So very rarely is a book of poetry so page-turning that it, upon release, immediately becomes essential reading. The emotional rollercoaster that is “Damaged”, written by Jimmy Broccoli, whips you around on unstable rails, transporting you to a Poetic Wonderland that challenges the traditional, while embracing the unexplored. It’s multi-colored, neon graffiti on darkened walls in dimly lit rooms. It’s hesitant confessions gently leaving the lips of the accused. It’s the unexpected invitation to the dance.“Damaged” is exposed and vulnerable verse that whispers in bold type. This is narrative poetic storytelling like you haven’t read before. Welcome to the confessional poetic landscape of Jimmy Broccoli. Bring a flashlight.
Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2022 I found this poetry to be brilliantly written. The poems are deeply moving. That’s what I love about excellent writing. I couldn’t put this book down until I browsed all the poems on the first read! Then I took my time and savored each one during the next read-through. What a powerful collection!!! Wow. Best book purchase of the year!
Damaged by Jimmy Broccoli was the book that I needed to find and read. I found myself reflecting on many dark and turbulent times. It was refreshing to read in someone else's words, personal experiences that truly resonated with me to the point I felt at times I was experiencing de javu! Jimmy Broccoli tackles and shares subject matter with both humor and conviction. His voice is fresh, real, and needed in these times!
Jimmy Broccoli’s lyrical verses grabbed and wrangled my ovaries. Although a lot of his poems are dark and grim, (how I like them), his language is visual and has a catchy rhythm that’s easy to follow—and feel with intensity. I’m in love with his style and delivery and aspire to write more poetry and prose because of this book.
What an absolutely beautiful collection of poetic writings. I truly felt like I was picking up a diary and looking into the soul of the man that wrote it. Like it was an invitation to SEE him, but I felt like I had to hold it with such delicate hands.
I think…The Doctors Were Wrong, Paperdoll, and Mask were my favorites. The intermissions about Gloria and his mother were heart-warming.
