to lay down his weaknesses and be venerable. But by no means is he afraid to speak his mind.
I think the solution was a bit simple and I was expected to be blown away by it like I was by the rest of the fic, but I loved it nonetheless.

Overall thoughts: love love love the idea and plenty of cute scenes, but sometimes doesn't have the emotion or stakes to back them up. And the ending was not sufficient.

And now, spoilers.
I'll tell you now, as a copyeditor, I have many opinions on this work. Many not good. But I still enjoyed it, and admire the work put into it, and love the idea behind it. It's definitely getting my brain inspired to try my own Groundhog Day story, but it seems like such a big undertaking. Props to this author.

Notes:
- It feels really directionless, at least in the beginning. I think the whole the-day-keeps restarting-so-everything-is-meaningless-thing could have been explored more. Like, I was definitely expecting a scene where Draco fully loses it and starts acting completely careless, angry. We get, like, one scene where he upends a desk. I'm gonna need a lot more than that because I, for one, would be fully losing my mind if the same day kept restarting over and over again.
- I'm not of a fan of the layout of the story. We begin on the day after things go wrong, so wrong that Draco feels the need to turn back time. I'm left wondering, what was so bad that he felt the need to do something so drastic? And then we restart the day before, but it doesn't feel like the audience is restarting it because we haven't even seen it yet. I think it's important in these Groundhog Day stories to establish what the baseline is, the regular sequence of the day. So, it's just odd that we don't get to see the first day play out in its entirety. It would've helped to set the tone and see what Draco's life is like on a regular day, clueing us in to what things are like normally and what things need to change.
- I am squinting carefully at the OOC. You are toeing the line, sir. For the most part, it's alright, but Draco visiting Harry's parents' graves? Really?? Doubt. Also, I don't care what you say, there is no world where Hagrid would be so mean to Draco. He's too kind for that. But I did love him making sure Draco reconciles with Buckbeak. I like the flying scenes :)
- Pip has my entire heart. Best part of the story. Needs more Pip.
- Why wouldn't the resetting also reset his sleep deprivation and pains? And why do his clothes change? This had me confused for a while, until I realized that Draco is actually himself being sent back in time every day. It makes sense if you squint (like, where are his other selves going?), but a big part of Groundhog Day stories is that nothing is permanent. It's both helpful and maddening, depending on how the protagonist is feeling or what exactly they're up to, and I think it would just work better in general. Now I'm just stressed that he's gonna start ageing noticeably. That's horrifying. People are gonna look at him and the slight changes that crop up randomly and think, "What the fuck."
- Combining my favorite things: stalking and denial.
It's not stalking so much as heroism. It makes perfect sense, if Draco doesn't think about it too hard.

- The paranoia about Harry getting into a relationship is downright comical. I am also so here for the slightly yandere thoughts.
- Biggest twist in the entire story is Lucius Malfoy not being homophobic.
- I love the scene of Draco getting drunk and showing up at Harry's house, because I've been waiting for a scene where Draco shows up and acts like they're close, but to Harry this is the first time they've seen each other.
- The banter when they're visiting Hogwarts and reliving their younger days? Now that's what I'm talking about!
- Actually, this whole day was the best of all. I literally wheezed at the scene:
"Can I ask you another question?"
"Depends," Potter says, a glimmer of his usual fight resurfacing. "Is it an arsey one? I've had just about enough of-"
"No," Draco says. "It's a fucking embarrassing one, and I've been building up to it all day."
"Oh, god," Potter says faintly. But because he's a Gryffindor, thank Merlin: "Go on then."
"May I kiss you?"

