When I found out my best friend was mated to an alien, I had questions.
My best friend was what now? Just no. Crashing onto this hellscape jungle planet was bad enough. Not to mention the near-miss to my femoral artery or the tentacled lake beast or the woman-eating tree. But to discover the alien locals were mating with hapless humans was a bridge too far! Once my trusty A.I. sidekick explained what was up and that they were called "heart mates", I knew I had to find Pattee Crow Flies and make sure she wasn’t brainwashed. Just as soon as I could catch my breath. Because damn, my leg hurt, and I was so tired. If it wasn’t for my alien doggo friend, I’d probably be dead by now. And then one of those alien locals introduced himself as my heart mate?
Aw, hell no.
Did I have to fall in love in order to live?
Laugh your way through Amity and Natheka’s romance as they navigate the treacherous waters of new love on Predator Planet and join the first two couples on their epic quest to thrive on Certain Death.
I just felt uncomfortable finishing this book after not finishing the last one because of the merging of indigenous American religion and an alien one. I’d be happy to be proven wrong that this is actually ok, but it seemed…. off. If the author is a part of this culture (haven’t seen any info indicating such from her bio, but again, happy to be wrong), then that’s her prerogative.
BUT ..........God I HATE the new covers they are beyond awful.
Point one they look NOTHING like the characters in the book. Point two The stories are so good they would attract a diverse readership not just the romance field. but the cringe covers will put people off. At least release the third book with two options of covers so people can have a choice. It is such a shame as there is multitude of really rubbish books that are just porn with no real story out there with really similar covers. And I fear the author is going to get lost in the crowd, which is a shame as she can write a really good story with great world building and fantastic characters.
I am left wondering WHY...... Obviously some really poor advice.
I am just thankful I found her books before the change or I wouldn't have picked them up.
Just saw a review on amazon saying the same thing poor guy. I can just imagine him trying to recommend the books to his mates with the new covers. *Snort*
edit 27/08/22 Finished reading really enjoyed the story it is getting more intriguing and interesting with the over arching story running through all the books. I also love Diablo! I maintain my earlier comments this is more a sci/fi series with romance and deserve better book covers. P.s I guess I also prefer the fade to black in the main books with the option for the sexier stuff as an extra. As my kids read the first two books and loved them but can't give them this book sadly.
Vicky Holt brings more danger, humour, and heart-clenching emotion to her cerebral sci-fi series. None of the human scientists who have crashed on the planet Ikthe, aka Predator Planet, aka "Certain Death," were prepared for an environment where everything from giant reptiles, to clawing vegetation, to grabby moss would try to eat them. Each of them have had to quickly learn to fight, and kill, to survive. Perhaps none have been as ill-equipped as exo-biologist, Amity Diaz, whose role on the original mining expedition was to observe and study alien fauna. Every new species excites and delights her, if only they would stop trying to kill her for long enough to take notes and make sketches!
With heavy heart, Amity soon accepts that it's her or them, and she is not ready to give up hope of reuniting with her friends, geologist Esra Weaver and mechanical engineer Pattee Crow Flies. Little does she know that an apex predator is also hunting her. Natheka, one of the Theraxl hunters who have banded together with Amity's colleagues, is on a mission to recover Amity. Massive, agile, and fearless Natheka is a great friend to have at Amity's side in a deadly trek through the ikfal (Ikthe's dense forests) but he wants more. He wants to win Amity's regard as his heart mate. His heart home already calls to her ...
Vicky Holt's world building is amazing. A depth of research is evident in bringing the alien geography, flora, and fauna to life. Amity's struggle to survive is both harrowing and highly intelligent. I really enjoyed the gender dynamic that is inherent in the lifestyle of the Theraxl race. The hunters feel compelled to protect their heart mates, to lay down their lives for them, and yet they expect and celebrate the strength of the "soft travellers." The opinions and contributions of the humans are regarded with respect and gratitude. As the renegade Theraxl/human team grows and coalesces, issues of trust and intent are explored, and the time to confront the corrupt Theraxl First Queen, Ikma Scabmal Kama, draws close. There is an underlying thread of spirituality that seems link the auspicious arrival of the humans with a geological upheaval that coincidentally is remaking the surface of Ikthe. So much is happening!
