I got this book as an ARC.

Here are my thoughts:

Part 1: I love seeing things from Mary’s POV. It reminds me a lot of A Beautiful Mind. I love her and Marcie’s friendship and I really like the way Adelia treats the people under her care (so far). It’s very interesting to see things from a schizophrenics perspective and how real it must feel for them. So far it’s been a slow burn.

Part 2: The book is definitely starting to speed up. We’re starting to get hints that her “friends” may not be what we originally thought. We get to meet Errol in this part and he definitely adds a new element to the story. This is also when we start to see a budding romance between Mary and Derek. I love seeing her realize that even though she may have a mental illness people can still be attracted to her. I am starting to become very suspicious of Adelia. She seems to have two different personalities going on. The spying thing she has going on is also very weird. I’m enjoying seeing the residents start to figure out what’s going on!

Part 3: I’m finding it really interesting to see Mary try to rationalize the evidence that Sophie and Derek found. I’m also loving the Mary and Derek relationship! It’s interesting that Sophie has been discharged and then stopped all contact with the other patients. That definitely has me intrigued. It’s hard for me to believe that Marcie has just stopped contacting Mary after how close they got when they were both patients there. Derek is definitely onto something. Most of the staff seem to be sweet to Mary but they are obviously guarding a secret. Now that Derek has left, Mary feels all alone until she finds a note from him. I’m barely able to put the book down now!!

Part four: this part starts right after Mary reads the note from Derek. Mary’s therapy session starts to paint a new picture of Adelia. I definitely don’t trust her anymore. Seeing Mary find out that Derek really was telling the truth is so awesome! My eyes could barely read fast enough! Errol really came in clutch! I’m glad he was added into the book. Would’ve loved to see more of him though. I absolutely loved seeing more about Mary’s past, it explained so so much!! I am in shock about Adelia’s true intentions! I knew it had to be bad, I just didn’t realize how bad! The ending of Chapter 6 in this part still has me reeling. I dropped my jaw at this part. I had no idea how important Eileen would be until the very end! It’s crazy how seemingly insignificant characters end up being so important! This book definitely took a lot of twists and turns.

Overall: I really enjoyed this book. The first part was a slow burn but the pace quickly picks up when the patients start to figure out something is going on and it’s goes even quicker when one by one Mary’s friends are discharged. I enjoyed trying to further out what was going on behind the scenes and trying to read the subtle nuances of the staff. My only complaint is that it took around 80% of the way through the book to find out that Mary can communicate with the dead and that seemed to be a big thing in the description of the book. I enjoyed finding out about her dad and figuring out he had the same power as Mary! The whole book kept me guessing and just as I would think I’d figured something out, a new element would come into play!

This was a very interesting book. There are several twists throughout this book that I didn't expect. This is a book that if your uncomfortable with triggers you might want to skip. I enjoyed following the FMC and her journey through The Rainbow Room. This will be a book that I will continue to follow the series. I would give this book a 4.5

I was really intrigued when I read the synopsis for this book and it was one I decided I really fancied. I am so glad I gave this a chance because it was brilliant right the way through. From an addictive and emotional start going through some amazing scenes, events, mysteries, terrors and suspicions to an amazing ending. It has left me wanting to read more in this series as soon as possible.

Mary has non-treatable schizophrenia, she has just been admitted to a world-class treatment centre after trying to end her life. This is top of the art, full of luxurious surroundings and a small group of residents that are helped by staff and nurses. All under the watchful eye of Dr Adelia Sinclair, she has been working on alternative treatments and therapies that allow her patients to go on to live lives out in the community.

Mary is nervous when she arrives, it is so different to the usual mental health units she3 has been in, it is quiet, and clean and she has her own room with nice clothes. There is one thing that she is missing though, and that is the voices of those who have followed her around, some for years. Many think Mary is crazy, but she isn't. She has a gift and hasn't yet realised it.