- Just gonna say: perfect amount of smut.
- Please please please let Draco pensieve his memories together for Harry. PLLLEEEEEEEAAASSE.
- Oh ho. OH HO. OH HO-HO-HO. I DID NOT CONSIDER LEGILIMENCY. GREAT SCOTT.
They should've made that a regular thing, Fifty First Dates style. I would've liked to see it happen a few more times, sigh...
- the solution. hermione's BIG SOLUTION. was just exploding. the time-turner. And it worked. Honestly, Draco should've cursed this ridiculously simplistic outcome a bit. Because I certainly did.
He dramatically gets the whole gang on board after trying with, like, hundreds of professionals, and Hermione thinks for quite a long while, and her big idea is to just... blow it up. AND IT WORKS.
- THE ENDING?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME. WE DON'T SEE THEM ACTUALLY GET TOGETHER?! WE DON'T GET TO SEE DRACO SHOWING HARRY EVERYTHING HE-- THEY--WENT THROUGH. FOR SJHBAJKEHFJHE SAKE.

I love time loop stories, so I was really excited for this one. Alas, I had two false starts anyways because it didn't fit my mood. Finally, the third time, I had a good time.

I liked Draco getting to know Harry, but I wasn't really feeling Draco's growth. It felt more like he realized he could get away with certain actions, so since there was less risk, he was able to do it. But I suppose that's a certain kind of growth. Realizing a certain action doesn't lead to as bad a result as you think. But the end implies that Draco has grown beyond his family's name and wanting to please his father so much because he realizes that he wants Harry more. I don't know. It felt a little sudden. Like it wasn't real growth, but more like a "yay! I'm free! I'm going to celebrate by doing what I want" but that he might fall back on old habits within a few months of life getting back to normal because deep down, he hasn't really changed.

That's the joy of a lot of time loop stories. The growth a character makes when they don't really have anything else to do and all the time in the world. The opportunity to really delve into yourself and find out truths about yourself. Or even because the universe has decided you must. That's not what this one was about. The time loop offers an opportunity for Draco to fall in love with Harry, but I was left unsatisfied at the end, because of how one-sided it all was. Because it wasn't really about Harry helping Draco to grow as a person while he falls in love or something along those lines, I don't think the time loop was utilized that well. It felt like a story where Draco and Harry get to know each other, and I like that bit, and get together. And because of that, they should have been on the journey together and I was annoyed that Harry kept having to forget his part of it.

Tea and No Sympathy is such a good read! So soft, funny, well-developed and with an amazing plot.
Many fanfictions end up forgetting their plot premise and start talking only about the main couple's relationship. But this one absolutely does not. It manages to share the stage with Draco's morality, his cosmic and long lasting crush on Potter (since he strictly calls Harry by his last name) and, of course, the time-loop problem.

I usually tend to avoid Draco-centered fanfics because I feel like part of the original saga (Harry's pov) is missing, but this time it was flawless. Harry's character is wide and you understand and comprehend him without any obstacles.

On the other side, also Draco's character is wholesome, one of the best Dracos I've ever found in a fanfiction. He's a sarcastic king who tries avoiding situations with snark, but at the same time he is completely aware of things happening around him. He knows some of his behaviors must change and with time he starts controlling and repulsing them. And that is what I call character development!
Besides his love for Pipsqueak, the little owl, is spot on for Draco's progress.

I also loved the amount of details we get to see of Draco and Pottah lives. For example, Harry's daily-routine and his passion for strong black tea.
Now if someone, in my ideal world, will ever ask me: "If it's true that you know everything about the Harry Potter world, can you tell me what type of tea Draco Malfoy drinks?", I'll be able to answer proudly: "Lots of milk, he doesn't say, to disguise the taste; he doesn't actually like strong, unsugared tea much. He's more of a hot chocolate sort of chap. He's always had a sweet tooth."

The ending could have been better because the time-loop was, in my opinion, solved way too easily. But I appreciated, A LOT, that the author chose to pursue the story setting on the day of the time-loop (the 4th of June) even at its conclusion. They did not do something like a time jump which usually leaves me with a bitter taste. The story IS the day of the 4th of June and it doesn't change ‘till the very last sentence. It is an open ending, which is far more than great!