I was delighted to meet Diablo. Diablo is a fabulous addition to the cast of characters. He is fascinating, heroic, adorable, and fantastic change of pace on a planet known for its ferocity. I want more of Diablo in Book 4. I also can hardly wait to see who is the fourth human who has crashed into Agothe-Fatheza, the most lethal region on the planet! This series feeds my love of science and adventure perfectly!
*SPOILERISH?* * * * NB: As Books 1 and 2 have been "no steam" romance in regards to the pairings of Esra and Naraxthel, and Pattee and Hivelt, readers may need to be aware that the sexual intimacy between Amity and Natheka is briefly and tastefully mentioned at about the 85% mark. It is not explicit.
NOTE: not a standalone, go read the other two books that precede this one first. It’s worth it! Amity and Natheka
Amity’s arrival on the predator planet wasn’t an easy one. After her pod crash landed, she was injured and her ability to communicate with the other humans was severed with the damage to her helmet and suit. Befriending a Devil Dog wasn’t in the plans, but he soon proves to be a benefit to her… and then the hunter sent by her friends arrives. Natheka knows Amity is his heart mate, but the Xeno-biologist is suspicious of his motives. With all the upheaval to Ithke, and the political machinations of the queen, the humans and hunters have to work together…
This book begins right as Pattee is helping VELMA land Amity’s pod (which happens towards the end of book two). Amity is nothing like her friend and coworker though, her soft heart makes it hard for her to deal with all the killing that the predator planet demands. She’s more the sort to help and heal than kill, and as a Xeno-biologist it’s always been her job to study life. Her skills aren’t useless though, and she manages to surprise even the hunters! Natheka managed a legendary kill his first time on the planet, which cemented his hunter reputation, and also his trust in Naraxthel, Esra’s heart mate (book one), who didn’t take advantage of the situation. Natheka is another honourable warrior, who trusts that the goddesses are leading him on the right path. His experience with them occurred years before, so the time we tend to see them in this book is all Amity’s experience.
The book addresses a few big issues, setting everything up for what is to come. There is a soft cliffhanger, about a 3/5 on the trauma scale, in which we see the main character for the next book face a big obstacle that’s going to be a problem later! It’s mostly book-hook for the (as yet, January 2023) unpublished fourth book in the series.
Bottom line, this is just as good as the previous books in the series. There is a lot of heart pounding action, many monstrous enemies (and one monstrous friend), and a lot of almost dying. It’s heavy on the sci-fi, with just a couple of romantic moments towards the end of the book, but then I found this a recipe for an excellent read. This one is highly recommended for those who love their SFR heavy on the sci-fi, and loved the other books in this series.
Amity, Pattee's BFF, survived the chaos aboard ship and ended up planet-side with the other survivors. Well, she actually ended up crash-landing and in a bit of a bad way before she managed to rejoin the other human women. The point is she's on-planet and ready to face off against anything that wants to end her.
HA. Okay, no. The facing off against the horrors this nightmare planet likes to throw at unsuspecting humans comes later. First she's just trying to deal with her injuries while avoiding any of the terrors the planet keeps throwing in her direction. So she makes a few friends, seriously wonders if the other humans are okay since her AI is telling her they're hooking up with alien men, and worries about dying of the airborne cooties that don't play nice with human biology.
The alien who feels all sorts of things for Amity? Natheka. The big guy is sweet and smitten and determined to not spill his feelings all over Amity until she gets used to the idea of a heart mate. Spoiler: He let's it slip pretty early on and Amity has plenty of time to let the idea percolate.
Meanwhile, dangerous political maneuverings are afoot, the goddesses are making themself known when they need to, a flatulent doggo considers Amity his person, Natheka is determined to win his heart mate's, uhh, heart, and the human group is growing a little bigger. Three human ladies down, two to go!
Amity woke after her crash landing. Her Velma also had the benefit of Esra's and Pattee's language and wildlife downloads. All which seemed very lucky for her. But it also seems as if pairing up with these alien hunters is expected, too. And that part she's not so sure about. Because she's pretty sure she's a free will sort of woman.