This is such an amazing book to read, it was emotional but not necessarily in the way you would think. The story focuses on Mary, her life, how she came to be in this unit and the people she meets there. In some ways, the author plays on some of the stereotypes of how people with serious mental illnesses are perceived. This works very well with how previous treatments were used. The approach that Adelia takes with her patients in this book shows of progressive modern thinking. This is where again the stereotype comes in, conspiracy theorists. Again it is something that fits with stereotypes and perceptions along with muttering, mumbling, rocking and unacceptable behaviours.

This is a mix of several genres, for me, the mystery was the main one along with a good thriller vibe. I would say this has a strong paranormal element, but within the context of the story, it is one that works incredibly well. I know some people will look at the genres and turn away from this style, but for me, it is the mystery of what is happening and why that makes this book so very good. But then I do like the odd paranormal read from time to time.

This book delves into some tough issues that people have gone through, they can be tough at times but they are part of the story and one or two are particularly heartbreaking. By the end of the book, I was caught up in emotions that I didn't expect from this genre. An amazing feeling, with many positives and a definite interest in wanting to read more in this series. It is one I would definitely recommend and I look forward to reading what the author comes up with next.

I have to also mention how brilliantly the title worked for this book.

Well deserved five stars. It deserves more!

This one caught my attention immediately , as I have a huge interest in the paranormal, so I jumped at the chance to be part of this tour. Also was an added bonus, with the psychology aspect of the story, which is another huge interest of mine. The perfect combination.

This is Marys story, we are thrown right into the deep end straight away, reading all the different 'voices' she can hear, and quickly learning about how she is living.
After, thankfully, being intercepted just as she was about to jump to end it all, she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital to get the care she needs.
All takes a sinister turn when things start to not add up. When the ones she befriended, leave without hearing another word from them. She should be on full alert.
All this this while she was trying to figure out the voices.

Absolutely incredible plot, I loved Mary, even if to be begin with I found her to be really hostile, but still that is understandable.
I loved little Mary....I won't say anymore on who she is, as I don't want to spoil it, but oh my heart!.
I saw that this is book 1, so I'm very excited to read about Mary's next journey.

Thank you so much @randomthingstours @jp_altersauthor for our place on this tour.
My teenager daughter is now eager to read it!

Mary is schizophrenic and resistant to treatment. When she attempts to take her life she is saved, much to her chagrin, and awakens in a state-of-the-art, progressive private treatment center. Something is going on at The Rainbow Unit though; patients improve, get discharged and then seem to become something that is nothing like their true self.
A Psychic Subterfuge is a slow burning thriller with paranormal elements. It’s not quite horror, though the final 20% is pretty horrific.
I am quite impressed that this is J.P. Alters’ first published novel. There is terrific character development (Mary is an awesome protagonist), it’s suspenseful, gripping and has an original storyline. It even has a strong, positive end, which is a nice surprise when 90% of what I read is all dread, blood and brutality from start to finish.
The story spotlights the stigmas that surround mental health and the frequent ineptness of mental health treatment.
There are some editing issues, but that is expected in a 1st self-published book, and they aren’t so frequent as to distract from the story.
I look forward to Book 2 and highly recommend you check her out so you can say in a few years, “Yeah, I knew about her before anyone else.”

Today is my turn to review A Psychic Subterfuge, a paranormal thriller that shines a spotlight on mental health and the stigmas that surround it. It seems like a strange mix of genres; elements of mystery, the paranormal, romance and thriller, all set against the backdrop of a mental health facility and a protagonist with treatment-resistant schizophrenia…but somehow it really works! I flew through this in a couple of days AND I can add this to the (very small!) list of books that made me a bit teary!

Mary is such a complex and intriguing character, and her development from a potty-mouthed, suicidal loner into a (still potty-mouthed!) strong woman who is willing to invest in relationships and in herself is wonderful to read.