This fanfiction is going right on my TOP 5 all time favorites Drarrys.

Two words: so refreshing

I've been craving some Draco content, lately, and I decided to give fanfictions a try after 8+ years. Well: it was worth it.

Everything about it was amazing: Draco's depiction and amazing depth was everything I needed. His emotions, his character development, his views on the past and how they evolved throughout his temporary personal hell... It felt like I was getting to know him on an other level.

Harry, on the other hand, was never a character I particularly liked... Until today. I got to like him, to see him in a new light... Or in several new lights, if I'm being honest. I surprisingly found myself sharing most of Draco's views on Harry's "hero" status but, as did Draco's, they evolved until I could empathize more with him.

The story was well written and I could feel Draco's desperation to fix things: I was as frustrated as him when everything kept resetting, simply erasing the previous day's progress again and again without being able to put a stop to it. Through my frustration, though, I still absolutely LOVED Pipsqueak and thought it was a lovely way for Draco to feel less lonely in this mess... I would have loved to get some more clarification on his condition, though.

It was, overall, a lovely read and I could honestly go on about it for many more paragraphs but I'm sure these are enough to convince anyone that are still hesitating to give it a try to actually do it.

"Harry cares, you know. Why do you think he spoke so eloquently on your behalf at your trial, even though he knows you hate him? Think about it, Draco."

A “Groundhog Day” like story with Draco stuck in a time loop. A budding friendship turns into love and then pain because Draco is the only one who remembers. A solid and delightful little Drarry fanfic. Enjoyed it quite a lot.

Draco's known for a long time that he's gay (and for just as long that it is something he can't tell his parents). Draco wants to be friends with Harry Potter(is overwhelmed by how much he wants to be friends with Harry Potter) and Harry wants to be friends with Draco too.
"Why do you want to be friends?
You don't like me. Your friends don't like me. Your girlfriend doesn't like me. Your—" He stops.
Potter is wearing an odd expression. "What?" "I don't have a girlfriend," Potter says

Potter is less straight than previously imagined, but what difference does it make to Draco's own life?
Bonus points for the cutest little owl buddy who figures it all out before even Hermione Granger.

Amazing fics!
I loved Draco in this, his characterization was pretty good. His character development was even better, it was so good to see him grow emotionally. I also loved Harry’s personality, he was so cute
Also the little owl in the fics was hilariously cute, I have no words for it. I laughed so hard on those parts that featured the cutie owl.
As a person who is not a native english speaker, the writing style of the fics was very appealing, its expressive while also being funny and understandable, just perfect.
Definitely worth reading it!

5 stars - my first non-one shot Drarry and i fear i may have started with a fic that’s gonna ruin my expectations for every other drarry fic 3

this was just so genuinely cute, wow. it was so sad seeing draco so utterly frustrated in being stuck and having to re-do the same day over and over; but it made the happy moments so much better.

i loved these two together. harry is just such a cute guy and is too sweet <3

spice was only at the end, and was mostly just frotting - but it was v hot :P

Tropes:
– Draco/Harry fanfic
– Time Loop

Draco's stuck in a time loop where he falls more and more in love with Harry every single day but Harry doesn't remember! I really liked this one and it was so sweet to see Draco make amends and develop his relationship with Harry and the bits of Harry we see where he liked Draco all along. Cuteness all around. I've always found this author's writing so witty, which is the same in this book as well. A very fun time.

4.75 stars 🌟. This fic was sad and heartwarming at the same time :).

To start off, the little owl is the best character no questions asked, no complaints, I am right about this.

Draco’s characterisation was done really well in this, it felt like it was truly him.

Harry in this was a sweet pie who has the kindest heart :).

This concept of living the same day over and over again is kind of overdone sometimes but this fic did it realllllllyyyyyy well.

Overall, I loved everything about this fic, I have no criticism at all only positive feelings :).
