D-Genesis Light Novel #3

D-Genesis: Three Years after the Dungeons Appeared Volume 3

Rate this book
The dust has settled around the Otherworldly Language Translation auction. Yet not long afterwards, Naruse shocked D-Powers with her translations. To confirm the existence of mineral drops, Keigo and Miyoshi must delve to an even deeper level of Yoyogi Dungeon. However, the enemy lying in wait might finally put Keigo’s stats and skills to the test.

Meanwhile, the publication date for Heaven’s Leaks is drawing closer. While D-Powers counts down the days, they must also confront problems regarding their stat-measuring device. How will the world react to telepathy and the quantification of human abilities? Could these two revelations somehow collide?

Finally, an old friend visits, but she brings news about Altum Foraminis. The healing cult has begun closing in on D-Powers. Regardless, the world’s top explorer, his genius sidekick, and their loyal hellhounds won’t be foiled so easily. Not until they’ve uncovered the secrets of the dungeons and sampled all the best food in Tokyo, at least.

Actual score is 2.5

Most of the dungeon diving and geopolitics seen in previous books were replaced entrepreneurial ideas and excessive amounts of pointless banter. The one dungeon dive attempt done in the book was exciting but wasn't enough to save the book from the endless amount of banter that filled at least half the book.

If anyone has a taste for a slice of life experience in a fantasy dungeon setting, where the character dialogue goes off on a tangent moreso than an unguided podcast episode, this is the book for you...

Deviated from dungeon diving

It was hard for me to het even half way through this book. I like the fist 2 due to action and loot. This...is all conversations and boring hypothesis. I just couldn't read more. Hoping to see action past the fist half of the book didn't yield any results. If 4th book is like this it will be a hard pass.

Well, The diving start for real. Many new characters here, and we could guess, the other main supporting characters are all women. Until now there are no things that could stop the advancement of the main character. The story begun to divert from research and more to the secret of the System.

I absolutely LOVE this series! The two main characters are just terribly likable—they really remind me of typical engineers—and I love the new things they uncover about the dungeons. I guess I just really like the series because of my geeky researcher side.

Having dealt with the skill orb of Otherworldly Language Translation and the trouble that came with it, it is time to prepare for the release of the content to the public. Of course, besides investigating and testing parts of the dungeon texts, which include some dungeon delving, most time is spend on their more generic research into stat measurement, making a profit and simply enjoying life with their new friends. The world itself does not still either, especially since some of the newly dungeon abilities have a rather big impact on even fairly simple aspects of life.

Much like previous volumes the focus of the book lies on conversation and investigation with only a little bit of time spend on action and dungeon delving. Since I enjoy most of the back-and-forth between the characters and the detailed attention to research I really like the series. The lack of action is more of a pro than con to me since I get bored rather quickly with fights.

I am less of a fan of the dense protagonist trope, and the sense of a harem that I am getting. Nothing romantic happens, it is just alluded to that several of the women have feelings towards the protagonist and there are surprisingly few men (none) actively involved with the protagonist's life. The plot is a slow burn, and at times things drag on a bit too much, but not to the point I really mind even though I would like a bit more progress and a bit less attention to the ability of people to cheat on their exams with the party system. Don't get me wrong, I like that the author takes these details into account when world building, but I don't think it requires as much pages as it gets, your mileage might vary.

All in all, a good read and I am really curious if we ever get to learn who created the dungeons and why.