No spoilers here, so give it a go if you want to find out what secrets the seemingly perfect Dr Sinclair and her beloved Rainbow Unit are hiding…🤐

This is the first book in a paranormal thriller series about Mary and I’ll definitely be picking up the rest as and when they’re available, I’m recommending you do too 🙌🏻 Just a note though, check the trigger warnings first, there’s a few topics covered here that may hit a little hard for some people ❤️

This is what I'd call a fun read. Paranormal with a dash of romance and plenty of mystery/ tension towards the end. I went in blind, and that was a mistake. It took me a minute to figure out that Mary's friends were not real humans and were in her head. Not an author error, it was a me error. The storyline is about a schizophrenic who gets inpatient treatment after a suicide attempt. And the inpatient facility is super nice with a pool, a garden, and nice staff. Nothing like what Mary is accustomed to.
But are things what they seem? Especially difficult to know when you’re seeing everything first hand through the eyes of someone in a mental facility.
The ending wrapped everything up, but the explanations felt like pages of dialogue. Which isn't a bad thing, it was just a very complicated situation to sort out, and believe me when I say that onion had many layers to peel away. Anyway, it's a fun read. If you're into light reading, and paranormal with a love interest, you'd enjoy this book

It took my a bit to finish this one as it wasn’t my normal light read book, but I’m glad I finished it.
Mary, a treatment resistant schizophrenic, intents to end it all, but is stopped and committed to a prestigious facility for treatment. Only not everything is as it seems and her special abilities may just be the key to saving anyone who get admitted to the particular facility.

I’m not even sure how to explain my feelings about this book. The treatment of those with mental health issues has always squeezed my heart, and reading this book defiantly did that. Like waking from a realistic dream, it’s hard to decide what is real and what is a figment of the imagination.
I highly suggest just reading it and if it gets uncomfortable make sure you push through because Part 4, it’s highly worth it.

I read this book as an arc and want to leave my honest review…..
This book is definitely a CHECK YOUR TRIGGERS, in my opinion. It deals with mental illness, suicide, murder and child abuse
All that being said and it’s a lot I know, I loved this book overall
It was broken up into 4 parts each having there own chapters

We learn about Mary, who she is and where she comes from. You find out the hard life she has had and about her mental illness and the “friends” she has.
She is admitted into the Rainbow Unit and there unfolds all the rage Mary is, and to be honest she isn’t very likable but yet you feel for her and all she has been through
You also realize her “friends” aren’t around her much anymore and that makes Mary anxious and unhappy yet at the same time she starts slowly softening
We’re introduced to all of the staff and day to day at Rainbow Unit as well as the other patients, who Mary is quite awful to at first

Mary starts forming a bond with Marcie and I loved seeing it through her eyes, and who wouldn’t love Marcie
You start seeing things aren’t right at the Rainbow Unit
It’s interesting seeing how throughout the story Mary questions her thoughts and there validity and wondering if things were real and happening or part of her mental illness, the author did a great job showing the reader what it really is to be mentally challenged
You understand Mary had heard voices most of her life but mainly after her mother passed but at this point it isn’t known that Mary has psychic abilities

This book evoked a lot of emotions while reading……you felt Mary’s rage, her sadness, the love for her friends both real and the spirits she sees, you feel their pain of all they have been through
You watch Mary transform and your heart breaks and smiles at the same time

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of the series
I hope the author focuses more on Mary’s psychic abilities, it had me on the edge of my seat

I would absolutely recommend getting it on your tbr

I thoroughly enjoy a book which makes you question your own sanity and Psychic Voices did just that for me. With a mentally unreliable main character like Mary you are left wondering if it really is in her mind or something a little more sinister.

This book really evoked some different feelings for me and I'm fairly sure that's what JP (Author) was trying to do. The book is separated into parts and chapters. The first part I really struggled with. I absolutely, hand on heart, hated Mary with a passion. To the point I almost put this book down and didn't bother. So would like to say, if you are at that point or even get to that point... Keep going! I'm so glad I did. Through this book you see a lot of growth with Mary and also the other patients at the Rainbow Unit. I loved seeing things through Mary's eyes and watching her grow. I did find at times Mary came across as much younger than her early twenties (I believe she was 23) self, this could have been down to her harsh childhood I don't know.

The pace of the book at times seems to drag a little (Part 1 definitely, or that could have just been my dislike for Mary at the time), but then speeds up (Part 3 onwards) to a crescendo. I loved that I worked some things out really easily, but others alluded me. I won't give any spoilers here but loved the conclusions and that last chapter/epilogue. I also liked that this isn't the last we will hear from Mary Jameson and look forward to following on with more from her in other books. I would love to add that this would make an awesome audio book if they incorporated all the accents (Being someone from the UK). This book is available on Kindle Unlimited, so a free read if you subscribe to the service. A solid 4 stars.

