Most authors do not write children's books in rhymes for various reasons, therefore rhyming stories should be considered special, even unique. Under one condition: the storyteller should be a maverick wordsmith who knows that a rhyme is not created for the sake of it - rhyming is a sort of singing. The cadence is there to make the poetic language sound like a piece of music but in order to have a melody the author must always use rhythm to set the tempo of the language. Rhyming is water that is not easy to be navigated - verses should help authors create stories like songs but stories must always come before the rhyme and MYSTY THE MYSTICAL UNICORN is not there yet. I received a free copy of the book from the author.
I definitely have to say something about the rhyming, which is quite off most of the time. But I will still go with 5* because of the illustrations.
I loved the watercolor style and I am pretty sure that for a child who loves unicorns, the text won't even matter so much, the illustrations will do all the job. So I will too increase a bit my rating, because of the lovely unicor in the book.
Beautifully illustrated watercolors bring a unicorn tale to life. The rhyming is a little off, but I enjoyed the illustrations and whimsy of the sentiment.
This book is just so pretty. The story is kind of blah, but the images make up for it in the best way. Little kids will love the beautiful unicorns and skies.
I received an electronic ARC from the author through Story Monsters. Paterson shares a heartwarming story about a unicorn who encourages a young girl to believe in herself. Readers meet a unicorn who shares all about her gifts and what brings her joy. When she engages with a young girl, she encourages her to believe in the same things for herself. The artwork is lovely and invites readers in to be part of the magic. An encouraging read for children of all ages.