Spoilers ahead. I'm in love with Diablo's addition. He's still a wild animal. No one is trying to domesticate him. And it runs parallel to Amity's. Nat doesn't try to woo her. No heavy handed passes. He accepts being her friend with no expectations of anything more. He doesn't want a shadow, he wants a partner. And while Amity might not be the warrior Pattee is, or Esra has become, she adds strategic insight and is bedazzled by Ikthe's flora and fauna. I so love that the focus of the story is humans learning about this new planet, a new culture, the political intrigue, and survival during this planet upheaval. The romance is sprinkles on the sundae instead of the heavy syrup that overpowers every other flavor. I frequently reread this series knowing that only 2 more books remain but hoping a 3rd sneaks in. Like a book-long epilogue following them all after the dust settles lol.
This book picks right back up where we left off with Book 2. The plot and politics continue to become more convoluted? I kind of sort of get how everything is coming together, but I'm still having a little trouble conceptualizing it. It's a little weird and confusing at times, the science, the biology, the culture, all of it. With that being said, it's (the series) really a non-stop scifi survival/adventure story with just a smidge of romance thrown in. I like that. A lot. But this also felt a little slower than the previous two books, probably because it's no longer a new concept, just more of what is experienced in books 1 and 2. It took me longer to finish, and I wasn't quite as invested as I could have been. However, I am definitely committed to reading ALL of their stories, but now I'm probably most intrigued by the idea of Book 5, our other Rax, Raxtheznana, the non-believer because of reasons revealed towards the end of this book. Talk about a hook.
Anyway. This really is a pretty unique series and would recommend to those looking for something a little bit outside the normal for "scifi romance".
Audiobook: I enjoyed book three of the "Predator Planet Series" as much as the first two books. Amity was amazed by the different life forms found on the planet that her ship crashed on. Her admiration made it hard for Amity to kill anything even though most life forms on the planet were trying to kill her. Natheka was a great warrior who needed to keep Amity safe. I liked Amity's and Natheka's love story as these two characters were so different, but each could value the other's strengths. I appreciated that love played a role in their character arcs. There were some roller coaster moments that kept me waiting with bated breath to find out what would happen. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Paul Metcalfe's narration was entertaining. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
This is the third of the series and I'm already impatiently waiting for number four. I always categorize these books as more sci-fi with a romance built into it. The world building ,as always is amazing. I love that we revisit characters from the first two books and get points of view from some of the other characters, not just the main couple. I got quite the chuckle from a few of the scenes with Diablo. Definitely will read the others when they come out.
Another human has been found on the predator planet. Amity is sweet and full of compassion totally opposite of her heart-mate. And anyway, who says she wants to hookup with an alien? I loved the danger and excitement this couple went through. The plot thickens as to what’s going on with the twin planets and the alien Elder Sister. I am really looking forward to the next book.
WhT a great series, the author has built a planet and characters and story that will grab you from first chapter and won’t let go. Lots of twists and turns, kept you guessing. The books flows better if you start from book one. Each book is about a different couple and is a continuation but you quickly pick up what is going on. There is action, adventure, big 🦖 dinosaurs and creepy creatures. Though of romance and power hungry evil queen.
Amity is my favorite female lead so far. She appreciates Velma's scat fascination and mostly enjoys the flora and fauna of the Predator Planet. There is a small amount of graphic sex, but the adventure is the important part of the book, which is how I like my SFR. The worldbuilding is good, and Diablo is a great addition to the group.
Another astounding book written by Vicky! She is in my top favorite authors! The world building in this series is top notch and you can tell that research was done to help with it. The relationship between the mc's is heart stopping! Once again though, I wish there was spice. I'm desperately hoping there will be a separate book with just spicy scenes from each book all in one!
This one tied up a lot of loose ends, while being fine as a stand-alone book. I loved the way she switched to different characters, to allow their point of view. Can't wait for the next two!
Another great addition to the series. I’m really looking forward to the next couple and what happens next. The whole story is very well connected and the characters fit so well.
I jumped into #3 in the series and I think that was a mistake. There is a lot of world-building that went on in the first 2 books that I missed and the story was difficult to follow. The characters were well-written, although their motivations were sometimes questionable.
With each page we move farther into Predator Planet and each experience brings edge of your seat action and suspense. My favorite creature in this book was Diablo.