Thank you to BookSirens for this ARC in exchange of an honest review.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Mary Osbourne is a Treatment resistant schizophrenic and after a particularly traumatic incident, she's admitted to the Rainbow Unit which specialises in patients like her. Initially Mary, along with her small group of imaginary friends, is resistant to the Unit, yet surprised at the benefits - access to the gardens, massages, swimming pool etc - all supplied by world renowned Dr Adelia Sinclair. After her initial hostility is settled down, treatment begins, however as her potential release date gets closer, some fellow patients express some concerns about the post-release care.
To begin with, I found the first half quite slow burn as we're introduced to the patients, staff and Dr Sinclair in detail and initially at least, Mary is quite unlikeable. I dont mind slow burn as long as the pay off is worth it and as the book progresses into the later stages, there are some great twists (one i didn't see coming at all!) and clever moments as well as some very touching revelations, all of which eased my concerns over the first half. The mental illness aspects are handled very well and sensitively and I'll be very interested in seeing how the series progresses after this promising start.

Mary is schizophrenic and resistant to treatment. She sees and speaks to people that no one else sees. After a failed suicide attempt she ends up at the exclusive, bougie state-of-the-art center know as The Rainbow Unit . Something is not quite right there though; patients improve, get discharged and then seem to become something that is nothing like their true self.
Psychic Voices is a slow burning thriller with paranormal elements. The author builds the suspense as the story takes a turn I didn't suspect and moves to an action packed finale.
I absolutely love Mary's inner dialogue, that with herself and her 'friends'. She is sarcastic, funny, vulnerable, has violent tendencies and is much stronger than she realizes.
The story is very well told with fantastic character development. It is hard to believe that this is J.P. Alters' first novel. If she continues to provide such quality stories hers will become a well-recognized name within the genre.
Psychic Voices is the first in a series featuring our protagonist and I very much look forward to following Mary's journey forward.

Definitely a Page Turner

Mary has psychic abilities and sees dead people but5 is incorrectly diagnosed as treatment-resistant schizophrenic. Partly because she misses her dead mom so much, Mary tries to take her own life but is saved and sent to The Rainbow Unit. At first, The Rainbow Unit and its founder, Dr. Adelina Sinclair, seem like the best place for Mary to get better. The hospital seems more like a plush resort than a mental institution and Dr. Sinclair seems to really care about her patients receiving the care they need to get better and return to society. Believing in Dr. Sinclair, Mary did not believe fellow patients when they try to explain that something strange is going on and patients are changing when they are discharged.Twists, turns and unexpected revelations will keep you turning pages. You will find yourself liking and actually caring for Mary, hoping she gets better. The characters are believable and quirky. Can’t wait to read the second book but after I read what I just found is Book 1.5, Psychic Training.

I couldn't put this down. If I did, I had to get right back into it. You felt right along with Mary. She wanted to lash out at the Staff and I sometimes wanted to do the same. But when the other patients were being let out from the compound, it was discovered that they weren't the same person that Mary knew. Mega- million dollar companies paid the "doctor"... Adelia... To reprogram these people into ... Nothing... No emotions, no movement, no memories. And when Derek, who was a computer programmer was able to get into the computer files, then things started to unravel.
This story was a grabber. It had references to WW2 where there were experiments on the mind to produce a "Master Race".. and this doctor was trying to profit and continue that practice.
I can hardly wait for book 2. Mary is one lady who knows what she wants and will not let anyone get in her way.

Psychic Voices pulls you in immediately with its haunting premise and never lets go. Mary Jameson is a deeply compelling protagonist vulnerable, conflicted, and fascinating to follow as she struggles to understand whether the voices she hears are symptoms of illness or something far more terrifying. The setting of the psychiatric unit adds an intense layer of claustrophobic tension, making every chapter feel unsettling in the best way.

What really impressed me was how the story blends psychological depth with supernatural suspense. The twists are unexpected, the mystery keeps unfolding, and the constant question of who or what can be trusted kept me turning pages late into the night.

If you love paranormal thrillers with strong characters and chilling revelations, don’t miss this one. Start Psychic Voices today and prepare to question everything.

A trip into the realm of mental illness, where the ordinary and the extraordinary coexist. The story is set in a perfect mental health unit, and Mary Jameson is very lucky to be incarcerated there.
This book grabbed me early and held my interest throughout. With a keen focus on character development, the author writes a memorable cast, each with their own range of psychosis. Their struggles and the relationships they build keep readers turning the pages.

The narrative is rich with suspense. You know it’s coming—you just don’t know when— keeping you on the edge of your seat as the characters continue to get better. This is a compelling work that explores the failings of the human condition. We root for Mary and want it to end well.
More in the series, and I can’t wait.

Just before she can end it all she is rushed to a psychiatric unit. For the first time in years she has found peace...but is everything as it seems at the Rainbow Unit ? A girl is believed to be schizophrenic and is placed in an institution that will hopefully help her with her issues she deals with on a daily basis. The doctor running the program seems to care about her patients but seems a little shady. As things begin to get intense, Mary has to make some hard choices.
This book was really intense. Mary thought she was just hearing voices so it was easy for professionals to diagnose her with a mental illness. The supernatural is difficult to believe so I am sure many people are diagnosed with a mental health issue. It is to bad that proving there are spirits is still unavailable.

Not what I was expecting at all!! At the beginning you learn about schizophrenia and Mary and how she lives with it. It was fascinating and you could tell it had been well researched. But the psychic in the title baffled me at that time.
It’s not until you keep reading that the plot unravels and oh boy was it good!!
I’m not going to say anymore because it’s all connected and needs to be experienced for the first time for maximum impact.
It was such a good book and I loved that I didn’t know what was happening until it hit me in the face.
I’ll definitely read the next one and I’d recommend anyone who loves supernatural thrillers to give it a go.

Thank-you both J. P and BookSirens for the free ARC copy, in exchange for an honest review.

This book didn’t really do much for me.

There were no real surprises, you could pretty much gauge majority of what was going to happen very early on in the book and then it was all dumped into the end of the book, leaving no real impact and feeling rushed and the relationship with Derek and the boyfriend references, didn’t make much sense to me, it was kind of just thrown in there with very little meaning or development.

It didn’t give me that gripping/edge of seat vibe, as described.

Would have been a 5 star

Man JP if the first half of this story was as good as the 2nd half you would have gotten 5 stars!! I almost looked for another read because I didn't understand the craziness in the beginning. Needed to explain more of why they were that way. I'm a big paranormal reader, love ghost, medium, witches and usually takes right off from the beginning and can't wait to download the next read in the series. I am gonna read your next now that Mary has it together. Good read, thank you

This book is told from the point of view of Mary, who knows she is schizophrenic and is in a hospital for it. She hears voices, but could they be real? They are real to her, and eventually to us as well. If you can't take the disorganization of a schizophrenic mind, get out while you can. But if you like horror and true evil, and you like seeing the hidden forces in this world carefully described, this is an excellent book.

Mary is a psychic and she doesn't realize that she is. She is diagnosed wrongly and her story helped me to understand what it could be like to have that ability.
The first chapter is a doozy, but by the end of the book, you understand what was going on.
I will be following J P Alter to see what comes next for Mary. I feel like her next stories will be even better.

Psychic Voices is an emotional read about a young girl who is discovering who she is as a person. Mary Jameson produces a fun and chilling read for all ages. However, even though this book is compelling, some more editing and this book will be a chilling read readers will never forget. This book was hard to put down!

First off, I never give 5 stars as I believe that means a book is perfect and no one is perfect. However, I definitely give this book a 4. It is scary, uncomfortable, worrisome, intriguing and so many other things, it's hard to describe. You never know what's going to happen, it kept me on edge the further I read, the worse I got. This is one of those books that draws you in so much that you don't realize you've read the whole thing and can't wait for the next one. Off to book #2!
